Should a PUPPY go to the DOG PARK?

  • In this video I talk about whether or not puppies should go to dog parks. For purposes of this video, this is done from a behavioural perspective and any veterinary considerations are ignored. Please talk to your veterinarian for those considerations. Taking a fairly young puppy to an off-leash dog park might be a little bit more risky than a lot of well intentioned people think from a behaviour development point of view. This video covers the reasons for that and offers some alternative arrangements for puppy socialisation. I also share a list of things to do and consider if you want to take your teenage or adult dog to the dog park. Most importantly, I explain that not all dogs will enjoy going to the dog park and that we should be okay with that. I hope you find this content helpful.

Super interesting video. I took my dog to a dog park and she got attacked. She is doing so much better now, and I am so proud of her. This video literally goes over exactly what happened to my dog. Now, we don't take her to dog parks, but let her off-leash in fields so she can still run around with other dogs. Thanks so much for this video, its super awesome and informative. :)

How on earth do you find dogs for puppy dates if you just got a puppy?!

You find them in your community. Reach out to people in your area, friends, family, puppy school, dog day care, vet, etc.

I have never understood the concept of dog parks. Why would anyone expose their dog to the possible dangers of mixing with the risk of irresponsible owners (and their mobile phones that take their attention away) and the possibility of their aggressive dogs? My Japanese Spitz is very social and has never been to a dog park. She loves people and other dogs, possibly too much ( she jumps on people) and has never been to a dog park, but has met other dogs and people socially with great successs.

Thanks for your comment Patricia. It's great to see everyone's experience on this topic. Hopefully this video helps to get people to carefully consider whether or not their dog should go to the Dog Park. For the vast majority of the situations I think that it is simply best to avoid. There are some exceptions though.
