    Oh it's a shame you don't want to read Frankenstein! It's so good. The writing is REALLY beautiful. You just have to get past Walton's narration---which actually isn't that far in---and you're good. (Also, the letters are the entire book, technically. Because it's a story within a story within a story, Dr Frankenstein's narration is just in a really LONG letter.)

    Oh man, Frankenstein is great! I feel so sad that you haven't read it 😢. I used it on my AP Lit exam because the themes are fascinating and beautiful and tragic. Maybe the Dan Stevens audiobook would help? It made the book 100x better for me.

    • @jacquiz.6837
      @jacquiz.6837 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      re: Frankenstein: Skip the letters! I also read it for AP, and the letters don't really matter! Maybe that's blasphemy, but it's just a framing device. You know why the letters never show up in movie adaptations? Because they're not critical to the plot!

    Frankenstein is one of my all-time favorite books. The letters at the beginning are a little dense, but once you get to the main plot line, things really take off. I am always hesitant to read classics because I hate having to work through outdated phrases, but I swear this book is written just as clearly as any contemporary. It's amazing.

      @ReadEatGameRepeat 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      YES! a thousand times yes! ^_^ I am kinda tired of picking up a book absolutely loving it and then realizing its a series 90% in and that I have to wait X amount of years to know what happens.

    • @anna46792
      @anna46792 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brittney Jantzi but how do you find good stand alones? I read a lot of scifi/fantasy and they are generally in a series.

    • @brittneyd.8372
      @brittneyd.8372 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      aa A I don't read much fantasy or sci-fi. I think those tend to be more series style books. I read nonfiction and a lot of adult books. I find a lot more standalones in adult fiction than in YA. I also use the library a lot so then I don't have to buy a bunch of books that I have no prior knowledge of hoping they'll be good!

    • @anna46792
      @anna46792 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol i live in my local library as well. Less commitment and I can allways order the rest of the series from another branch if I need to.
      I think the reason ya has more series is because publishers assume that teens have more time to read then adults. But then again the wheel of time series is ment for adults and has 15 books 700 pgs each. *shrug* it might just be a genera thing.

    I totally get you regarding Frankenstein - I've read it and of course it's an interesting story but it's written in such a "way over the top" romantic style and the worst part of it are those endless pages of Landscape descriptions !!!! My memory of the book is mainly Landscape, Landscape, Landscape . . . . . .

    • @eleanorhenderson9896
      @eleanorhenderson9896 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wrote this up above but you probably won't see it so I'm going to put it here.
      Frankenstein is AMAZING! I totally agree I read the letters and was so close to putting it down but I ploughed through and it was amazing. The letters set up the book. They're told from the point of view of a Sailor going to find the Arctic Circle or something, its very Romantic and talks a lot about exploration and man's will. The sailor meets Frankenstein and saves him from downing and then asks im about his life. The letters are essentially him talking to his sister (or the reader) and saying 'hey i met this guy and he has a cool story... let me tell you!' and then you get the story of Frankenstein.
      So the letters sort of foreshadow the ending/set the scene in the sense of the Romantic period and the science/virture debate, but there are no key plot points.
      On the landscape thing: yes there is lots of the landscape but its actually really important because it shows you the difference between God-made beauty and natural beauty and then the Monster and what man creates, which is a really important theme throughout the whole book. So whilst boring, if you look at it through that lense, you get a much different appreciation.
      Hope this helped and I really hope you end up reading Frankenstein, its my favourite book and I cannot recommend it enough!

    13 Reasons Why (the book and show) is SO UNREALISTIC and honestly just awful in a lot of ways if you're someone (such as myself) who has actually struggled with mental illness or suicidal thoughts, so you're really not missing anything

    You should really try reading Frankenstein! The letters take up only a small part of the book, in fact the story is kind of framed like this (if I'm remembering correctly):
    {Letters[Victor's Narrative(The Creature's Narrative)Victor's Narrative]Letters}
    If you can get past the preface, it gets really good. I'm not much of a reader but I've read it twice and have enjoyed it immensely both times.

