Loved seeing a photo of Ms. Kathy in this video. My kiddos love her and Mr. Rick and know them by name. They often pretend to be train robbers and the train is a must do every visit sometimes more than once. Completely agree that if you haven't ridden the train you haven't been to SDC 🚂 Thank you!!
Sounds so familiar... On the Strathspey Railway in Aviemore, we start at 8:30, check the train before it gets shunted out the shed, fill the toilet tanks at the station, perform a brake test once the engine arrives... Difference for us is that we focus on safety instead of passenger interaction :-) Main interaction is when we do the "Broomhill spiel" - Broomhill is the end of the line, the run-round loop is beyond the station. so we tell the folks to not try and get off, "Because someone stole the mattresses, and it's a lot of paperwork". If you're ever in Scotland, you should come on :-)
I was in Aviemore a very long time ago. First time I ever skied, also the last time I ever skied! Aviemore is very beautiful, I hope I get the chance to go back one day!
Trek there's a story about a skier in Aviemore - about 4 years ago, we had a rather large snowfall in March. enough to cover the boundary fences on the line. our DMU still ran though. We came round the corner, and here was a skier making his way down the line, oblivious to the fact that it was a railway, since the rails and fences were buried 😂
+Dena Ruonavaara I forgot that one! And I should know it. Our very first home as a married couple was in Felton 1/2 mile from Roaring Camp. We used to walk to it.
This was really cool to see since I've been riding the SDC train since is was a baby. I Rembrandt the old train shop. I've always thought the picture was kind of dumb.
Being a conductor myself on a tourist train I know some of the things that you deal with, I love the job that I do and I'm glad you can share your experiences with everybody! I know how you feel having to turn people down because it would be our last trip of the night or the caboose was full.
Here are some things about SDC’s locomotives.76 is 1940 Skoda504 is one of the new locomotives and SDC just got it fixed up and running. It is 1941 Skoda from Czech RepublicOld 43 still operates at the park. It is 1934 Orenstein & Koppel (Germany) 13 and 14 are 1938 Orenstein & Koppel. 13 has a long history with the park, while 14 is still getting some work done. The overhaul for that locomotive is still going on. The boiler arrived from Strasburg Pennsylvania in February. SDC is still waiting on the rest of the parts.
Mostly right on. Actually 76 and 504 are Kolben-Danek engines and are sisters (same model of engine). 43, 13, and 14 (which may get renumbered) are also all sister engines. 14 is going to be at least another year before it begins to be pieced together again.
+Fishing Harry I thought the train and Rhino Rally were very thrilling. LoL I did work one coaster- a mouse at Busch Gardens, but only did it a couple of times. I could have at SDC but they ended up using a couple other guys instead. And since I was typically working full time on the train anyways any other shifts would have been all overtime, something that neither the park or I really wanted.
+britshell Nothing fancy. Just a couple card tricks and a light chaser. Ot much more than that. Usually wasnt time for anything that took more than a minute.
Nice hair cut! Love your stories, Sir Willow. I really really don't like that "forced photography" - if you're visiting with a character or you're out enjoying the park and the Photopass guy comes around, yes, sure go ahead. But if you tell me I have to have my photo taken before I get on the ride, trust me, I'm not buying the picture.
I'm totally with you on that. It's one of the reasons that Photopass was so much more successful than what Kodak used to do at Disney, and what their derivatives still do at theme parks.
That was pretty much really the only bad employee I had to deal with there, and there's a lot I can't tell about that photographer and what happened because of dealings with HR. :-)
keep up the good work I was at SDC on the 4th of July and rode the train of course I always ride it every time I go to the park and ya it could be better for the pictures they seem kinda high priced in my opinion
As always, it's so much fun to hear your stories. I've never been to Branson, but someday I'd love to get to Silver Dollar City and ride that train. There don't seem to be many trains that get robbed anymore. I do remember some from when I was a kid, but they are just train rides now. I hope Silver Dollar City keeps theirs at least long enough for me to see it.
There's only a couple I'm aware of that I think still do "robberies" on their trains. Knott's Berry Farm and Silverwood up in Idaho are the ones I've heard. Dollywood used to, but doesn't anymore. I'm not sure of any others offhand.
+SirWillow well if you count outside of theme parks The Grand Canyon railway up in Williams Arizona does a "robbery" on the way back with an exception for the polar express trains they run
Have you ever worked at the parks during Halloween? (Mickeys’s Not So Scary Halloween Party/Howl-O-Scream)? How did that Change your experiences with the guests? Love the videos!!!
Worked it a couple of times. I talk about it some in one of my videos th-cam.com/video/X9OZXZrwbFE/w-d-xo.html It didn't change anything about my experiences with the guests (not sure what it would have changed) but I had a blast working at it.
I enjoyed your video. I'm sure it was great fun. Trains have always been my passion. My granddad was an engineer on the L&N who retired with 51 years of service. Although I never worked for the railroad, I spent eight years of summer weekends operating a 15" gauge Crown locomotive on the Little Toot Railroad in Flora, IL. It was the little brother to the 36" Crowns that run at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Kings Island, and Six Flags in St. Louis. Ours was a coal burner, so it was challenging to run. Only had room for one on the engine, so I had to be both engineer and fireman, plus being the conductor. We never had enough help to have a riding conductor, so I spent a lot of each trip twisted around to keep an eye on the passengers. Those days were probably the most fun I ever had with my clothes on! The only part I didn't care for was getting the engine ready in the morning, cleaning out the ashes from the previous days fire, and using a 12 ga. shotgun brush to scrub the soot from the flues in the boiler. I hated being filthy already before I ever saw my first passenger. At least it was authentic grime.
