  • Solomonster reviews the Dark Side of the Ring episode on "The Double Life of Chris Kanyon", the sad story of a man who loved pro wrestling and was quite good at it, but severe mental health issues, along with his struggles to keep his sexuality a secret, made life hell for him and eventually led to his early demise. He also discusses the Mortis character in WCW that almost made its way to WWE television... the infamous Boy George segment with The Undertaker on Smackdown... the comments John Cena and Ric Flair made about him on The Howard Stern Show... his letter to Stephanie McMahon in 2006 and lots of other details not included in the episode.

@@edalder2000 that's why professional help exists, the fact of the matter is, it's been years since anybody really cared if someone came out as gay, when he was freaking out about this in 2006, it had been 15 years since coming out was a big deal, on top of that, he let John Cena and Ric flair, two overrated wrestlers who couldn't lace his boots up on their best days embarrass him on a national platform, if I were Chris canyon I would have cussed Ric Flair and John Cena out and I would have put a 9 mm to The undertaker's throat and told him if he ever beat me with a chair like that again WWE would be paying tribute to him, he knew how to beat up on James Vandenberg but he didn't know how to beat up on the people who were actually against him and took liberties with him

Depression is not when you feel blue, like when you break up with your girlfriend... Depression is your body's inability to process your negative emotions like sadness and anger and frustration. Take for example when a relative or close friend dies, usually people go through the seven stages of grief before going back to normal. When you're depressed it's actually where you're permanently stuck in stage 2 or stage 3. and you carry this like a weight on you for years.
If you've ever taken x-rays and they make you carry this lead-filled covering, imagine that you're carrying this constantly for years.
I've suffered from depression for 90% of my life and it's literally a weight on your shoulders.
What's horrible in a way is about 20 years ago I found a psychologist who used a method to help expel all of your negative emotions, and it was amazing how light I felt after it was all over. What I hadn't realized is that you need to realize why you became incapable of processing these emotions normally, or else you're right back where you were before...

I grew up a wrestling fan in the 80s and 90s, stopped watching in the mid 2000s and I was a huge undertaker fan. I’m not going to lie I’ve heard some stuff this year about the undertaker that makes me feel kind of let down by him. The way undertaker treated so many WCW guys that came over and the way he treated some of the rookies, I don’t doubt he was trying to actually hurt Chris with that chair shot just like I don’t doubt he and Vince McMahon had a good laugh about how they totally ruined DDP‘s career. I heard an interview with Tracy smothers two days ago and they were asking him about his time in WWF. And he was telling a story of when they had brought him back for the ECW stuff and there was someone that had just signed with the company a new wrestler and he hadn’t been on TV yet. In his dark match he broke his arm. Well they were all in a meeting one day and this guy with the broken arm his cell phone went off in his pocket. Because his arm was in a cast in a sling he was having a hard time reaching across his body with his other arm to turn it off. Supposedly undertaker cussed the guy out in front of everybody and then the next day the guy was fired.

About not being on Howard Stern with issues like these, I also think of Dana Plato from Diff'rent Strokes when she went on the day before she died, she was on the show and callers, some, not all, but most were insulting her and things, she lied a bit too which didn't help but she had all kinds of drug issues, alcohol, substances, attempted suicide, all that. I’ll be honest, my first exposure of Kanyon was quite interesting. I’ll even say I loved his Flatliner finishing maneuver (which is used by various wrestlers even to this day). One of my favorite matches with him was him vs Glacier on an episode of Nitro after Wrath took both of them out. Seeing him succeed in various parts of WCW and even as a double champion during the Invasion angle made me happy for him.
After seeing this episode, I truly felt bad for him and to hear Flair and even Cena told him he wasn’t good (on National TV no less) was disingenuous and not tasteless. Kanyon was truly underrated and deep down a low-key great guy. This is a testament to say that to never judge a book by its cover, especially when one is dealing with internal struggles. RIP Chris Kanyon.

The internet was a thing, but I was a kid and we didn't have dial up until 2006 or so. But back then, video rental stores were a thing, and one tape my parents bought me was WCW Starrcade 1997, where he and Jim Mitchell were sitting in the crowd. Didn't connect the dots in my child mind. Around 17 or 18, with the blessing of TH-cam, and "top moves of" compilations, I realized what an originator Kanyon was. Holy hell, this dude was on a different level. If he would have been able to grasp acceptable levels of promo and charisma, gosh, who knows? Especially in these days. Still, I have experienced occasional remarks that I have found quite hurtful. There are really weird backstage unwritten rules that decide your career, even when you're good at your job and try your best. And being a WCW guy who got hurt at the worst possible time, gets jobbers over and got hurt again while recovering from an injury won't get you far in WWE.

No, Mortis is supposed to be Scorpion due to the skull/Skeleton deal (despite him wearing green).

Ummm...the company that employed David Flair,Tom McGhee and frickin' Terry Taylor is going to have someone call in and tell someone they aren't "entertaining"? Cut me a break!

Or I don't know Jason maybe he just didn't fit in with what the company was looking for at the time... Steve Austin didn't fit in WCW....

This episode was just his friends hyping him up to the point DDP calling mortis a great gimmick lol. Here is a guy that was violent and abusive while according to his friends he used being gay as a cover to blame others and even lied about why he was fired from wwe. At one point they said no one has anything bad to say about Kanyon then telling us how he almost killed his "best friend". We all watched him live and he was an OK low middle card guy but never was going to be more then that. If he wasn't gay Kanyon would of been the bad guy of the episode

Ric Flair is just a snake. That's another reason Bret Hart is better than him. John Cena and Ric Flair are just company men. They weren't saying anything homophobic or antigay, but they're company men.

I liked Kanyon, but I thought he was a mid carder... some of my favorite wrestlers though I always thought would be a mid carder. I was a HUGE CM Punk fan when I first saw him in ECW but also thought he'd be a mid carder.

The episode didn't really make Kanyon a sympathetic figure. He seemed like another in a long line of wrestling assholes with drug issues. Except that they try to use him being gay as a sympathetic thing as if it covers. Then you got DDP and friends overblowing how great he was. Like saying Mortis was the coolest mask gimmicks ever. Dude just came off as a normal wrestling asshole, but they wrapped it up in a isn't it sad he's gay.

What a shallow interpretation. Like they aren't tryin to use him being gay as if it was unrelated to what was happening. Him being gay plus his bipolar disorder plus his cte (which isn't discussed in this dsotr episode but I imagine wasn't helping) all feed into his mood swings and bad behavior. Does it absolve him of sin or something? No. But his actions after getting help for his bipolar and coming out of the closet aren't like violent so maybe that means that its a bit more complex than just another "wrestling asshole with drug issues." Also the only consistent drugs I'm seeing talked about in this episode and else were shit like Antidepressants or Sleeping pills aka things he took when he committed suicide and tried to commit suicide
