Please could you take a look at Romain Axisa’s work at some point? He was a part of The Big Push with Ren and has some really beautiful songs of his own. He does instrumental guitar songs like ‘Django’ but he also has a delightful singing voice. ‘Happy Song’ and ‘75 Beats Per Minute’ are particularly enthralling songs. 🙏🏻 Thanks! 🥰

    Hi Justin,
Jim's son here. Was so lovely to hear you sing that. You did a fantastic job. Maybe a little episode on that song? (If you don't ask you don't get.) My dad has passed now (Nearly 10 years ago), but he always appreciated your vocal chops - and the songwriting!!
My band CITIZENS! used to rehearse underneath you at a rehearsal space in Putney, the owner of which was always saying how lovely and wonderful you all were.
I have two young children now so don't gig much or consume much pop culture at the moment (I'm looking forward to that ending sometime in....let's say 2027) but I really enjoyed this episode and will definitely watch some more.
This is a strange old TH-cam message isn't it? I don't normally write these kind of things but I really loved hearing you sing that and it was lovely how you sequed into it. I may be wrong but I'm not sure my dad was a direct influence on MGMT, but then again....who knows.
    Keep fighting the good fight
    Lawrence (Jim's son) Diamond

I recall seeing them at bonnaroo in 2009. They were god awful, as they later self declared. they were plucked from obscurity onto some large stages very much prematurely. I remember walking up towards the second largest stage at the festival durring "the youth" as they were reaching the chorus. I had never heard it before and it quite literally sounded like someones little brother being smacked in the balls. Still went and bought the album a month or so later lol

The thing about MGMT is that no two songs are similar, really. They play in a LOT of different genres of music, often on the same album. Some of it lands, some of it doesn't, but it's absolutely a band worth exploring sometime, as there aren't a lot of bands who have no fear to explore that way, as many pick a "sound" and stick with it in order to cement an "identity" in the market - and they don't. This has probably cost them the kind of "mega-success" they *could* have had if they had just stuck with making "Time to Pretend" or "Kids" over and over again - but instead, they just follow their own muse, which I have tons of respect for - and when their stuff *does* land, it's brilliant. But even the tracks that don't are always interesting.

MGMT is worth a deep dive. They are probably the most interesting band going currently. They have chosen a strange but wonderful path that sees them reinvent themselves over and over again with varying degrees of success. I think it's commendable. Their first album is damn near perfect (Oracular Spectacular) and it brought them instant success. Their second album (Congratulations) is a masterpiece in my eyes and it's nothing like the first album. I'm sure their label was unhappy about that. Loss of Life is revealing yet another side of MGMT. I love it.

Paul Simon is a master in travis picking. Dust in the wind is also composed around a travis pick.

Kids and Time to Pretend put MGMT on the map with their debut, but they have been consistently entertaining and interesting ever since. Justin, you might really dig a couple of their lesser known singles that no one has mentioned yet: Flash Delerium and Little Dark Age.

Never heard any of MGMT’s music before. Wasn’t expecting it to be so melodic & “pretty”. Very peaceful tune, reminds me of Dionne Warrick’s ‘Walk On By’ and The Mammas & The Papas for some reason 🤷🏻‍♀️ Guess it’s got a very ‘60’s feel to it. I like it. 🥰 Definitely one to lie down & chill out to. 😌

I love the song and the video is very touching. I first heard it the other day when it came out and now upon 2nd listen I am realizing that it reminds me of elliott smith, sounds like something that could have been on his Posthumus album from a basement on a hill, both musically and lyrically. i'm glad Mr. Hawkins was aware of the fact that Fine de Claire was an oyster because i was not. What a clever way to say "the world is my oyster"

My dad laughed at me and tried to cover up his embarrassment btw, when I sang to them before I tried out. Trauma, but its worth the content.
