Outstanding song. Bobby Gentry is one of the greatest song writers of our time. Bobby Gentry is an American singer-songwriter who was one of the first female artists to compose & produce her own material. A lot of her songs were stories. Her biggest hit was in 1967 with "Ode To Billy Joe". Other songs are "Mississippi Delta", "Fancy", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Sunday Mornin" (with Glen Campbell) etc.

Bobbi was hugely talented! She, like Fancy in this song, got hers and got out of the music scene as quick as she got in.
I’d always liked this song but hadn’t heard it in over 20 years. It’s amazing in its deep and (like Ode) depressing details that, with her delivery, you can only sit back and marvel!

This solemn and self-help song was written by one of music greatest singer/songwriter Bobbie Gentry back in (1969). And in 1991Reba Macintire would cover bobbie's song. Making it even more famous with a new audience. It would become Reba's biggest hit and signature song. Note: If you want to see more of Bobbie Gentry dancing and singing. The mother knew the state would take care of the little baby, but as "grown woman", no one was obligated to take in Fancy. The last few dollars of the mother were the only thing that stood between Fancy being imminently homeless and potentially wealthy. The chance existed that Fancy might STILL be destitute, if things didn't go right...but the dress was a chance. I can't imagine knowing I'm dying very soon and I can either leave my infant to my destitute daughter without even enough for her to feed them...in the streets, or I can send her away dressed to kill and have the baby taken by strangers to raise. How awful...she dies with the futures of BOTH her children entirely in the hands of complete strangers, and she KNOWS she's headed for a pauper's grave that neither chikd will ever be able to find easily...if at all. Anyone talking about being disadvantaged here today, needs to understand this still exists as a reality all over the world.

The most hurting part in this song is when she says 'the baby's bout to starve to death.' It' shouldn't be like this anywhere. Babies shouldn't be starving to death and young women shouldn't have to sell their bodies to be able to survive.

This classic story song by Bobbie Gentry has sold over 25 million records on close to twenty covers. I want to share a funny story I heard about the song when Reba McEntire covered it in the early 1990's. Reba was doing a world tour sponsored by potato chip giant Frito Lay. They wanted to do a Reba commercial licensing the music of Fancy for it. One problem: Songwriter Bobbie Gentry rebuffed the 50k offer telling friends " no song of mine is going to used to sell corn chips" Frito Lay kept up the pressure to license the song. Finally an exasperated Bobbie Gentry instructed her rep to demand 1 million dollars in a take it or leave it offer thinking that would put an end to it. She was stunned when they pony upped the 1 million calling her bluff ! The commercial can still be seen on TH-cam.

Man.. . when i first heard this song a week ago in passing while watching "George & Tammy", my face was just like you guys'.
i couldn't believe what i was hearing, but i had to Shazam the mini series so that i could look the song up on TH-cam.
The story is old as time, but i completely understand.
i have never been that poor, but i get not having much and having to rely on natural resources and the kindness of strangers to survive. It really made me want to know more about Fancy.
i wanted to know more about her parents before her father ran off, her infant sibling. ..
THIS is the song that should have been made into a movie, NOT "Ode to Billie Joe".
i don't even understand why people were so captivated by a song about suicide, when a perfectly good song about survival in spite of everything was nearly forgotten.
