Bass has a weird projection issue, he sounds too confined, Raimondi did better at this role, but overall this performance is better than Abbado's, mostly due to clearer sound of percussion and braas

Even with old recording tech, and the difference of our modern concept of sound, the trumpets sound really menacing and cool in the Dies Irae. I performed this many times in Barcelona and Buffalo, as clarinetist.
Another added bonus at this spot. If you listen carefully, you can hear Toscanini shouting along to the dudes.

@@adorobruce assolutamente.

In my opinion, this is the very best recording of Verdi's Messa da Requiem there is. However, I do think that it is most unlikely that his (Toscanini's) loud cry,, during the 'Dies Irae' section, is from the 'live' Concert. I would think it to be an edit, taken from the rehearsal recording. Where such an edit begins and ends, I cannot say, There could be many edits throughout the work. Only RCA will know how this recording was prepared for release. The result is amazing, nonetheless.

This Verdi Requiem is Supreme, the only bad thing is that you can hear certain people in the audience coughing, the rest is PHENOMENAL, with First-Rate Singers, and that remarkable DIES IRAE that in very few recordings sounds like this Epic, conducted by an Italian Maestro, who knew about Opera, knew about Verdi and who was a friend of Puccini, so He lived it. Around 11:04 min you can hear the excitement of the Master (something very disrespectful for any performance).
