One of the amazing advantages of the internet is that someone gets to post and we get to listen to some of the great recordings of the past. I had the privilege of being the producer for these recordings with John Eliot Gardiner and these wonderful singers and musicians, that we recorded for Philips at the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona. It is great to hear the production again and to notice that the recorded sound and the mixes still work. Enjoy!

@Martha de Francisco : Bravissimo! Your work as producer of this recording is a testimonial to your dedication to excellence and quality, and I, for one, am deeply grateful. Thank you!

    • @JohnS0603
      @JohnS0603 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Martha de Francisco : Oh, Damnation! ! ! .... now I realize that this recording is not the same as the one I have greatly enjoyed and appreciated, which was posted probably 5 to 6 years ago. This imposter-one is a poor variant of the first -- mangled, at the end, with the replacement of the original taping with a very bland still-shot of the theater's ceiling for several minutes. All of the former familiar commentaries , including my own comments in which I poured out my gratitude, joy and ecstasy over the original, are now in the dumpster. All of the final audience applause and enthusiasm, and Sir John's final bows -- gone! Rubbed out!
This is a surely a case where bad taste and non-artistic judgment win over fine, high-quality production work!
In the original, your production crew took great care to capture with your technology and precision teamwork the grandiosity and success of that performance by Gardiner and the artists. Very grateful to you for that -- not many producers have gone far enough to accomplish that, IMHO.
Did Google and TH-cam have some other motivation - besides increased marginal profit - to throw away the original posting and replace it with this poor bastardized substitute?

Classical music is a source of solace in a fast-paced world. The delicate piano keys, the sweeping violin melodies, and the grandeur of the orchestra offer a sanctuary for introspection and reflection. It's a timeless art that resonates across ages. 🎹🌌

This remains one of my favorite performances recorded on video of any work of music, at any time in history... Each of the four featured performers are among the greatest ever SATBs, in particular Bonney and Rolfe-Johnson... What is so very remarkable is that, as astounding as these voices are individually, they blend and complement one another as well as any ever could... So often, voices that are outstanding as soloists don't blend well with other like voices... The ensemble singing achieved here is absolutely miraculous and without equal...

Toutes et tous chantent sans partition. Choriste moi-même, c’est colossal comme travail. Justesse, fondu, ampleur, rondeur des voix ! Hallucinant.

This performance took place exactly 200 years after the dead of Mozart (05-12-1991). That day there were hundreds of performances of the Requiem all over the world to pay tribute to the genius. I don't think any other man in history have ever received a tribute of similar magnitude.

When the world crumbles, when the structures of a civilization falter, it is good to return to that which in history does not flex, but on the contrary recovers courage, gathers the separated, pacifies without bruising. It’s worth recalling that the genius of creation is also moving in an history devoted to the destruction !

Outstanding performance in every way. Even though it 'could' slow-down a bit in most instances, I've gotten used to it and now rather enjoy its robust clarity and crispness. The vocals (both soloists and choir) are especially top quality, especially with the addition of countertenors (adding 'richness and solidity to the alto vocal line). The orchestra is outstanding. I think it's a performance like Gardiner, who is also an authority on classical instrument orchestras.
The sound is limitless, close to Mozart's time, the interpretation is modern, and the music is impressive.
I think the original score is the Beyer's version, but I think it's a very moderate harmonic.

I absolutely love these old video concerts of the past, with the great conductors. Gardiner is one of my favorites and his choir is quite exceptional. This is my favorite performance of this work I have heard so far. Thank you so much for posting this. Also on a related note.... another one of my favorite conductors is Robert Shaw. I have been trying to find video footage/concerts of him as well but there is little to none of him available. I know that he televised many of his Christmas concerts for example; and as far as footage of his performances in general, I know there must be plenty in existence. For instance, the documentary on him; "Man of Many Voices" excerpts many concerts of his, such as Handel "Messiah", a Brahms "German Requiem", and a clip of a Christmas concert with Morehouse College Glee Club. Do you think you could post a concert video of his? Anything of his.... I would be so grateful to be able to see one, if possible. :-)

I can't decide if I like more the huge sound of the 1991 Solti performance, or this smaller, more precise interpretation. The Solti bowls you over, while you can hear every nuance of the score in this version.

i prefer this, it's closer to how it would have been performed in Mozart's time. they're also using period instruments which is fantastic. there are so many layers and nuances in this piece and Gardiner and the performers do a wonderful job

The funniest thing is I'm writing a music paper on this concert and it's the music used in hunter x hunter for when the Phantom Troups are introduced.

ive heard a lot of different requiem's by Mozart on YT and this is by far one of the best!!! Great acoustics!!! Outstanding choir(i'm a singer and have pretty good idea), a great orchestra, and an outstanding director!!! Even the soloists aren't half bad, which usually annoys me. Although the tenor is meh.