  • @wellthatsjustduckie

    Paused the video to say this... OMG Ariel the letters are so important to the frame narrative of Frankenstein. Walton's letters connect his ambition to that of Victor's and their obsession with finding glory. I've reread Frankenstein numerous times and I understand how the letters stopped you from continuing because that was my first experience with them too. I'm taking a Romantics class looking at Romantic themes through geographic location and I learned some really interesting things about the Arctic and British public interest in exploration, which is a parallel to advancement in science in that day and age. Like, I get it but when you examine and compare Walton and Victor and then untangle the frame narrative that is a story within a story within a story... and then it freaking reverses itself! Oh, I just. It's great.

    Frankenstein is a masterpiece but I can understand your hesitation! To help you out: this is a framework story (a story inside a story) so the first couple pages start with Victor on a ship telling this man about his life and where everything went wrong and THEN we jump back into his perspective all those years ago when he initially set out for college. Then the story goes from there and the beginning comes back into relevance at the very end. I hope that helps!

    Okay Ariel, my suggestion if you want to get through Frankenstein is just get the audio book and listen to it before you go to bed, and if you fall asleep the audio book will stop after a while and you can go back and see what you remember and repeat; I read a bunch of Agatha Christie this way and I ended up really enjoying it but I know I couldn't have paid attention for that long without listening to it! I finally read Frankenstein this year after years of meaning to and it was so worth it! Once you're past the few letters in the beginning and the narrator shifts to Dr. Frankenstein, it IS truly incredible and a pretty quick read. The prose is seriously stunning. Highly reccommended!

    Franksenstein is a complicated issue. The usual text is the third edition of the text, also known as the censored one. I'm disinclined to read it too. I read the 1818 text, the first edition text, known as the more philosophical one, and it left me with some wonderful discussions in my head about education and passions! The usual text is too much about pampering the almost-victorians for sales. Unfortunately. The whole book is in letters but don't worry about it, it's just a way to mark who the narrator is! If I remember correctly, they are only two anyway. Wonderful work with the channel!

    Frankenstein is probably one of my favourite classics! It's a little arduous to begin with, yes, but totally worth it. Though, I would highly recommend reading/reading up on John Milton's Paradise Lost if you were going to read it as there are so many references/nods to it. Those Romantics bloody worshipped Milton!

    Had the same problem with Frankenstein at first but then used an audio book. Reading along with the audio book really helped me get a feel for it and got me through the letters to the point that on rereading it I actually enjoy the letters. Definitely worth trying, the vocalisation really helps with the flow of the story and also makes you slow down and ponder on what's being said.

    I tried reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas when EVERYONE was raving about it but I just couldn't get into it at all.
    I agree with you on Divergent. I read the first 2 books in the series but I don't think I'll ever finish it. I also dropped the Delirium series after the first book. I'm very bad at continuing with series in general.
    A genre that absolutely doesn't faze me is Fantasy. I know, I know, everyone and their mother loves it but I just ... can't.
    I've started decluttering my (unread) books because I know I'll never read them and they just frustrate me whenever I look at them. Most of them I bought years and years ago when I was a lot younger and had different interests.

    I don't blame you for not wanting to read Frankenstein haha. It took me 8 months to get through it, certain moments in the book were fantastic, like the section where he observes the struggling family but for the most part, it dragged. I bought the graphic novel version from Burlington Books, I highly recommend this version, quick and to the point, you're done with the story in 20 minutes. The graphic novel version actually helped me to understand the original A LOT better.

    I usually wait until a series or trilogy is completely out before I dive into it- that way, if I absolutely love it, I can go right into the next one without waiting. I read ACOTAR just as the last one was being released- and now I'm halfway through ACOMAF and know I can jump into the last one at any time. Same thing with the Lunar Chronicles- I'm halfway through the series and loving it, and I know I can pick up Cress at any time. The downside is, you're not reading it when everyone else is. But that's never bothered me.

    2:02 - Ah, waiting. The comicbook trade reader's dilemma. I am well acquainted. And it is even more frustrating when the next volume is delayed, sometimes for months at a time (i.e., with Volume 2 of Bitch Planet). Then you are faced with jumping right in with what you remember from the previous volume, or being forced to go back and re-read to refresh your memory.

    I can't wait for series either! I always miss all the hype because I wait til the whole series is released. If not I have to start from the beginning every time just to refresh! It's so frustrating that sometimes a good story idea is stretched into a trilogy instead of just one strong book just cause that's trendy and sells more.
