You awaken in the dark, your skin cold, your mind blank. You have nothing but your fear, a flickering candle, and a question: How long will your light last?
Trapped and crawling your way through a pitch-black labyrinth, equipped with nothing but dim candles, you must work together to explore the maze and escape. Unfortunately, your weak candlelight illuminates only your immediate surroundings. Worse still, horrifying Wax Eaters - monsters who despise the light - lurk in the suffocating darkness for their opportunity to strike.
The Night Cage is a fully co-operative, horror-themed tile-placement game that traps 1-5 lost souls within an unnatural labyrinth of eternal darkness. To win, players must each collect a key, find a gate, and escape as a group.
Escape won't be easy as each player's visibility is limited by the weak light of their candle. They illuminate only tiles directly connected to their own, and when players move, tiles that fall into darkness are removed from the game. Doubling back the way you came only opens new paths, the old ones being lost forever with critical keys and gates vanishing if your light move away from them...

I had a double date and we were playing this game for the very first time. The end example was how we actually finished the game lol
You are very articulate, you speak at a good pace and explain very well (and are not afraid to repeat and sum up what you have said before). Also, you know how to set up a good atmosphere to help the viewers sink in the game thematics. For me, those are the qualities of a good board game teacher. Keep up the good work!
At 17:42 there is a small mistake. You remove a tile that is still illuminated via the red player on the opposite side of the board.
This should be a short movie, or episode of a TV show like Twilight Zone. Prisoners trying to escape through some dark unknown tunnels with just candles, only to find out there is something else in those tunnels, some unknown ancient horror, and slowly one by one, their candles go out, and they are eaten by the darkness. The prison has never had an inmate escape. They have disappeared, but never escaped.

Important rules note: the start tiles are cracked tiles, so they should collapse immediately after the prisoners step off of them (13:55). Really great work here overall though, Jesse! Your video was the tipping point for me when I backed Pax Pamir, and I hope this does the same for a few people with The Night Cage.

At 18:09 you removed a tile that should have stayed for the orange candle player. I dig the style of this game so much.

Hey now! I addressed that one :) I thought I would change lights and mention it - instead of leaving people with the feeling that I was slightly different.
Word of advice: if you play the solo game, use some kind of token to mark which candle's turn you're taking.

Maaaan, this is such a cool idea! I liked the abstract puzzle nature of the game, but the theme on top of it just made it so much cooler and more insteresting. You painted a fine picture while explaining it too!
One thing I kinda wish would be slightly different is the presentation; meaning the board and tiles could have a more interesting appearance and not just be all black and white. I know it's made to follow the theme, and it works that way, but I imagine someone that's not into games or who stumbled upon this game looking at it and the way it looks is not flashy enough, or interesting enough when you see it on the table. Perhaps they can have a cool box art or something like that. I don't know how you felt about that.
But the puzzle, the theme, and being coop made me interested for sure.

By coincidence this game's theme is all about light and darkness but I have to say you guys have an amazing and really atmospheric lighting in all your videos! I suspect someone on your team have studied photography? Many well known youtubers with millions of subs and a huge budget and they don't have such a nice lighting, well done!

What if we go into the attack zone of a monster?can that action will trigger monster?
If you're attacked by a wax eater, and you go to discard your 3 tiles, if you draw a waxeater do you play it to an adjacent space or do you discard it?
Curious to see that one played to understand it better how it plays out. :P

So, I know I'm late for this, but I'm trying to learn how to play this game and there is one thing I do not understand. What happens if you should happen to just draw one of the wax eaters during your regular movement turn? Do you just "run into it" as if you fell onto it, or do you default to staying in place with all the triggers that might entail? Or can you choose either? From the comments I also gathered that once you step onto a crumbling tile, it will inevitably turn into a pit upon the next turn, whether you move, or not. Is my assumption correct?

I'm watching this to see if I can bring this to a friends house that isn't really accustomed to board games. I think we'll be ok. Irl, not in the game. I think we're doomed to cry in the dark.

This game theme looks really nice, however I always have the same problem with symetric cooperative games : I'm scared of Quarterbacking.
That at some point only one person actually makes all the decisions..

Thanks for doing this video. I though on brief passing this game looked neat, but I had no real idea how to play. Thought the game was too expensive and would check it out in retail but, now I know I probably don’t actually want to play it. Constantly removing the tiles seems more fidily than expected.
I am glad I was able to show it off :) however, I would encourage you to try it out if you are able. The board upkeep is pretty interesting and not fiddly in my experience.
