Here’s some fun facts. - Though Sebastian talks with a Caribbean accent, he was originally gonna have a British accent. - Though Ursula looks like a octopus, in the early stages of animation, she was originally gonna look like either a lionfish or scorpionfish - The directors of this, John Musker and Ron Clements would later direct other Disney films like Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog and Moana.
Ah yes, the film that pulled Disney out of it's darkest era, and into a new age of greatness. There are just so many reasons to love this movie. The characters are all great, the animation and music are gorgeous, and the songs are next level Broadway style hits. "Part Of Your World" is just beautiful, "Under The Sea" is a massive bop, and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is still one of the best villain songs Disney has ever made.
Ursula is a Cecaelia, which are half-human, half-octopus. In the film, she was once a resident in the palace, possibly a royal magician of sorts until King Triton caught her using black magic and banished her. However, in the current license version of the stage musical and based on the deleted storyline for her, Ursula is the youngest of seven daughters. Her father was the sea god Poseidon, and she was always envious as he doted on the other daughters but not her. To ease his guilt for being an awful father to her, he gifted her a magic nautical shell. Ursula started using black magic with it to kill off her sisters to become the favorite. When that plan failed, she committed patricide, the act of killing ones’ own father; she then became the ruler of the entire ocean. However, she had a younger sibling, King Triton. When he became of age, he took back rule of the seas, the crown, and the trident. Then he banished her, and she swore revenge. It’s revealed the final confrontation that Ursula was responsible for the death of Ariel‘s mother. King Triton never knew because he assumed that humans killed her because she went for a swim one day and never came back. Ariel defeated her aunt by smashing her shell which acted as a life force to her. 🐙🐚🌊🪸💜🖤🩵💙
Yes! Great film, so amazing to see and hear. Ariel was always my favourite Disney princesses; sure she has flaws and makes poor choices but that is what makes her so much like a real human (er... merpersonish) teenager and more interesting than the super perfect Belle. I also love that she has a troubled relationship with her father and is fascinated and drawn to the human world long before she ever even sees Eric.
It's actually explained in the animated series why Sebastien has the Jamaican accent. It was said he was born in Jamaica and went to Music Academy in Trinidad prior to joining King Triton's staff as his assistant.
The Little Mermaid II: Return to The Sea is actually really good. I'd recommend it to answer a lot of your questions. it was a straight to DVD sequel but it was one of a very few Disney straight to DVD sequels that was actually decent. as for Ariel suddenly wanting to live her life as a human: that's not exactly true. she'd wanted to live in the human world all her life. that was her dream, not Eric. I mean, sure she saw Eric on the night of the storm and thought he was cute and rescued him, etc, but he's not the reason she wanted to become human. she had her grotto full of human stuff way before she knew Eric existed. when she sings "Part of Your World" she's singing about her desire of wanting to be human, not wanting to be with Eric, a human she's never met before. as for Eric, yeah he's a Chad and a himbo but we love him all the same haha plus, I think the reason Grimsby wanted him to get married was likely something to do with him being royalty and carrying on the royal line. most often, the ruling monarch is pressured to get married and have kids so the royal line can continue, especially back then. anyway, loved this reaction Eric! sorry for the long response haha ❤
Of course it was another classic, with great music and the right energy from the writers and animation, I always feel like this was the movie they decided they wanted to test out light refraction and shimmers, you see a fair bit of it, a lot of heavy but colourful shading as well. Though plotwise Ariel just needed a good lawyer, she's underage so contracts shouldn't be valid, that or Triton could just not be gung ho about hating humans and telling a teenager not to do something, like Ursula said it was indeed far too easy for her, or Ariel can just you know _write_ that she lost her voice, since she could sign her name!
The original fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen is very sad. Once the mermaid has legs every step she takes feels like walking on broken glass. She also dies and becomes foam on the surface of the water.
Lol that I love you Daddy joke you made was wild 😂😂 Thoroughly enjoyed this, and yeah Eric does seem much older than 18. Shorter lifespans so maybe both of them are basically middle aged 🥴
This movie has two direct to DVD sequels. Well, technically the second one is a prequel. Anyway, they're both... extremely mediocre. Although admittedly I have a lot of nostalgia for the first sequel, I watched it a lot when I was little. It focuses on Ariel's daughter having pretty much the opposite problem of wanting to be a mermaid instead of human, and if you want more characterization for Eric... too bad. He's actually even more of a blank slate in that one. The prequel gives more context to why Triton hates humans so much, but also shows that he used to be an even worse father (and king) than he was in this movie.
I saw both too, and I only preferred the prequel over the sequel. Even though I saw the sequel at a young age, I was extremely disappointed in it. I think it was my first dose of reality when it came to understanding cash grab films. The prequel is also a cash grab but it just reminded me of an elongated Little Mermaid series episodes.
26:28 I'm ashamed to say that I was initially part of that backlash against Halle Bailey. It was just because I feel like Ariel's appearance is part of what makes her so iconic. Eventually, I told myself that it'd be okay if Halle dyed her hair red, which she did. Sadly, it wasn't until I saw Halle in interviews promoting the movie that I realized that she is Ariel incarnate. Even though I never said anything malicious and I definitely never said anything directly to Halle (as in, I didn't tagged her in any tweets), I hate myself for doubting her and I am truly sorry. 😢
Hey Eric, I’d recommend you check out The Little Mermaid remake cause I enjoyed it so much I saw it in theaters twice. Plus I feel like it has enough changes to make it stand out from original.
This came out when I was eight she's always been the princess I relate to the most and I refuse to see the live-action remake because they changed everything I loved about her and the race swap for no f****** reason even though it would make no goddamn sense in that part of the world and that time frame but I would absolutely recommend the prequel which explains why Triton hates people and the sequel which shows Ariel and Eric's daughter Melody who is basically in the same situation as her mom she fantasizes about being the other species

One of my favourite movies as a kid in the early nineties, the music still gives me chills

Eric is a prince and thus needs an heir which comes with marriage apparently.

Me as a kid:
"Wow, she had such a cool collection!"
Me rewatching this a few years ago:
"Dang she's kinda like a hoarder"
Good things in life must come to an end.
@6:15 to 6:19 our reaction to the remake!

I so did not expect that to happen! Soon as he said that, I was like “Oh, my god!”
@@isaiahadams1996 yeah it caught me way off guard too, almost did a spit take lol
ursula's design was inspired by the iconic drag queen divine
Yes, there is a direct-to-video sequel, and yes, it is very bad.
Also, I always thought the story took place in the Caribbean.
It is very interesting to see your reaction to the films Robocop and Robocop 3. This is a cool classic 👍🔥
Les Poissons is still my favorite Disney song
Wow, I was gonna follow up your C-shells joke with an algae bra joke, but you went and made it yourself. XD I thought I invented that one.

i know this is about the little mermaid, but I just want to comment that I appreciate your shirt. As a Kelyeth fan, thats the true mvp redhead.

😂 🧜♀️ jokes FTW
Little mermaid has both a sequel AND a prequel. I don’t care much for either of them… (the prequel, especially bugs me)
Ariel is just a hormonal teenager.
The sequel are meh
This classic animated movie is still better than the new live action movie.
Ariel is still beautiful with red hair.

Don't watch the remake. Stick to the classics instead.
Don't tell him that. This remake is good.
The remake isn't bad by itself, but it's not great, either. And it doesn't really capture the magic of the original.
@@ZukoHalliwell No it isn't. It's objectively bad.
@@LordCommander-ui2fw Yes, the remake is horrible.
@@trashrat1234 None of the remakes are good. Except maybe Cinderella.
