Uhh... they were both teachers in the film. They didnt make much money at the start. Shes not happy because of the money. Shes happy because she loves him and knows how long and how consumed he was with accomplishing this goal. She wanted it for him too.

Yeah, you get free room, board and 2 meals a day for free, but the ammount of time and effort you have to spend to make it to that level ultimately does not match the value of the job.
