WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD, HEATH! My fav TV series of all time. Start from the very first episode (no cheating by staring with the arrival of Barnabus!). You are in for a real spooky treat. I hope you enjoy, and let us know your thoughts are along the way!
Heath, isn't it wonderful knowing there are individuals in this world that do something truly special for another. What a fantastic set that is, I'm really happy for you.
I was one of those teenagers in the ‘60s who made watching DS an after-school ritual. I’m now watching the series on Prime. I appreciate it now even more than I did then. [Eerie music] “My name is Victoria Winters.” Who’d have known that the series would be more popular today than it was then? Too bad some of the cast (like Joel Crothers, David Ford, and Grayson Hall) passed away before they could see the renaissance of interest in the series.
It certainly was more popular back then, with millions watching it everyday. Barnabas was too grouchy for my taste at that time always mad at Willie or Julia so I preferred watching the Monkees.
So that's 5 years of daily episodes? Could you imagine the size of a boxed set if it was a continually produced soap opera like General Hospital? It would literally be 10 of those boxes. 😳. It's a very cool set,.even watching 5 episodes episodes EVERY day, you've got entertainment for a year!
This is so great. I love hearing about things like this, when one person does something so wonderful for another. It doesn't happen often but when it does it gives me hope and joy. And I love that this is like a Christmas morning moment for Heath. Cannot even _begin_ to imagine what it was like to receive that gift without expecting it. Fantastic. About Dark Shadows: I was born in June 1966 so I missed it all during its broadcast on weekday afternoons. I know the series was done quickly on tape, and retakes were few and far between. But I wish I had been able to watch the show in my teens or even twenties, because it's the sort of stuff I enjoy tremendously: serialized melodrama, and also macabre stuff. I get very easily hooked on a soap. I did watch the NBC limited 12 episode series reboot of DS, from early 1991, but I suspect it has to be looked at as a "condensed soup" version of the original material, with a bigger budget. The modern Tim Burton film of DS was cute-- although the angle taken there, making it a comedy, was a strange choice to me. Bottom line, I suppose I really like producer/writer/director Dan Curtis and most of what he did (the Kolchak show is a sentimental fave, and I dig his films like Burnt Offerings and the TV movie of Dracula starring Jack Palance). I really should watch DS on Amazon. Early episodes, aka "The Beginning" (before the vampire appears), are included with Prime; and the regular series, featuring Barnabas Collins starting in show 211, is free with ads on IMDbTV. The two movies, House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows, are available to rent or buy on Prime.
I remember the feeling of receiving my Dark Shadows coffin box set. It truly is the crown jewel of my collection and I’m so excited for you and the journey you are about to embark on. Have fun my friend.
Hamdan is The Man! What an amazing gift! I love that set. I bought it when it came out, even though it was so pricey, and I've never regretted it. I only wish we could've gotten an unboxing video where we could've seen your surprise when you opened it!
I picked this set up in near mint condition. For 100 dollars cash. Someone on marketplace sold it. I didn’t ask any questions and I bought it immediately. Never thought I’d see this. I did check and it is authentic.
Yes there was an original numbered release back in 2011, when the Tim Burton Film came out. It had personally autographed photo from Johnathan Frid. Make sure to check out the specials on the last couple discs. Especially recommended is Dark Shadows Music Videos, which originally came out in the 90's on VHS. It is based on the Robert Colbert Original soundtrack(picture of Barnabas & Quentin in Blue & Purple Motif) album that was re-released early 2000's
I bought this box set 2 years ago and I am slowly making my way through. Thumbs up on the show and all of the special features so far. I am happy for you. Also check out the Christmas special they made with the org. cast this year. It is great but watch a couple of seasons first so you know the people playing the characters first. Enjoy.
There was a limited edition of dark shadows complete series box set, there were 2,500.00 copies made with the autographed card from Jonathan Frid, I have one of those set, they’re very hard to fine and it can cost big bucks, awesome video my friend
Holy mackerel! Good things happen to good people. Looking forward to your impressions of the show when you start to dive in. Tim Lucas really enjoyed the set and said that it was a revelation watching the whole series. (Lucas also made it through the entire Gunsmoke set.)
I have this!! I was one of the lucky ones that had preordered it originally and got that box set with Johnathan Frid's autograph. Just before he died. Hang tight...it takes a few (hundred) episodes before you get to Barnabas and the plot that most people know....but you have to start with episode 1. No cheating!!!
