Cop hijacks intercom at local Kmart for unexpected announcement

- AMMON - “Attention Kmart shoppers. This is the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office. If you would all please come to the front of the store.”
It’s not a message you typically want to hear while shopping, but on Thursday afternoon, dozens of Idaho Falls police officers, Idaho State Police troopers and Bonneville County Sheriff deputies surprised Kmart customers and employees with a special announcement.
“We have an awards presentation for some special people here. This is quite possibly the last and final blue light special here at Kmart,” Bonneville County Sheriff Sgt. Bryan Lovell said over the loud speaker.
As folks inside the store congregated near the front entrance, Lovell announced law enforcement personnel were there to thank employees for supporting the Shop with a Cop program over the last two decades.
Every December since 1993, children in need have spent a few hours on a Saturday morning shopping for clothes and Christmas toys with a police officer. Kmart hosted the event for 24 years, but in November the company announced the Ammon location would be permanently closing. Target will now host the annual event.
“Since this is their last year of being involved, we wanted to recognize and tell them thanks for taking hundreds and hundreds of kids through there every year,” Lovell told EastIdahoNews.com.
Melva Baledge, who recently retired from Kmart after 40 years, and two other employees were recognized with a plaque, pins and coffee mugs from the law enforcement agencies. Deputies walked around the store and gave the remaining employees doughnuts and treats.
“I’m just flabbergasted,” Baledge said after being honored. “It was officers who did most of the work. Some of the kids at the very beginning would be very shy but by the time it was over they were all over the place. It’s been really fun.”
It's Wild, we grew up in a tough life, and I remember being picked as a Child to go on a Shopping Spree with Officers at K-Mart. I remember all other kids were buying Bikes and such, and I was buying School Clothes 2 sizes too big, so I could grow into them. My Mother, raised 4 kids by herself, worked her tail off. Now here I am, 20+ years later, as a respectable human being, sad to see this tradition fade. It taught me much more than I had ever known, moments like this can make a huge impact on someone, many which will be discovered later in life. Love our Police.
Some stores were there for over 40 years and left many good shopping memories. They're about all gone now. It was good while it lasted.
Kmart....has been a part of our lives for so long. It's hard to see stores closing! We all grew up with a BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL!

I remember when Kmart opened a store in my hometown in the early 1970's. It was a huge deal back then when that store opened in our small town because it seemed like you could buy most everything at just one store, which was unheard of at the time, by us anyway. Back then we had ONE movie theater in the whole county that showed ONE movie at a time and everything was closed on Sundays but when Kmart came to town it was open 7 days a week! 20 years later that same store would close for good and we were sad to see it go.
It changed the course of shopping as many others would soon follow.
My first kiss was inside a Kmart. Lol how time flies.
It has been an honor working for Kmart and we thank you all!
This one of the reasons why Kmart was so special. They were a piece of Americana. I am so sad we lost this special time and place. I have fond memories of Kmart. They helped me get back to working back in the early 2000s. They gave me the confidence to go back to the work. They truly was a good neighbor.

This was a Great program for the kids and the police and employees that went 2 local kmart my former local kmart did shop with a cop for years before it went out . I even was in this program when i was in highschool. Sadly it wont b at no more kmarts ... R.i.p. Kmart 2018
I remember when I was younger, there was a drawing for mothers day and I went up and drew the ticket and it was my moms ticket that I drew. One of the best memories I have of Kmart.

I used to work for Kmart in Elkview Wv for 22 1/2 years until I was laid off in February 2017 due to the bridge being washed out.

Wal-Mart's should be illegal. They put more small businesses closed. Now they are sky high prices and have as few employees as possible.
I also used to work at Kmart too from 2005. Until 2017 at Clearview Elmwood shopping center near harahan Louisiana

We need to step up as Americans and do our part to keep Kmart open there's no reason why we have to let Walmart shut them down or any other store we depend on Walmart too much it's time to start depending on the original stores that kept us alive Through The Years Sears Kmart JCPenney Montgomery Wards Albertsons Safeway we have to do what we can to keep the stores open don't let them shut down
lee tijerina kmart is overpriced China made crap. I do not like Walmart either but it has been proven that their “special” items are marked up to make it look like a deal. I’m happy to see kmart go out of business.

I want Kmart to remain open and to thrive as i am sad to see all of the Stores i have went to close but the fact of reality is Kmart is dying because of Corporate decisions and the use of Private equity specifically how Eddie Lampart bought Kmart, bought Sears and merged the 2 and have been pocketing the profits (and assets) into hundreds of millions of themselves while keeping the Stores the same way (Kmart Stores are like being in 1997 for the most part).

Walmart is not being currently run by Private equity who wants to sell all of their assets (despite how greedy the Waltons Family is).

The best we can do at this point is document the Stores and save whatever possible to remember them by as despite Kmarts dying another day they are still on the path to die (meaning Eddy bought them a few years at most unless the Company is forced to be sold to someone else and makes some unlikely comeback.).

I'm Canadian. Kmart was big here too. I loved it and so did my parents. I remember being one of those children that always had to run away from my parents because I had to see all of the toys and then got lost. I never listened to my parents in that store. They Nick named me Brett the brat because I always had to get in a mess. Lol.
When i went to Kmart as a baby/kid that blue light special scares the heck outta me. That scare is gonna become part of my great childhoods

It's sad because they're standing in what was the K Cafe at that store, but it's heartbreaking to see that this store (and probably every other one) is closing.

You really don't see any sort of connection communities had with big box retailers the way that Kmart has. It wasn't just a place to shop like Walmart and Target is now, it was thee place to shop with something exciting going on every now and again. It's really sad to see such a company with such a wholesome legacy go down under.

So sad to see Kmart fail like this kmart was a wonderful store to shop at along with the community service the Kmart put on like shop with a cop it's not just a store it's a community it is a life line to the less fortunate family's its hard to say good bye to a chain that you grew up with kmart is where my first tv came from and I am super thankful for all the memories I have of kmart and many other store chains I grew up as a kid now most of them are gone for good like blockbuster , toys r us , and many others.

My Daughter in law just lost her job this month at Kmart after 18 year's because her store closed and her and my Son have 3 children. So sad to see so many in my area now without jobs after many year's of loyal service 😢
This is a GREAT IDEA THAT NEEDS to go nationwide. It will help show kids that the police are not bad.
My mom still works for Kmart in California for 29 will be 30 years later this year . Luckily the one she is at is still open. I've known Kmart my whole life way before Wal-Mart.

K mart was going under long before Amazon came around. Blame sears for the loss of K mart, Sears was trying to buy up every thing but spent money the didn't have. I hate Amazon they will end up like sears in the end.
Actually it was Sears mismanagement that killed Kmart.
Amazon seems to be doing it right. Sears spent too much way too quickly, and they spent cash and stock. It was easy for them to get upside-down.
I see few here that don't even know what was the real story, it was K Mart that filed chapter 11 and took down a bunch of companies with it like Fleming, after that they sold their buildings and rented them from the new buyers, with all that cash on hand they went and bought Sears in 2004, it was K Mart that took down both. go ahead and look it up. K Mart did not see how fast Wal Mart was growing, so they went down fast, Amazon is taking Wal Mart down.

I live in Michigan as a kid in high school we had a field trip to the K-mart head quarters I have to say it was the most boring field trip ever sorry K-mart.