A shotgun to clean the soot? LOL We actually talked about doing that at SDC, but I was wondering if the engineers were pulling my leg. I guess not. Was it a powder charge or scatter shot? I learned a lot about trains working there compared to what I knew when I started, but it was still miniscule compared to what the engineers knew. There were a bunch of train nerds who loved working there because of their passion for trains. Made it a lot of fun for all of us.
SirWillow Oops, I guess I wasn't clear in my description. We didn't use an actual shotgun, just the brass-bristled brushes used to clean the bore of a 12 ga. It was mounted on a long, slightly flexible rod, inserted into each the 22 flue tubes in turn through the opened smoke box and given three or four strokes before moving on to the next flue. The old fire was dumped by reaching through the firebox door almost to your shoulder and lifting out each section of the fire grate. I worked summer of '65 at Fair Park in Nashville, running their Herschel Mad Mouse. I also worked part-time the summer of '67 and '68 at Joyland park in Wichita as a relief operator, running every ride in the park. My favorites were their C.P.Huntington train (the first ever built) and the Ferris wheel, which takes more skill than you might think to run properly.
+Trevlyn4Real7 probably not. I'm no longer an employee, and back stage things like that aren't generally allowed with special permissions. I can ask but I'm not optimistic that they will go for it.
Honestly you should do a draw my life because it would amazing!!!!!! You should really do one. Your life looks awesome. I've never been to SDC or some other ones but I would really want to go to them!!!!!!!!
hard to find anyone to do a collaboration anywhere near where I live. :-) I'd love to do some, but there aren't many TH-camrs in the SW Missouri area. Especially not ones that would work well with me or my content. :-/
My family will be in Branson in a couple of weeks. Do you or anyone else here have suggestions about must-see shows in the area? (Don't worry we are doing SDC and the shows in the park). Also, thoughts on the museums are welcome as well, my father and I have done the Titanic Museum but it has been many years and are willing to do it again with the rest of the family.
+Alyssa Layne How many shows? My favorites are SIX, Moses at Sight and Sound, and the Pressleys. But IT, the Duttons, the acrobats and many others are also very good. There are a lot we haven't seen yet.
Before DollyWood (BDW) there was Silver Dollar City and before that I think it was Rebel Railroad. So, the main attraction has always been the train. They also had train robbers, but I believe they stopped it due to it not being PC. Dumb idea!
Robert Werner the train robbery at Dollywood was stopped in order to get more train rides in so more people could ride the train. It had nothing to do with political correctness
Even then I'm not sure it would justify the extra costs. You would almost have to double staffing- extra conductors, extra engineers, and somehow manage a rotation of robbers. There's no way the robbers could do nonstop shows without a break in between like they get with one train. And there's really not room out there for 4 people to stay in that shack all day. That and as long as the line gets in the summer, with 2 trains it would turn it into a walk on with trains only about 2/3rds full. Still no where near as busy as it is at Christmas.
hey sir Willow! I love your videos I've binge watched them all. I was wondering if you've ever watched undercover boss? you should definitely check it season 1 episode 6. silver dollar was featured!
I remember when they started the picture thing. Me and my family got so irritated. We tried to stand by the far right gate and we got told that we had to move so we did not get where we wanted to ride. We thought it was so stupid. I understand why they want to do it but they didn't think it through. I miss the gift shop there.
We would see them when we visited the park. I've actually got a short video of them shot on my very old, low definition camera that I might post at some point (the quality is really bad though) but I can't say I have any stories about them. +Mitchell Henry they put about 125 guests into the front car every ride. :-) The only thing in front of that is the engine itself and there's only one seat in it. But if you are in the front couple of rows in the first car you can see into it easily. There is no tinder, which may be what you are thinking of (the "coal car")
What happens to the unbought pictures that they preprint and get you to buy after the ride? Just throw them away? Why not just have them digitally and bought at hospitality house like the other photos? Just curious! :)
Surprising that Silver Dollar City didn't draw on your previous photography experience when running a photo op at the train station. Did you try to put your two cents worth in?
+Richard Meredith It was a contracted company working through them. My lead also had experience with them before as well. And their manager wouldn't listen to anybody else. Just one of those guys who thought he knew more than he really did and didn't want to listen anybody who might know anything different. Oh well
Absolutely. Once robber, always a robber. I've actually run into guys that robbed further back than me and we were able to just start spitting out the whole robbery show. :-)
+Sean Smithy completely real 20 gauge shotgun. Slightly modified but otherwise fully functional. However it is left unloaded until immediately before its fired at the end of the robbery show.
Wait a minute You mentioned that there were German Trains From The 1940s, so the Engines are from Nazi germany (Since you said 1940s) Weird... I don't judge you though Its not the train's fault.

