Solar is so cool in trying all those different activities. She knows the importance of staying active, so even if she didn't like exercising, she kept on exploring activities that would be fun and challenging. The way she continually pushes herself to try new things and stay open-minded is a big reason she can tap her potential in so many areas. This is so admirable.

I’m glad how he brought attention to being skinny fat. Most people equate being skinny as healthy, and only people who are obviously overweight, as unhealthy. You can totally be skinny and have dangerously high body fat, and cholesterol. He never shamed her, told her she looks great, but we just need to lower your BMI. I like this guy! Solar was a great sport! Most idols would never have that information put out there. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Yes women do have more body fat than men but if you pay closer attention to the video, solar herself mentioned that she almost got put into the mild obese category due to her body fat, it's not really due to her weight, that's why the trainer also said she is the skinny fat type and a lot of people don't pay attention to body fat but it does matter :) Yeah they were pretty dramatic about it but they had to do that since it's a tv show plus what he said about pigs having 25% body fat is said to shock her to work out more 😂 what could probably have caused them to react more dramatically was because she does so many exercises and she does look very lean and has abs so they were expecting a lower number

    • @alria2133

Body fat % have nothing to do with overweight, you can under 50kg and still have 30% body fat. The problem is higher % fat mean less % on muscle and skeleton structure. That why skinny-fat types is way more dangerous, thier bone can break easy and get serious injuries.

We also have to take into account that they are working out for a “Fitness” Magazine. Their goals might be realistic for the body building community. Solar isn’t a body builder so of course he might be a little dramatic due to the expectations models for a fitness magazine would have. Of course at the end of the day YSC could have used a different example instead of a pig. I am glad that they didn’t set impossible goals for solar and that she’s a strong determined woman!

That part about pigs having 25-30% body fat is just wrong on so many levels. Honestly shocked that they aired it.
    1. We are not pigs. What is healthy for a pig isn't necessarily healthy for a human
    2. The "acceptable" body fat % for HUMAN women is 25-31%. Solar is at 22%, on the leaner end of the "fit" category. Athletes typically have 14-20%
Him basically calling her a pig for having LESS fat than is necessary to be healthy is sooooo fucking rude, harmful to her self-esteem and the self-esteem of everyone who is watching this and potentially harmful to her health.
Not to mention they asked for her AND Arin to publicly confess their insecurities with their body. Disgusting. Why was their first instinct to ask Arin her insecurities? And of course, she's backed into a corner where she has to talk about it and then laugh it off.

22% body fat percentage is actually considered as fit, which is > acceptable range (25-31%). The trainer should have never said that she was 'skinny fat' since it will give unrealistic ideas to the viewers. But considering how she is aiming for the cover of a health magazine, they prob think that there is some room for improvement - especially, considering that they are professional bodybuilders.

  • @MrAusterror
    @MrAusterror 3 ปีที่แล้ว +107

The body fat percentage device they were using should only be used as an estimate. They are not very accurate. However they are useful for individual relative measurements. Thus Solar can repeat the measurement after a few weeks and track progress. The number in of itself is meaningless. How that number changes is important. Different brands, however, will report different numbers.
These machines can be easily confused. Drink less water and don't eat any salt and that number can change a bunch. Not great for tracking day to day changes. But useful over the long term.

Those kind of comments to someone like Solar can make viewers feel badly about themselves. You can see Solar felt bad. It's this kind of shaming that causes even healthy people to develop eating disorders and other issues, including self-harm and worse. It's also a huge blow to self-confidence and self-esteem. They are going to feel bad. It's more than likely going to make them unhappy with themselves, and feel ashamed. You should be encouraged to lose weight in a positive manner, not a negative and cruel one like having your fat percentage be compared to an actual pig, an animal that is largely stigmatized and considered grotesque. My big sister is crazy about exercise and has that coveted 15% body fat. I'm not that way, so guess what? She fat shames me and makes me feel horrible. I really respect boss yang, but some of his words in this video can be misleading. 20% - 30% of fat is actually the range that is healthiest for women body to be in, while for men it is 10% - 20%. Getting lower than those ranges will make you look great and toned, but it has many down affects that will really be bad for your health. I agree when he said that she is skinny-fat, but if not explained properly, one could think they are fat. But it just means that you’re a slim person who doesn’t have much muscle. Comparing her body fat to a pig was just a bit too much and made me feel uncomfortable to hear Solar calling herself a pig when she is clearly not. I just wanted to say this because many young girls and boys are watching these, and if they get wrong information, they’ll suffer a lot from many problems like low self-esteem, body dysmorphia, and more. I just hope Solar didn’t get affected with boss yang’s words, stay confident, and be the queen she already is. But whatever she chose to do with her body is all up to her.

22% body fat is perfectly fine for an adult female. Calling her a pig and whatnot, UGH. He's trying to aim for competitor body status, which is not possible or healthy to even maintain for women. There's a reason why loads of female body competitors have health/body issues such as losing their periods, etc. cause they're at such low body fat percentages to maintain healthy organ function. This is what was so annoying about living in Korea; fitness/nutrition information is so backwards and flawed as they're still learning about exercising and health dieting. They need to catch up.

I'm seeing a lot of people in the comments shocked at this thinking Solar with her abs and built is unhealthy because she has 22% body fat and the rest probably muscle.
So, I hope you all know that % fat isn't everything. A severely malnourished person will probably have less than that, but would you consider that healthy?
It's as important to focus on the amount of % lean body muscle as well.
For example, Solar is very active and has really good stamina, she also has visible muscle stores, which tells me she probably also has high lean muscle mass. If you want to be fit THIS is what we should be aiming for, not just a lower fat %.
It's also important not to go extremely low with a fat percent because our bodies need fat. Our brains and nerve system are made of mainly fat. How can you think or move properly if you have low fat stores?
I hope you all won't feel discouraged, in reality Solar is very fit and healthy and you can be too. I'd recommend you following her exercise videos and challenge yourself to complete them :)

When I first watched this, their discussion about body fat percentage and how Solar is supposedly "skinny fat" had me surprised and thinking. But after encountering more info about it, 22% isn't actually bad. I learned that the normal/healthy percentage for women is higher than that of men's. Solar's 22% is actually considered fit. But I guess Coach Yang was probably aiming for the athlete percentage which is around 14-20% since they're shooting for a fitness magazine.
But at the end of the day. women need more body fat.. and unless you intend to live like a top caliber athlete, you don't need to have less than 20%.
