    Great to see Jeff Williams work his way back into contention. He started pressing as MJ blew by him in the first 100m. Mike Marsh still made the team and was classy in defeat. Always good vibes from him. Carl? Well, he's just Carl. He had one more crowning achievement to come at the '96 Olympics Games in the long jump.

    As the commentator said, "Mike Marsh and under-appreciated champion." Damn right! People only remember Johnson being sick in Barcelona instead of the majestic series of runs Marsh put together, especially his 19.73 easing up at least 10 metres out. Had Marsh broken Mennea's record in that semi by running through the line, his profile would have been so much bigger and Johnson's record would have carried less. A healthy Johnson would have been hard pressed to beat the Barcelona version of Marsh.

    • @benimellal8284
      @benimellal8284 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thats the problem with Marsh and others, running 19,73 in semi and 20,01 in the final..this kind of desorder never belong to Michael.... Michael is smarter or lets say it is question of harmony, he was able to stay cool in the begining and running just enough to get to the final, only then when he doesnt care nore about the world record in danger nore about the poor guys who are condamned to follow him and fight for secound place..and thats what makes him the beter one in history ( including the tal nice guy Usain Bolt).

    I'm just saying that Watts and Marsh won because MJ wasn't competing in those respective events, though he would have had to run very well. Johnson won the World's in 91' and was ranked number 1 in 92 before the food poisoning. Either way though, you are right Marsh deserves lots of credit as does Watts, both were key members of US relay teams also.

      exactly brother, he was suppose to be the favourit of wining the olympic 200m of Barcelone 1992, but few weeks before the olympics he got that food poisnin in the restaurant called Alkandil in spain ( Michael mentioned it in his autobiographi book (slaying the dragon), he started recovering but the time of the olympics comes a bit too early and stil he even participate and went to the semi final, it was one of the bad stories of that olympics.

    Always possible, just not sure Johnson at that time would have quite matched Marsh, though certianly later versions of Johnson would have. Nonetheless, Marsh never got the credit he deserved which is sad. Not sure I know what you mean about Watts. Did you mean that a healthy Johnson would have beaten Watts if he ran the 400? Or did you mean prime Watts VS prime Johnson?

    • @benimellal8284
      @benimellal8284 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the difference is that Marsh and Watts were never stable, they can run one or 2 good races in their short carrier, while Michael maintain to be good and stable for more than a decade. Marsh did run 19,73s in semi final while in the final he runs 20,01 !!! you will never find this kind of scenario ( desorder) with Michael.

    I think SMTC had some issues with Johnson (or anyone who was getting shine that wasn't them) So I think that's why Johnson gave that sort of frosty greeting to Lewis. BUT, as we learned 4 years later, Johnson was capable of being a childish dick when it came to some of his antics on the track. He was a great runner. But he had an ego that made it difficult to like him.

    Hmmm not sure Johnson was quite good enough over 400m in 92 to beat Watts. He was still developing, wasn't really until 93 he really started making serious noise over 400m. By then Watts wasn't the same (plus his shoe fell apart lol). But once again, this IS Johnson we are talking about so you never know. You are dead right in saying that Marsh and Watts deserve a lot of credit, they are both overlooked as Johnson was each of their successors.

      Carl Lewis and MJ had issues for years. Most of it related to many comments Carl made and Carl's coach. The biggest issue was Carl's coach (who was the head coach for USATF) talking down on MJ and leaving him off the 4x400 1991 WC team. See the video below.
