  • Top of the line gear is a lot of fun but, Budgets are important. Can upgrading parts on an affordable bass make it sound better and more fun to play? I fixed up my busted up 2005 Squier P Bass guitar with a new electronics, pickups, bridge, and strings. How does it sound? Tell me what you think in the comments.

    One year later…
You did a fine job. And, that bass is a keeper. Hardware is almost there but a new bone nut wouldn’t hurt and dressing the frets along with leveling would put it in the winner’s circle.

Thank you so much! And I totally agree! Although based on how much trouble I had with the basics I definitely would have ruined it by trying to do the nut and frets myself 😂

@@ChristopherBeanMusic Nice work and I enjoyed watching, especially because of the significance of the bass. One step at a time. I'm currently working on two Squiers that I picked up for next to nothing, as well as my first electric guitar, which is older than that bass. Wish me luck! I've also run into issues every step of the way so far, but that makes me appreciate it more when I'm done.

@@RyanScutt-vf1et Thank you! I’m primarily a guitar player but MAN is bass fun! A completely different mindset that I enjoy getting to explore from time to time. 🤘

Your original music was worth the wait. Surprised at the light gauge string set, but sounded great in the mix. This was an honest demo. I appreciated the learning curve Christopher.

Hey there Ryan, I went light gauge strings due to a hand injury a couple of years back. Thanks for checking out my video and the kind words!

Thanks for reply. I certainly know about injuries. I started out w light guage and loved the flexibility.

Nice work on the bass. Thanks for sharing. I actually wanna do the same thing with a bass I have. It’s an old bass, cheap from the 80’s… if I change the strings and pick up and probably tuners it will be a whole new bass!

Here's a tip: use refined linseed oil from the fine arts supply store on dark fretboards. It also works as a cleaner except in the grungiest of cases. At first apply and let it soak in until it's gone, repeat until all the dry patches are gone. A new fretboard can use 4-6 coats.

I’ll definitely give this a go - the fretboard on this base has already lost the luster added back by the Dunlop fretboard oil I used in this video. Thanks for the tip and for watching! 🤘

Great Video!! I'm Currently having issues with my Squire bass, the sound literally just dropped out (3rd time this has happened) and i took it apart, couldn't see anything then it would miraculously jump back into life and play again. which i cant get my head around, its only like a year old but im leaning towards the pickups being faulty

Thank you for watching! If it’s an intermittent issue it could be a loose or bad solder connection. It could also be a short in an instrument cable. Best of luck tracking down the issue!
