If you cut the tile on your board you wouldn't need to transport it and it would not get the distortion. Loved the tip of just sliding the cutting wire over the wooden spacers. So smart.
try dusting your clay with cornstarch to release the woodblocks. Also, a couple of sheets of newspaper under the tiles when cutting might make them easy to transfer to your bats without distorting them. Enjoying your videos!
I am 5 sec into the video, but I just have to comment! This is exactly what I was considering doing myself!! Looking forward to the video - this is the energy I aspire to reach
wooowww the final result is incredible. its so beautiful! I love how the tiles arent perfect and they have a bit of variation in tone from one to the other, its so gorgeous! Itès probably too late to be helpful but I bet having a bin of cornstarch to dust on the wooden block before stamping would help with the sticking!
@@benjaminshaw I'm so glad you found the video helpful and good luck for making your own tiles :) For bisque I stack them on top of each other about max 5 tiles together so they aren't too thick. Thank you! Su x
Perfect timing for me! I plan to make tiles for a back splash in our kitchen. I like the way you used the wriggle wire for the back texture. As for those beautiful woodblock presses, I wonder if you have tried using a layer of cling film on top of the clay, or a sprinkle of corn starch? these may help the clay release cleanly, although the plastic wrap may obscure or soften the pattern. Thanks so much for this timely and informative video. Your bathroom tiling looks so beautiful!
This is awesome. I never would have thought of doing it this way. If you got slab sticks that are the height of your flat boards plus whatever depth you have the sticks now you could place the square onto the board before you roll the texture in so you don’t have to pick it up once it has the texture and you cut it out!!
Incredible. This is a really tempting way to make our bathroom distinct and warm! You mentioned the recipe for the green tiles, but did you mention where you got the recipe for the "opal" tiles? They are truly stunning. Thank you for making the time to make this.
I tried to type instructions on how to avoid lifting cut tile off canvas to put on bat, it's stops distortion and any warping that might happen. I can't type it clearly 😂 I'll do a little video and send it to you ☺️
Awesome video! I want to make backsplash tiles for my kitchen and am wondering what type of clay you used. I was just going to use grey stoneware but am wondering if you have any other recommendations for durability. Thanks!
Thank you so glad you enjoyed the video! I used a flecked light buff stoneware - I think any stoneware will be fine as long as the glaze you use it durable. Thanks! Su
I haven't worked with clay since I had a high school summer ceramics program. It really was so much fun. I am inspired watching your processes though, so thank you for sharing. I do have a question though,... The batton wood you have for drying the tiles,... What kind of wood is it? Do you buy them premade, or can you make them yourself? Im excited about making tiles and would like to try it. Also is your canvas just raw canvas from a fabric shop, or is it oiled or anything special like that?
Hey! Im so glad you're inspired to work with clay gain! The wood is made from a water resistant MDF that we buy from a company in the UK called Hartley and Noble they do ship worldwide I think. I'm sure you can make your own but you have to get the water resistant MDF otherwise they will warp I think a thick plywood might also work. The canvas i just a normal thick one - I did get it from a pottery store but Im sure one from a fabric store will be fine. I hope that helps and so let me know if you have any other questions! Su xx
@@BlankEarthCeramics Thank you for answering my questions, that's so sweet of you. Yes, I am interested in trying ceramics again. I shall have to try and get the special MDF boards and some canvas to try making tiles. Thanks, again.✨✨✨
@BlankEarthCeramics welcome for sure and thanks to you as well, can you tell me how you got the applying side of the tiles ridges on the times and what stage you did it?

Hi ! I love love love your videos ! :) My wood table got moldy under the plaster batt when I was reclaiming my clay on it, has it ever happened to you ?
Hey! Thank you! It does sometime, but move my plaster batts around a lot, so they've never kept in one place for a long time. Also, I prop them up on bits of wood to make sure there's airflow underneath, and I'm sure that helps stop mould growing
Stunning result. Is it a "thing" that you can find a kiln space for hire to do this? It needs to be cost effective too. I would dearly love to make my own. Bx
this is amazing! I loved it! I have seen people dry their tiles on top of each other without a separator like you've shown here - do you have any experience with that? would you advice against it? Thanks xx
Ah thank you! Yep you can also dry them like that - I’ve done that before without any problems. What I did was cut the tile and place between the boards then when they had firmed up a little I put them in a big stack without the boards to dry out completely. My reasoning was that they might stick together if it’s fresh clay but as they dry they should come apart anyways. Def give it a go xx
Hey you can calculate the shrinkage - this clay is 12% but we also made 10% more than we needed to be safe. When the tiler put them on the wall he just cut the edges to size :) This clay was a stoneware with some grog in it (www.potclays.co.uk/flecked-stoneware) but there are some clays specific for tiles like this one: www.potclays.co.uk/miller-tile-body