Came across your channel, because tonight (New Years Eve 2023) I just watched the very last episode of my own "coffin set" of DVD's of the show. I started watching it in August 2020, and like you I didn't believe in "binging" on the show. Limited myself to mainly one episode every night, because I believe that's by far the best way to appreciate Dark Shadows. I'm 68, so I was just a "tweenager" when the show was on the air. I was never a huge fan at the time, but was intrigued by it, and still remembered it all these years later. Which induced me to buy the DVD set. Looking back over the 3+ years of watching Dark Shadows, I just want to say that Dan Curtis created something really grand with this show. The perfect set of actors, writers, and production---a classic "lightning in a bottle"---that still packs quite a wallop. Both with "oldsters" who remember the show (like myself) and now a new generation. Thanks for your channel, and can guarantee you'll be blown-away by the kind gift that was given to you. I'm getting ready to watch the 2 feature films of DS in the next couple of days. PS> I noticed that your boxed set has the "restraining ribbon" at the bottom of the door, that limits how far you can open the lid. I bought my set in 2019, and it doesn't have that. Not sure if it was "forgotten" in manufacture, or if it's something they've added later. It's important to have that "ribbon" keeping the door from opening all the way. Because without it, if you aren't careful it's possible to open the lid too far and damage the hinges.
Sorry to tell you but not having the ribbon for the lid is one of the indicators that it's a fake bootleg set. If you bought it new still in the box another indicator is the original coffin box was in a loose baggy. The fakes were shrink wrapped. I've also read that of the fake ones not all of the disc's will play.
I was an original fan of the show back in the first run, doing the cliche thing of running home from school to watch it. I couldn't afford the Jonathan Frid autographed coffin set, but I decided I must have the generic coffin set and did. Be warned Heath, if get caught up in a storyline you might go through more episodes at one time than you plan, after all the episodes are generally 21 minutes long.
There was a numbered limited edition that included a signed picture card by Johnathan Frid. I bought that limited edition set on an eBay auction that I basically stole with a winning bid of 250 bucks and the seller included other items he collected by going to the Dark Shadows conventions. You mentioned you could tell that yours is authentic by putting a DVD in your computer. There's physical ways to tell also. The original coffin lid has the ribbon that holds the lid up. Fake ones don't have that. On the back the fake ones have 5 bullet points original deluxe sets has 4. The fake one for the 5th bullet point says it comes with the Johnathan Frid signed picture and of course it doesn't. Also the original coffin case out of the shipping box came in a baggy. Fake ones were shrink wrapped. I'm 67 and I was one of the millions of kids who ran home after school to watch Dark Shadows at 4pm. In 1969 I dressed as Barnabas for Halloween. Walking past other kids I could hear them whisper... look it's Barnabas...I was damn near 6 foot tall at 12 years old. Lol so I looked like a grown man in my half caped coat and suit jacket and tie. 1st print was numbered and had the signed photo this(which I have too) is the 2nd print of it. I have not heard any talk of a 3rd push so we still lucky
The only difference between the limited edition and the current set is the original was individually numbered and each contained an "autographed photo" of Jonathan Frid, but the autograph was real!!!!
Congratulations Heath, on the set, welcome to the Dark Shadows, club, LOL. And yes my set is dual layer, and the Limited Collection is the 2,500 count. I'm on the last disc in the first case , I usually try to watch 2 episodes Monday-Friday like the old soap opera days, really enjoy it and to see it in its raw format is awesome . Congratulations again.
That is so awesome. People are really great sometimes. Love this channel, it's such a nice restorative elixir for the ills of the world these days. Cheers to Hamdan! 👏🏻🧛🏼♂️
Congrats and enjoy! This is a favorite show and set. My booklet is signed by five of the cast (because I didn't want to carry and damage the coffin at a con). It's funny I've had this for years (still slowly savoring it) and you didn't considering overall you buy a lot more TV than I do. So much I could say. Suffice it for now to say, be careful with those discs. I broke one getting it out (MPI replaced it for like $8, but that was a few years ago). Also, as you get into it, check out TH-camr Dusty Old Movies. He mainly does classic horror, but about every 10th video is DS, his favorite show.
I did a binge viewing of the entire Law & Order franchise up through the 2019 season a few years ago (of course all on DVD.) Took me a little over a year to get through around 1500 episodes but I also didn't watch anything else that whole time!
@@CerealAtMidnight Ha! Yeah, not sure I could do it again. You mentioned the Dark Shadows counterfeits and there were times I thought my L&O box set might be counterfeit. The picture quality left a lot to be desired but I also know Universal doesn't have the best track record for quality either.
