  • After ordering 2 different clutch drums that were wrong for the Vintage Stihl 020AV, I'm just gonna MAKE IT WORK! Sometimes with Vintage Chainsaws you have to improvise and modify things to keep the old Beast Alive!

I think that vid title is farm rule #1. Way to go man, sometimes perseverance and ingenuity is what it takes. I'm tearing into my 015 to look at it's clutch now to see if it has those oiler notches lol!

This saw has sure been a challenge. Good to see you stihl have a sense of humor ! I have run into a fair amount of aftermarket saw parts that just are not made right, even some from Oregon. Looks like you are close to getting this saw whipped into shape !

You have been battling this saw... I'm broke so I always have to make it work 😆 🤣. Even when you don't have to just make it work, it's nice to challenge yourself and skills .

There is a lot of vintage stuff out there and it is to the point that it needs to have parts modified to fit.

Man, I hate it when you order a part that is supposed to fit you saw & it doesn't work when you get it. Thank goodness for grinders & ingenuity!

There are two different clutches for an 020AV. The original has shoes with a fiber pad like a brake pad - probably has asbestos in it so be careful with any dust in the drum - and it was replaced with a later steel-on-steel clutch. My guess is this was to do away with an asbestos source. The parts are not really interchangeable, as you found out. You have to buy the whole new clutch housing with its matching internals. You can source second hand fiber pad shoes on Ebay, but realise that these will probably be 30-40 years old. In most cases people are looking for them because the pads in their clutch have become unglued or have disintegrated. The chance of a 30-40 year old used replacement becoming unglued is high. I'm currently taking that chance. Best not think too hard about where the dust and fragments from the disintegrated pads ended up. If anyone has information that they were NOT asbestos then please share it.

Awesome Pete, Thank you for the information, I did not know they were Asbestos!...😯😉👍👍

When I saw you chuck that sprocket in your hand and pick up an angle grinder I knew this was going to be a precision operation 🤣

Great video subject Dan! A lot of aftermarket sellers are listing the 020 and the 025 clutch as the same but they're not! The 020 has the chain inboard and the 025 and others have the chain outboard. So how can they be the same? They're not.
