Two delightful churches and a lovely walk. I think that oak tree does signify a very old hedge. It makes me wonder how much our landscape changed after the great storm of 1987 which felled 15 million trees in the south East’s
There's a rather lovely tea room at Sullington Manor Farm; I believe all profits go to the upkeep of the church. We "discovered" this hidden gem only last Sunday and had a gorgeous light lunch there, having intended to just have a cup of tea.
It's beautiful at Sullington church. I have sung with the South Downs Folk Singers there at a couple of events in the past, and should have done so again in June, but of course.... Interesting to see the walk between the two churches.
My biggest dream is to visit England and see all these beautiful places you share with us. Thank you so much for making these videos, friend. Greetings from Brazil 💕
Thank you for another wonderful walk ... especially beginning and ending with a church. The best part was the Galloping Horse sign.....by the time a person would read it, the horse would be gone...if you don’t hear the galloping first, something is wrong. 😊
I agree with you on a walk in the morning, the quiet and coolness is wonderful! After watching several Time Team episodes I've come to recognized that when you see a church next to a manor house you can assume that the owners built the church for their own use. Interesting when you think about it. Their faith in going to heaven because they built it was very strong, but I wonder what their god would have really thought of them if they didn't allow the common people to use it! Where I live there are two churches named Saint Joseph just four miles apart. Both in the Gothic style, and made from the local red sandstone, and are quite impressive looking.
That was a nice surprise to see the start of the walk at that church. That was a great walk to see as I've only gone up into the hills after you passed those private houses just after the start. Epic again Mr Vobes
Two very lovely churches w/ a beautiful Beautiful little old Manor house at the 2nd! Can't wait until you are allowed to go back into churches again. The 2nd church looked like it had quite a bit of stained glass & it would have been nice to see what it looked like w/ the sun shining thru it!!! Yes, very hot where I am right now too! It reached 102°F (39°C) today. Just way too hot for my liking!!!😓☀️🌡🔥
Richard, as I'm sure you know, you can gauge the age of a hedgerow by counting the different species of tree or shrub in 30 metre stretches of hedgerow. Several 30 m stretches should be counted in each hedgerow. The average number of species equates to the age in centuries. It is advisable not to start counting close to the start of a hedge where anomalous species may occur and only established hedge plants are counted, not seedlings.
Wonderful walk! I emailed you a while back with regards to my grandfather who walked these paths and made a journal back when he left the RAF, but unfortunately work had set me back massively so I've been unable to film. Near the conservation area in to your video was when he met a chap repairing a fence and there was an amusing incident with a bull. Thanks for showing us this wonderful area, I will get around to doing similar. There are some wonderful areas from Sullington to explore, especially the four hills. Good luck on your current adventures! Ricky.
Richard, I often like to try & follow the route of your walks on Google Maps & on this one I managed to follow as far as the “galloping horses” track but then could not see how the route deviated along the shady path. Soon after that your arrived at the end point but I cannot find a St. Mary’s church in Storrington? I wonder if you ever make Google tracks of your walks available so others may enjoy the exact same walk as you have so enjoyable described?
Thanks Richard, great video as ever. This one looks doable with a buggy too, which is something I always look for! Was the A24 crossing stepped or ramped?
Very nice and brilliant place.
Thanks for visiting
that's a lovely scenic walk
That was a lovely walk and just what I needed this morning..
A lovely walk. So peaceful, loved the yew tree at the end.

What a stunning beautiful walk 🌱
Well done Richard, great vlog. Thanks.
I could have followed you further today as it seemed everywhere you walked there was something beautiful to see. Many thanks.
That was enchanting, especially that magnificent Yew at the end!
Lovely walk Richard with lovely church.
For some reason I kept expecting Martin Snow in his trademark orange jumper to pop up!
Great walk, thank you. Lots of interest along the way. Never knew they put wool down on the gallops and I love green tunnels 🙂

Lol the galloping horse, very good.
Michael White, thanks. I needed a laugh so I thought I’d share it.
Lovely walk. Bella and I must explore Sullington village and it’s ancient church which look very beautiful 👍
Bella and I are actually sitting on the bench outside the church enjoying the beautiful scenery and our lunch! 🐶👍😉

The beautiful Alexandra Bastedo is buried in Sullington. Her grave can be seen @ 11:10 the gravestone with the slant on the top edge.
I am big fan of 'The Champions'. I must visit the church.
Thanks, I did this walk today except I carried on to Chantry Hill and then went up to the SDW and circled back, great stuff!
Nice one!
Very different walk at Mary's going into woods see different things round

Crikey 102F...too hot! 🔥🤭😉
@@PortsladeBySea way too hot!!!🤢🤮🤪😵😅
I wonder if that second church was a private chapel attached to the Manor house ?
Many big houses had churches in their grounds.
Excellent 👌. Eaglegards...
Thank you! Cheers!

Lovely video and I enjoyed it very much.
What is the significance of graveyards always having a yew tree???
Thank you for a wonderful walk. The path seemed magical at times. Glad that it started and ended with two impressive churches.
Often the yew trees are older than the church, and appear to be on ancient sites, probably planted by pagans. Most churches have them.
Nice solid wall around Sullington church, the holy lamb of god won't get in there and eat yew leaves.

It was st Mary's at Sullington I went to. From the horse track it was a dead straight 500 yards to the church.
Thanks Richard, great video as ever. This one looks doable with a buggy too, which is something I always look for! Was the A24 crossing stepped or ramped?
The crossing is on bridge so neither ramped or stepped. Very easy.