As always- great work!
love the bloopers at the end keep up the good work
12:19 He used to wrong form of to!!! It's too in that tense!!!

Roaring Camp Railroad in Felton, CA has a "train robbery" when you ride their train. It's quite fun! And the redwoods are gorgeous.
+Dena Ruonavaara I forgot that one! And I should know it. Our very first home as a married couple was in Felton 1/2 mile from Roaring Camp. We used to walk to it.
2:53 that's Noah Bentley sitting in the one of the cars. he still runs the trains today.
got to love trains thanks again just catching up
great video
This was really cool to see since I've been riding the SDC train since is was a baby. I Rembrandt the old train shop. I've always thought the picture was kind of dumb.
You are so genuine, that you you don’t need the bloopers. Others and I love who you are. I want the best for you. Please keep going. You are awesome.
I'm going there in a couple days and hope to see u
I will be out there visiting the park tomorrow (Tuesday) with my family. If you're there, don't hesitate to say Hi!
Sir Willow, Nice haircut.
You have a cool job being a conductor For The Frisco silver dollar train is so cool
I did. I still miss it a lot. It's been 3 years now...
So the train has to stop so that's why they added the train robberies sequence
Like the bloopers 🤣🤣
Being a conductor myself on a tourist train I know some of the things that you deal with, I love the job that I do and I'm glad you can share your experiences with everybody! I know how you feel having to turn people down because it would be our last trip of the night or the caboose was full.
i love this guy
love your videos now I know why the robbers "forgot" some lines.

One of the engineers told me that Kolben Danek is also called Skoda works. I guess they still make cars to this day. Also 13 is larger than 43.
Have you ever worked on a thrill ride/rollercoaster. Thank you for making these videos they are so cool.
+Fishing Harry I thought the train and Rhino Rally were very thrilling. LoL I did work one coaster- a mouse at Busch Gardens, but only did it a couple of times. I could have at SDC but they ended up using a couple other guys instead. Magic tricks you say? I like to hear more about that.
+britshell Nothing fancy. Just a couple card tricks and a light chaser. Ot much more than that. Usually wasnt time for anything that took more than a minute.
The train is the best ride at any park! Especially if it's real steam.
Rest in peace: Ma Bolin
Gone but only forgotten when it's a 20 minute schedule day.
Sadly, I believe Ma has been completely removed from the show now. Which is really sad.
Always go to a theme park on weekdays
Love these videos so much!!!!!
absolutely love these videos
I really like the bloopers at the end. I got one question. What was your favorite role out of all the theme parks you worked.
+Adam White Honestly cant say i had a favorite. Loved them all and would have a very hard time choosing.

