no, THANK YOU for posting this video. After binge-watching these videos, you (meaning I) start to feel insecure about who you are as a student or a person. I've started writing my Common app essay and I felt super stressed about it. Thank you for reminding me that I don't need an ivy league or top-tier school to be successful. Much love
As someone who is "bay area average" and currently going through the admissions process, it was nice change of pace to have a real college admissions video. Thanks for making it.
Wow! You are going to go far in life! With your level of maturity and realism you are going to do well no matter what you do. It’s so refreshing to see a young person take these hits of rejection with such a philosophical outlook on it all. So many place their worth on getting into the best universities and achieving only the best grades all of the time that they forget that sometimes the university that is best for them often isn’t the big name, it’s often the one with excellent pastoral care where developing the whole person is what counts, not just the academic person. I think you’ll do well no matter where you choose to study.
I'm a high school senior applying to schools now, and I just want to say I have so much respect for you. This is the most authentic college decisions video I've watched (and I've binged hundreds of them). I believe that the way you react to situations defines you as a person, and I love how you explained the likely reasons that this process was harder for you, but also did not disparage the process or the admissions officers. I'm going to try and adopt your mindset throughout the process. You have an amazing energy and I think you have lots of good karma heading your way. Davis is an amazing school and I'm sure you've made the most of it. Thank you for posting this video and lots of love ❤
You know, it wasn’t just the number of students applying to UC’s and top schools that made the process unusually competitive this year. Think about all of the kids who got in last year and deferred because of COVID. That likely left a lot less space for kids applying for this fall.
@Katie Ellen Tu I don’t know if the number of kids “cheating” during COVID made that much of a difference in the size of the applicant pool. I’ve read quite a few articles about declining grades and involvement in school districts caused by remote learning. I think the decision to make ACT/SAT optional at many top colleges had a much bigger impact on how many students applied.
This was such a good video. I get caught up in the prestige and name brand that these T-10, T-20 schools offer without thinking about If the school is a right fit for me. After careful consideration I realized that my safety school is a much better fit than UCLA, USC, Harvard, etc. and that makes rejection hurt so much less. Where you go doesn’t define you as a person. You are super mature, have a great mindset, and work ethic based on your GPA and ECs. You’ll be successful wherever you go!
i LOVE your talk at the end it is honestly such a good message that people should listen to more. even if you make it into a T10 or T20 school, it doesn't get easier from there and it matters more your own hard work and determination than it does the school you go to. wishing you luck in the future!!
What you make of your college experience is much more important than where you go. You can go to Harvard and have all the resources in the world, but if you don’t take advantage of them, it’s worse than going to your state school and taking advantage of the resources there. Some of the most successful people I know didn’t get into a top undergraduate institution straight out of high school, they just made the most of the institution they were at and transferred, graduated at the top of their class, networked, etc. Going to a T-10/T-20 is an amazing opportunity, but not going to one definitely won’t prevent you from achieving your dreams
Congratulations on your acceptances! Wow a 3.95 gpa is really incredible. Be proud of yourself for what you have accomplished, you've got a bright future ahead of you!
Hi! I also got into 2 UCs and rejected by IVYs + other reach schools, but I still posted a video like you : ) we rock !! and congrats on your acceptances
You will end up where you are suppose to and you will thrive. Your stats are really good, actually, it’s great. I’m shocked you didn’t get into the majority of the UCs but I think the unprecedented number of applications made this an unpredictable year.
Thank you for posting this! I applied to 8 schools (as an international student) and got into 2 (waitlisted/ rejected from the rest). Although I am very happy with the two I got into, I was starting to, as you said, equate my self-worth to how many acceptances/ rejections I got. The admission process seems to have been very random & unpredictable this year. I appreciate this video and really love the message at the end! :)
I hope that all those kids scrolling through these college decision videos come across this one. Love the ending message you gave! I was in the same exact boat 2 years ago and totally could relate to watching all those college decision videos. Heightens your expectations way too much. I’m gonna give some advice thats said very often but not appreciated enough. If you’re not feeling the colleges you got into, think about community college. With the amount of APs you took, you could totally transfer in one year to USC and even UCLA. You could even apply to Cornell (has a p high transfer acceptance rate) and other private universities. Just needed to get that off my chest bc it was useful for me and might be for others. Do your research and figure out what path is right for YOU. UCD and UCSC are great schools and know many ppl who love it there! From this one video I saw, you have a good personality and will be successful wherever you go.
I LOVE your message at the end!! I’m a senior too and I’ve been having the EXACT same thoughts as you recently. The app process was rough, but I really came out of it with a wider perspective (and humbled lol). Good luck in college, I’m sure you’re gonna kill it!
This video definitely has to reach many people...Everyone needs to know about the reality...Congrats on getting into the 2 UCs..but moreover Congrats on destigmatizing✨
I have watched a bunch, pile, plenty of decision reaction videos, and, in all of them, there was at least an acceptance to an IVY. Even though, your video was the first one I felt confident and comfortable enough to give a thumbs up and leave a comment. Thank you for that! A resume for sure does not define our self-worth!!!
