I learned this knot many years ago in the Army . When setting up a shelter half , I would tie two of these ‘ Alpine butterfly’ knots in the the apex / ridge line , a bowline on one end and a truckers hitch on the opposite end , each end anchored between the two trees . This is the line you would drape your shelter half over , the two butterfly knots could then be used to hang a lantern / flashlight above so you could have suspended lighting inside your tent …. And also hang other items that needed to be reached inside the tent , or used for hanging wet socks etc … also tie them in your guylines for hanging things like chemlights or whatever on the outside to identify your bivouac site in the dark . So many useful things with these knots .

People are asking what this knot is good for. It is a knot that creates a loop in the middle of the rope and you don't need to access the ends. But most important, it holds in all directions (up, down, and to the side), and perhaps most important, it unties very easily.

I usually tie the Alpine butterfly using three concentric wraps around my hand and then bringing the middle loop under, over, and under the last loop. This slight variation by crossing the third loop, over the hand actually makes a big difference. I think the knot dresses up better in the end, and I can better manage the size of the finished loop. Thanks for the little modification.

When I was 12, this is the knot I made to keep the shade rolled up everyday. But I couldn't do it the way the video shows, because the rope was always in tension. I just kept the tension with my left fist, made the knot with my right hand's fingers, and it all took like six or eight seconds. Then I hooked a permanent sling at the rope's end on a hook in the window frame's lower edge.
If I were to repeat that knot today, I'd be in trouble, were it not for your video. Thanks a lot.

    EXAMPLE:
First: Wrap one end of a strong 25 FOOT long rope; as high as you can safely reach, around a tree that is at least 8 inches in diameter. Then tie a BOWLINE knot to secure it there.
Next: Pull the other end of the rope to a second tree, about 12 to 15 feet away. Tie the rope to the tree using a secure adjustable knot, such as CLOVE HITCH, TRUCKERS HITCH, OR OTHER TYPE, Leaving about 6 feet of slack rope between the 2 trees.
Next: At the mid point of the slack space in rope, Tie a BUTTERFLY KNOT.
Next: from the mid point, tie one BUTTERFLY KNOT about 8 inches to the left and another BUTTERFLY KNOT 8 inches to the right of the mid point KNOT.
Next: tie other BUTTERFLY KNOTS in both directions, (toward each tree) about 18" to 24" apart, til you reach the tree, where you tie a BUTTERFLY KNOT near the tree.
Next. You can now tighten the rope, very very tightly stretched, using the ADJUSTABLE KNOT.
Next: You now have a foundation rope that can be used for several things, such as:
TARP SHELTER, that has points for support poles, lights, etc. Find a rock that is bigger than the loop, push some tarp up through the loop, sit the rock above loop and the tie PARACORD around the outside of the trapped rock, so it secures the loop, rock & tarp.
Next: repeat until you have completed a shelter that is one sided or two sided.
Use the same method of making tie points for the tarp at ground level, to form a tent or half shelter.
    TIE LINE for horses.
HANGING STORAGE for packs, bags, etc.
Use your imagination. I learned this kind as a 9 year old kid in a camping club, so I think you can do it.