You need to do a "bad employees at Silver Dollar City" video, and you could talk about that painful photographer.
That was pretty much really the only bad employee I had to deal with there, and there's a lot I can't tell about that photographer and what happened because of dealings with HR. :-)
i love your videos it really helps my work day go by...really informative THANKS!
I've been binging watching The Confessions of a Theme park worker for 3 days now. Very entertaining to watch! Thank you, Sir Willow!!

oh okay thanks though
Honestly you should do a draw my life because it would amazing!!!!!! You should really do one. Your life looks awesome. I've never been to SDC or some other ones but I would really want to go to them!!!!!!!!
+Abigail Horta Except I can't draw so It would be really horrible
SirWillow I'm sure it doesn't matter lol.
SirWillow Find some one who can that is willing to do a collaboration.

Robert Werner the train robbery at Dollywood was stopped in order to get more train rides in so more people could ride the train. It had nothing to do with political correctness
Have you worked on the Disney Train?
No. I was only a photographer at Disney. Check out the FAQ on my Facebook page for that and many other questions.
Cool I'm early... I've been wanting something explaining these train workers.
They haven't done ma in 2 years I haven't heard it at least
It be cool if they ran 2 trains in the summertime for busy weekends.

They ran two of the trains.
hey sir Willow! I love your videos I've binge watched them all. I was wondering if you've ever watched undercover boss? you should definitely check it season 1 episode 6. silver dollar was featured!
yep, very familiar with that episode when then-CEO Joel Manby was on. he's now in charge of Sea World parks and no longer with Herchend. :-)
In your opinion, out of the 3 amusement parks in Missouri ( Silver Dollar City, Worlds of Fun, and Six Flags St. Louis), which is better?
+TheReal MachuPichu haven't been to WoF yet (in two weeks) but right now I would say SDC. Love the theming.
I remember when they started the picture thing. Me and my family got so irritated. We tried to stand by the far right gate and we got told that we had to move so we did not get where we wanted to ride. We thought it was so stupid. I understand why they want to do it but they didn't think it through. I miss the gift shop there.
Love all of your content keep it u
Did you take any photos with the dapper dans and the ragtime players when you worked in DW? If so, do you have any funny stories involving them?
We would see them when we visited the park. I've actually got a short video of them shot on my very old, low definition camera that I might post at some point (the quality is really bad though) but I can't say I have any stories about them. Didn't take any photos and didn't really ever have an opportunity to talk to them or "hang around" with them.
Is there any way for a guest to ride in the front car of the train?
+Mitchell Henry they put about 125 guests into the front car every ride. :-) The only thing in front of that is the engine itself and there's only one seat in it. But if you are in the front couple of rows in the first car you can see into it easily. There is no tinder, which may be what you are thinking of (the "coal car")
SirWillow thanks I'm a person who likes trains and was just curious
Was about going to sleep but never mind
What happens to the unbought pictures that they preprint and get you to buy after the ride? Just throw them away? Why not just have them digitally and bought at hospitality house like the other photos? Just curious! :)
+WatkinsFamily I believe they shred them. I agree its one area they could improve on and save a lot if waste. But it's Digiphoto and... :-)
Oh well
Gee haven't we all worked with managers like that... If he wanted your opinion he'd give it to you...
Keep it up sorry just a big fan
Do you still know your lines?
Absolutely. Once robber, always a robber. I've actually run into guys that robbed further back than me and we were able to just start spitting out the whole robbery show. :-)
Is the shotgun that the conductor has decommissioned or is it live? I’d hope it’s decommissioned.
+Sean Smithy completely real 20 gauge shotgun. Slightly modified but otherwise fully functional. However it is left unloaded until immediately before its fired at the end of the robbery show.
Why fix a train design that wasn't broken? Aaaarrrrrgg bad design is my pet peeve.