Thank you for this video and making it so honest and so true it was really helpful to hear. I went through a similar experience with my college rejections this year and it sucks so much but you have such an educated outlook on it I’m so impressed - and also congrats!!! Where you end up going will be meant to be
Okay as an Australian who watches these every year i’m really confused by this one. Your stats looked really good not just average. You had a lot of extracurriculars too. Can someone explain why nearly every school rejected her? I understand the ivies but some of these were weird to me
As a former Californian high school student, I can think of why she was probably rejected from Ivies but am surprised about the UCs. Her extracurriculars are kinda what every student does in Cali tbh. I knew so many kids that did fundraisers and those summer programs. It doesn’t really stand out for Ivies. However, I know a lot of ppl who had the same stats as her that got into UCLA and people with lower stats that got into UCSD. The only thing I can think of is that she might’ve applied to a competitive major. And like someone mentioned, lots of ppl took a gap year leaving less room and all that COVID stuff she mentioned. I haven’t seen any other acceptance videos (this just happened to be on my recommended lol) but maybe they’ve also gotten just as competitive and picky as Ivies bc of how many kids applied.
as she mentioned shes from the bay area so a lot of the kids in her graduating class/area will have similar stats and achievements (the bay area is an incredibly populated region of cali mainly by upper middle class people). So many colleges that have a cap on the amount of students for each state/area will make it harder for bay area kids as thousands of them are applying to UCs and Ivies every year and prestigious schools often want diversity in location for students coming to their school.
hi sen!! im also a senior and yes, all these rejections were very painful and inflicted a lot of damage on both my mental health and the people around me. i totally agree with you on how college decisions is so romanticised and overemphasised as this 'life-changing event' (and don't get me wrong, it somehow is!) and sometimes we often overlook opportunities that we already have available to us. Thank you for posting this video and sharing your thoughts on college admissions :) you're going to do great in wherever you choose to commit to and i wish you all the best!
Its my turn, and the rejections have started. And this video is a light in dark times. This is what is holding me together. Sen, I cannot stress this enough, THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS.
i'm not even from eua (but also about to go to college) and yes girl, ur absolutely right, i've watched all of those college decisions and they are just like u said
What happened with the UCs? Are they for real? Your stats were great and out almost every video of “reacting to my college applications” I think yours was the best. It doesn’t matter where you get in or not, you’re gonna be great. Keep it up!
We, the class of 2025, will be recorded as the legends...8 AP exams with scores of 5, 800 chem/math, 35 ACT, inter/national awards, great ecs, recs will get you..........nowhere in UCs! YAY!
Thank you for a realistic video. I see all these videos where everyone gets in everywhere and it's very disheartening. While this wasn't a number of great outcomes, it was real so thank you !
As someone who applied to tons of IVYs and Prestigious schools and probably am gonna commit to a state school. I felt horrible and still kind of do but this video explains everything so well! Everything will turn out well!
yeah, honestly i'm still somewhat disappointed too, but i think those feelings are totally normal and expected after receiving rejection after rejection. hopefully we're able to move on and grow from this experience, y'know? wishing the best for you at your state school!
very well said. my name is on two waitlists of schools i thought i had really good shots at, but life just doesn't work like that sometimes. sometimes things just aren't meant to be, but i know i will succeed wherever i am planted next year!!
it was very strange this year i dont even think some unis looked at all applications. I know one guy that got waitlisted at irvine, san diego and LA but also one person who got into irvine and san diego but flat out rejected from LA not even waitlist like what how does that make sense XD.
Even if you don’t want to go to those schools being grateful and appreciative goes a long way. Some kids can’t and won’t be able to go to a really good school. So practice humility it will help you a lot in life .
i feel the SAME way about the "bay state average" except for where i live in massachusetts. Like if i worked as hard as I did in the town next to me I'd be valedictorian, but if I didn't go to one of the top 100 public schools in the country i dont know if i would have that drive to begin with. Anyways I'm a junior now and struggling to not burn out especially this year, but hoping it will payoff? maybe? idk lmao.
Hi there. I liked your video. I also wrote one of the pieces you linked to at the end. I didn’t find my way here through that. I just was watching you on my TV and then “THATS ME!” and got probably too excited given the tone of the content that proceeded it. DM me on Reddit if you’d like some help with your options going forward.
Things have certainly changed a lot since 2003 when I applied to universities. I have to wonder if it's even worth pushing your kids so hard as opposed to prioritizing quality of life (note, I am not indicating that the senanigans was pushed too much by her family).
SO I think the issue with your application or profile is that your ECs were very mediocre. Your grades were fantastic but your extracurriculars were below average of Ivy Caliber students, even though your grades and GPAs were on par.

Your thoughtful insight and perspective is refreshing amongst all these college videos. Way to go. Preach
Omg an actual human being that I can relate too. U did amazing and good for u for knowing ur self worth.
Thank you for the important message at the end. Where you go to college doesn’t define you or your success. 💕💕
