Gus and Benett are 100% right, get rid of the bunker. Not only are they trying so hard to be correct that they get calls wrong, they take minutes to rule on things that are basic and hold up the game!!
Although I was hoping for a Knights win, that bunker ruling proves what many of us have been saying since it was introduced, that the bunker officials don't understand the game. That was a fair try every day of the week. The Knights players obstructed each other. Why can't the refs ask for a review of a play from every angle that they could view on the large screens? Or have screens on the sideline for refs to review a play like in American football?
I feel for the on field refs, they've been copping from all angles for years & now they have someone in a studio in Sydney in their ear saying, obstruction, offside, high shot. I'm glad they rid the two refs, now they need to rid the bunker & allow the only people to chat to the ref be the linesmen like in the old days. If it's a close call for a try then go to the old video ref but apart from that rid the refs in the bunker & allow the on field ref to do thejob. It's all about the feel of the game & as someone that umpired at a national level in a different sport, unless u are focused 100% on the game for that hour then ur not apart of the game coz ur refereeing thru an earpiece. They may as well take the ref & linesmen out of the game altogether & referee the game straight from the bunker. If the rid the bunker & allow the refs to take back control of the game. The fans aren't stupid, they know it's not the on field ref f**ken up, we know it's the bunker & the bunker puts that ref in a bad & hostile environment in every game on a weekly basis & while the on field ref cops it the bunker hides behind him.... they're lucky they have any refs at all & are very lucky a lot of the refs come from bumf**k nowhere bush footy that have thicker skin than a wombats arse.

Most of them need the video ref to tell them when a player has touched a sideline or not and what's a forward pass not a forward pass I can hear them ask. The simplest solution is to have a few monitors on either side of the field where refs can view plays from every angle when they're not sure or even ask the bunker to play them on a grounds big screen. The bunker needs to have ex-1st grade players watching the game just to alert the ref when a dirty act has occurred in back play. The bunker should definitely not have the power to call for a sin-bin, especially not for high tackles, most of which are now happening when a player slips or is falling to the ground.
I'm not going to sit here and says Newcastle did not deserve to win. There have now been at least 4 games in the last 2 years where the Dolphins have been robbed of a try, field goal, missed knocked on due to wrong bunker calls. This season it likely cost the Dolphins a spot in the top 8. They missed a knock on last year vs the Raiders right before they kicked a field goal which cost the Dolphins a legitimate shot at victory and then admit they missed it apologise the week after like it means anything. I have two issues with this game. The referees and bunkers insistence on inserting themselves into games when they're not invited or wanted. And the NRL refusing to reinstate draws at Fulltime. The AFL does draws, Rugby does draws. Dolphins would have 3 draws this year if the NRL allowed them and would sit on 31 points in 8th spot. Lastly again the Knights were great and hats off to them and best of luck. However, a team going ahead 6-0, which yes it was a clear cut try, follow by Newcastle having to kick off to the Dolphins down 6-0 changes the whole dynamic of the game. Instead you incorrectly call no try and then give them a penalty to allow them to attack and score down the other end. I am so over this game and how the higher ups don't listen to the fans or people who know what they are talking about.

We saw it early in the year against Parra and we saw it against the Broncos. Now, the Dolphins have essentially been robbed of the possible spot in the top 8 and I would be furious if I were a coach or player in the Dolphins outfit. To come so close, battling all season with injured players to only have a call go against you for who scores the first try, it's heartbreaking. I turned that game off at the 60th minute when the bunker also called the JMK incident a penalty and not just him tracking towards the ball. It's lunacy. A few games this year where the NRL come out after and it's like stockholm syndrome honestly, "We're sorry we made the wrong decision, but you still love us right?"

Bunker is and was created so that games are fixed. Its not that the bunker officials dont know the rules, its that theyre given a clear script on how the outcomes of games should be and they make calls acoodingly.
If I was to complain I'd say the obstruction rule could be changed so that if the lead runner has no means of passing through the line due to a defensive decision of the 3 man any contact with the 4 man shall not be an obstruction, but that's not even a good change because the lead runner should not be entitled under any circumstances to make obstructive contact with a defender. The lead runner should either 1. stop short of the line or 2. evade all defenders, otherwise not run a lead shape. The game will be better off for attacking shape not being able to involve obstruction. In this case the obstruction probably did prevent brodie jones defending. Getting rid of the bunker 1. will not happen 2. is not a solution to the rules being bad (although not in this case) 3. will not improve the product and 4. will perhaps not satisfy viewers who will then question the referee more fiercely. Referees physically cannot adjudicate on every material action in an NRL game. You can leave less important spectacles up to vibes and instinct

This competition is so manipulated, controlled and managed from the media and the refs up hence the closeness of the competition. Maybe what we need is for the on field ref to watch the replay rather than people in the bunker. At least then the on field ref can determine the rulings on how he has refed the game already. But again another finals series looms and the way things are refed will change compared to how the regular season has gone. Look at this years origin series for example

When I was watching the game and this so called obstruction play emerged, I called it that the ref would go to the BUNKER, the Refs in todays game are almost useless, its as if they have been told to not make a decision on their own and you have a person watching the game in slow-mo, personally I would like to see the League get rid of the Bunker, have two refs on field and give the teams, 2 wrong challenges per half, one good thing about getting rid of the Bunker is the 6 again rule will be more than halved.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a repeated second look at a play to confirm the refs call. It’s best for all the fans and the game in general. However, I think the bunker should have limitations on what it is able to make calls on, namely obstruction plays and a few other things. Such moments should be solely in the hands of the referee.
There have been some absolute howlers, and sick of bunker sin bins BUT can thank the bunker for Tom Dearden legendary try save on Cobbo. Useless ref just awarded it instead of ruling it a try but checking if it went into touch or grounding
