    I like the concept of free little libraries in the US. We don’t have such a well structured system here in Germany. But I’m lucky because there’s an old phone booth turned “book booth” in my hometown. I go there quite frequently and have found the most amazing books

    • @Shellyish

      Your comment inspired me to look into Little Free Libraries! They are a worldwide nonprofit organization who set up the community libraries. Each library's success is hinged to the neighborhood. Some communities support their LFL and some do not. Your "Book Booth" sounds like a wonderful little library.

    Little Free Libraries are so wonderful, I set up one (not official, because it was on school grounds) at my school so students would always have books available to them even when the school library was closed and as a way for them to recycle their books as part of our going Green initiatives.
    I think you are really going to love Esperanza Rising and it will resonate deeply with you coming from the Central Valley. It was shocking to find out about Valley Fever and the fact that it has been ongoing all these decades and how pernicious it has been. Outside the southwest I don’t think most Americans are even aware of it as a health issue and how it impacts economically disadvantaged peoples. Pam is amazing author, I especially loved teaching with her Picture Books for Older Readers with her Marian Anderson book and the one on Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart as part of my Brian Selznick illustrator study.
    As per Middle Grade books, I think of them as anything after picture books and Early Readers up to Young Adult, they fall in the “middle” of those two categories. The only thing I might drop out are those early chapter books readers like Mercy Watson, which are a strong category that emerged further within the last decade or so and I think of them as an extended form of Early Readers. I also think of Middle Grade books as having a more literary substance to them, like they could be contenders for a Newbery Medal or Honor, rather then being like series fiction books. I’m very interested in your March Middle Grade reads.

      @ryan61384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if your LFL is on school grounds you can still register it if your school allows that. That way more people in your area can also help support the LFL cause they will see it on the world wide map.

    • @bookofdust
      @bookofdust 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryan61384 No, it was a very exclusive private school that had zero outsider policy on visitors to campus who weren’t family members. The parents would have freaked out from the stranger danger issues.

      @@bookofdust Oh ok. Some of the schools I have been by have the library right near the city sidewalk so you don't have to walk that far up on the property.

    • @Shellyish
      @Shellyish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael,
      I love that you set up an unofficial LFL on your school grounds! I wanted to do something similar for my husband's work.
      Thank you for the wonderful feedback on Esperanza Rising. I am completely unaware of Valley Fever and must ask my parents about that. You've piqued my interest in the topic especially since it hits so close to home for me. Made a mental note to check out Pan and her illustrations! She sounds absolutely wonderful.
      You've hit the nail on the head with your definition of "middle grade." I'm still having trouble switching my language over because "middle grade" still means 6th-8th only. Surely, I'll get there soon. My Middle Grade March picks will probably be bought or acquired recently. I've picked up recently.

    • @bookofdust
      @bookofdust 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Shellyish One if the most bizarre things, and I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but it is documented, is that California created the whole extensive prison industrial complex system in the Central Valley knowing that Valley Fever was rampant and that it would kill off inmates, primarily Brown and Black peoples. Over a thousand of them have died from it and it has made tens of thousands ill. Those dirt filled prison exercise yards are the perfect petrie dish for exposure, as of course are the fields where all the migrant workers pick and harvest the food- in the past as well as the present. Esparza Rising first exposed me to what it was, but it’s was so disheartening to find out it’s not just an historical issue, but extremely prevalent today. I never fail to be amazed by things I discover in children’s books that open my eyes to historical things not usually covered much in adult books.

    "Middle grade" for books is for ages 8-12, so yeah not the same as the grades in middle school! It's in the middle between YA (ages 13-17) and chapter books for early readers (~ages 6-7). Obviously kids often read books outside of their age category, but these ages are the approximate target audience at least.
