Thanks for another entertaining and exciting Dolores Gray video from Ed’s show, back when a family could afford to attend a Broadway show. Have a great day!
Absolutely fantastic performance, we see Dolores do a range of themes in this single clip. We also see she delivers the goods with no auto-tune, no pitch correction, no pryotechnics or special effects. Oh, and I love the dress she wore. Dolores sure does know how to wear beautiful dresses.
Okay, so Dolores Gray sings incredibly: smooth as shiny glass and powerful as hurricane, and she moves beautifully: crisp, abandoned, and effortless. However, before seeing this clip, I never realized how masterfully she handled props! I think this number was done in one take and she doesn't drop a hat, a boa, pigtails, or a handbag. What a pro! I wonder what Cole Porter thought about the specialty lyrics that replaced ANOTHER OPENING, ANOTHER SHOW. He must have been very happy to hear Dolores singing C'EST MAGNIFIQUE - that's if he was up to watching the Sullivan Show on a Sunday night.
Thank you for highlighting that element of Dolores Gray's talent! Her remarkable dexterity makes even the tiniest bits of 'stage business' a treat to watch. Actor Gregory Peck complimented this skill of hers in one of those station break promos he made for TCM to promo screenings of the 1957 film "Designing Woman." Telling Gray over lunch that he's married Lauren Bacall after a whirlwind romance, his jilted girlfriend (Gray) seems to accept the news gracefully. Out of nowhere, Gray calmly takes her fingertips and gracefully flips a plate piled high with spaghetti into Peck's lap. Expressionless, she gets up and exits. In his voiceover, Peck notes that there was only one suit, so if there had been a mistake they'd have lost a day of shooting while the suit was laundered. Dolores nailed it as if she used radar. One take. In the 1955 film "It's Always Fair Weather," during the intro to her character's TV show, 'Midnight With Madeline'. After playing the piano and singing the sponsor's 'jingle,' she gets up, grabs a basket filled with six or seven boxes of 'Klenz-Rite' detergent, flings them at the audience as if from a slingshot! Then with a compacted and swift zig zag motion she tosses this large wicker basket off camera! It never fails to make me laugh. There's a reason why the great drag performers like Lipsyncha and RuPaul studied her every move. Dolores Gray was a symphony of movement.
Every moment a legendary powerhouse. Does anyone know who staged this? So smoothly arranged, staged, shot and conceived for live television. Thanks for sharing.
That's entertainment folks! Nice production.

Just discovered her...
Phenomenal voice, joy of singing, poise, presentation, not overdone....a lot of talent.
She was a remarkable talent. What a blessing to have Ed's show on the air to frame her art. I just loved her. DA
