When I first started as a housekeeper ( without a butler) I noticed the silver needed cleaning quite badly, the previous housekeeper only cleaned what was regularly used. My bosses were away for three weeks so I set about cleaning the items that hadn't been touched in years. They were black!! I washed them and used a light scouring cream very gently over them to get the initial black off, then like you used the process of silver dip, rinse, silver 'foam' rinse then a final rinse in warm water with a little rinse aid in it. I left them to dry then polished everything with a soft cloth and returned the items to the silver cupboard making sure no items touched each other. When my bosses returned they had a dinner party the following evening. I laid the table with the silver ware and also the gleaming glasses. My bosses were amazed at how shiny the silver was and how sparkling the glasses were and very pleased. Immediately after they had been used and washed up, they all had the silver cloth treatment before putting away and the glasses had the glass cloth treatment. My motto has always been if it's meant to gleam, keep it clean. Great video, thank you.

@@goskaes5468 thank you for the compliment but I felt I was lucky to be employed by them. They were my last employers ' in service' and after they passed away, nobody else seem to match up to them. I loved working there and was privileged to meet many people others only dream about meeting. Respect worked both ways and to me, it was like having a second family. They treated my children well and my children behaved well too. Those years were fun, hard work sometimes, some very long hours but the most rewarding of my life.

Interesting , as I remember in England , my mother used to put newspaper on the table in the breakfast room , and sit down with the staff and clean the silver with them , also using tooth brushes. There were no dips in those days ! A kind of cream that stank and changed colour.
I remember how staff were very kindly treated as part of the family , and staff even used to give my parents Christmas presents, and right to the end of my parents lives in Hove, staff always sent them Christmas cards and wrote to them. During breaks my mother used to make them tea and prepare them food and listen to their problems , and try and help them. In Ireland where I was born, my father used to drive staff home . You make me remember those things.
It destroyed me to witness my father getting Alsheimers , and my mother cancer, which she fought for 18 years.
It seemed to me to be sad, for such kind generous people to end up in such a sad way . Not much of a reward for people who spent their lives doing their very best for as many people as they could.
I like your dog ! He obviously lives a very contented life .
It is very kind and tactful of you , not to talk badly in any way about the Royals or criticize them.
I am glad Prince Charles has Camila's support as he must be feeling very hurt at the moment , with all this drama happening in California , and I pray that things will work out somehow.
Many people never consider how the Royals have to just swallow their personal problems and get on with their duties. Not easy at all. When you have that kind of pain in your life , the animals notice it , and can be a great comforts.
May I send you my silver to clean ????? I need a butler !
Very best wishes from Breisach am Rhein

I remembered asking about it! Glad to see a video on it! I've been using a silver polishing cloth and didn't know there was silver polish its really good to know, perhaps it was what grandma used to clean sterling silver for the colonial family she was a housekeeper from. Sadly i know little of her time there. Its hard to find silver teaware in this part of the world and the prices online are harrowing! But i've been blessed to get some bargains still with the exception of the kettle which i've yet to find!

Beautiful, elegant tea pieces! I’m not certain Americans, such as myself, understand what silver dip is. I am familiar with silver polish used commonly here. Where might one find a similar product in the states, do you know? Or perhaps someone who follows your vlog may be aware of where the product could be found.

I am interested as to the silver dip brand. I used one on some silver plated spoons and it took the silver off. The spoons belonged to my mother-in-law and were purchased in Italy. Glad I didn’t try it on a more valuable piece.

I had to smile because many Americans would be horrified that you use silver dip because it removes the "patina" and the blackened tarnish in the crevices. They don't like their silver to look new; they want it to look old. For myself, I like my silver to look shiny and bright; it's so cheerful! So I have silver dip and silver foam in my cupboard, like you. ❤ I, too, found that water neutralizes the silver dip. Many of the problems that people have had with the dip is that they leave it on too long, and even let it dry on the silver, which can damage it. Thank you for demonstrating that it's just supposed to be spread on quickly and then rinsed off right away.

As I mentioned in one of the lockdown episodes - beware of salt in connection with silver!! If you have silver salt vessels, or, like I do, cut glass salt shakers with silver tops, take care to empty them out after each use. Salt _will_ corrode the silver, as I learned the hard way (and I only realized what was happening after hearing about it from an interior designer on YT).

    • @TheRoyalButler

I got my beautiful set from a charity shop for 60. USD (plated). Such a great buy. (Ironically, I NEVER make black tea in any metal container, as it corrupts the flavour. I will serve herbal/fruit infusions in the teapot, and coffee in the coffee pot, as those are not affected.). Which brand cleaners do you use/recommend?

May I ask two more questions: 1st. How would you recommend to clean the teapot inside ? I found out that some people use some dishwasher cleaner and fill the teapot with hot water and let it work some time, but I am not sure that this is the best solution.
2nd. When I see pictures from hight tea I very often see the tea spoon being placed on the saucer in front of the cup. In Germany we always put it behind the cup. What is the correct way in Britain ?
I have to excuse my lousy English.