I did similarly with my copy of CBS' all-in-one DVD of the original 1959-63 Untouchables series w/the late, great Robert Stack (didn't see the episodes all at one sitting, but rather spread out throughout the day)-- the reason I did that is because at first, I thought it quite boring and talky, and probably one of the worst I ever had gotten to that point; however, for some reason, it started getting good and action-packed, and I was hooked, and stayed with it until I finished the last episode from 1963 and reached the summit (I have done this with very few shows lately; it has to have that special something to keep me with it for the long haul; Emergency! and The Streets of San Francisco from the 70s have also been like that for me).
Omg I’m so excited! I love this show and I keep looking at purchasing the series, but I agree it’s a lot to spend at one time. I was just looking at reviews yesterday and I couldn’t find a good one so happy to see you got it and to hear your thoughts!
@@CerealAtMidnight it is and for everything you get it really is a great price! I hope you get lots of enjoyment from it and congrats again on 25K! Well deserved 💗💗💗
Incredible gift. Very nice of that person to do that. Let me ask you a question. I know you probably have the basic home insurance that everybody has, but do you have your collection valued and insured separately? I always wonder about this when I see people’s huge collections and you have a beautiful collection. Cool man. Peace.
Very blessed! I believe if you put out kindness and love, that's what you get back, so it makes me so happy to see the generosity and kindness in this audience. Y'all are the best.
I'll hopefully have one up much sooner than that! Rather than one video looking at the whole series, it will be fun to check in from time to time on where I'm at with the show.
One more suggestion. You may wish to skip to episode 210 (disc 25) and make up the earlier shows after you're into it. You'll find that a lot of DS fans (myself included) started this way and recommend it. When it's on streaming, they often just drop those first months. The set even expects you to do it because there's a special feature on that disc (a "the show this far" kind of thing). The show is totally different with the introduction of Barnabas and gets a lot more interesting (it took almost half that many episodes to do anything supernatural). The first 209 episodes are worth the watch when you're a fan, but honestly, if I started there, I'm not sure if I would have made it as far as I did. Just a thought or something to consider if you start with 1, but have a hard time getting into it.
Excellent. That's obviously the ideal and you'll get those "Jane Eyre" vibes it started with. I didn't have that option. I decided to try DS out on the day Jonathan Frid died, but Netflix only started at 210. Now, I'm on disc 12 of the early stuff and I think 87 or so of the Barnabas years. I'd probably be done if I didn't get hard back into pro-wrestling during that time frame. Too much to watch; too little time.
I ordered this a few weeks ago. Was yours properly packaged or was it just kind of loose (no polybag or anything)? To top it off they also put literal tape on top of the coffin itself, ripping some of paper in the process of taking it off. I am pretty sure its a legit set, just kind of annoying considering I paid $400 for this set.
Mine was wrapped incredibly well. No tape, completely covered in multiple layers of bubble wrap, and in a huge cardboard box. I can't imagine this coming form the factory with tape holding it shut. Did yours come from Amazon?
@@CerealAtMidnight Yeah, it came from Amazon. Im like 90% sure its a legit copy because I went through all the checks, except for checking the disc in the computer (dont have a disc drive).

@@nathanmiller2626 Loved it. So spooky. I miss the black and white episodes. And old school Burke!
Does this complete box set start with season 1 episode 1, or skip till Barnabas arrives as episode 1?
Yeah when the second Burke came on the scene we nicknamed him grandpa Burke or referred to him as #notmyburke.@@thebri2000
I know that mine is probably a minority opinion, but I prefer the series in b&w. Color somehow took the edge off it.

The first 209 episodes are worth the watch when you're a fan, but honestly, if I started there, I'm not sure if I would have made it as far as I did. Just a thought or something to consider if you start with 1, but have a hard time getting into it.
Too late! I started at the beginning and am now on disc 4. I'm in for the long haul, and am loving it.
Are there any novelization of the show to help me understand the various show's DVDs I inhereted from my mother?
I love this series, but wish sell set individually blue-ray sets in future.
I am a fan member not originally 1990’s sci fi channel
make sure you have the real one and not the bootleg. Does your coffin have the red ribbon?
Yes, but more importantly, the discs are dual-layer and carry almost 8 GB of data each. Bootleggers never use dual-layer discs.
This is not a show you can binge. One or two episodes a day
For me, two is a binge! Haha. I'll take it nice and slow.
True, but Patrick McCray from The Collinsport Historical Society website, back in 2012 binged all 1225 episodes in 42 days!
@@2006bbbb1 this man has spoken to the gods
McCray literally wrote the book.
I disagree i think its very binge worthy and very addictive especially once Barnabas comes into it.

Pretty much my face when I opened the box expecting cleaning supplies or paper towels.
