Only in California...the most diverse state and best place in the world. The world and everyone else in the US should learn how to accept diversity and live peacefully with one another as CA does. It'll make people less ignorant and accepting of cultural differences.
This is so wholesome. I have NEVER seen a case like this before where a community was this determined to support a family that needed help. I wish I could buy his doughnuts.
There is absolutely nothing negative in this story, yet people disliked it and that makes me feel sick. This is a good man who stayed by his wife who has suffered! Truly beautiful to see a man standing by his wife in this day and age.
I didn't dislike it, but it's gross how the news anchors immediately turned it political by calling it a refugee story. It has nothing to do with a refugee, it has to do with a community coming together to help a man and his wife, nothing else!
Imagine if it were like that in every city town in the world. We would be civilized as a world. There would be no or less judgment of people and the color of ones skin wouldn't matter. And everybody lives would matter.

FOTOJADAMO So you think people that earned good money and are striving for more are greedy?.. Money is money and if you want to continue your business you need to be at your best the money you’ll earn isn’t going to last forever.

I completely agree with you but in reality if you read the comments section on a majority of these videos it creates a pretty good divide. Best option in cases like this are to disable comments so people can take the story for what it is
Idk about that maybe after you get citizenship or at least a green card. My girlfriend is living here in the US on a visa but she'd never call herself American and I wouldn't either.

This man and his wife are a true role model for the American dream: refusing to take the easy money from others, and choosing to work for it and earn it, and not only they made it happen, they inspired thousands with their values. Respect!
there’s also something to be said about that very mindset. while it’s sweet that this man is choosing to work for his money, handouts where handouts are needed is not something that should be looked down upon. even if he decided to accept the community’s offer of a gofundme, i certainly wouldn’t respect him any less. i would actually find it super sweet the community’s eagerness to help him out in his time of need. we really need to stop putting so much emphasis in a persons value being how much labor they contribute.
@@theegote as someone with the problem you’re talking about I can see where you’re coming from. My family has a little bit of a problem when it comes to accepting money from others, and this includes me. It’s not that we feel we have to work for it, we just feel like if I can earn it myself then you should keep your money and use it on you and not me.
And remember, in asia we often thinks "there's someone else more deserving of the help" mindset and will felt immense guilt if we taken it, if ourselves still have the ability to get by. Those principles at least, still tought by my parents "dont robs someone else fortune and help".
@@nfspbarrister5681 And man I share that mindset when someone gives me money when I need money. It just makes me feel horrible. Like, I want to work on getting it on my own. And there is also how everyone needs their own money for their own needs whether that is nourishment or the like.

I'd have to say our last mass shooting is not a terrorism issue. It's something that this country hasn't seemed to take seriously up until now. Domestic terrorism is our largest threat regarding terrorism but mental illness and broken vets who seek help shouldn't be turned away. How many times are we going to allow sick people to LEAGALLY acquire firearms. And how long are we going to ignore mental illness in our inner cities. This wonderful story helps but knowing that politics is going to push our societies true issues into the background is very sad to watch.
im telling you, those who have felt hardship will know how to appreciate help and will never accept hand out. its the same for those refuge, its the same as every refuge. people like miller and trump just doesnt understand that
It is rare for me to shed a tear, but this one broke me. News media, please spend as much time every day on positive as you do on the negative. That will shape our minds as we go about our own days, to find the good, and share it with others.
I love this story. The owner is definitely traditional Asian. In several of the Asian cultures, tips and other charitable offerings are as good as an insult. If they can't straight-up earn their keep by hard work, they won't accept it.
Uhh not true. + Tips just don't exist in other countries besides the US because US workers aren't paid enough. If you try to tip someone in any normal country they'd be like "??? No". Also "that culture"?? 👀
There's MANY different Asian cultures because it's a whole diverse continent! The cultures in Iran are going to be different than the cultures in Tibet or Sri Lanka. You can't paint them with a broad brush with the false notion that helping others or being helped is an insult. The most common religions in the Asian continent are Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. One of the most important aspects in each of these religions is charity and generosity. Dāna in Buddhism and Hinduism, and Zakat in Islam, one of the five pillars. And then there's Confucius. "If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else." "Charity, like the sun, brightens every object on which it shines." John Chhan knew he could earn enough with his job to afford everything so he as an individual decided to decline the offer and keep working. The money could go to people unable to do that. That's it. It's not a reflection of "the culture". Plus they're Cambodian so there's a 95% chance they're Buddhist themselves.

But, I highly doubt the story would be any less great and people would be any less supportive if he did indeed take the handouts. However, like I said I see where you’re coming from. My family has a little bit of a problem when it comes to accepting money from others, and this includes me. It’s not that we feel we have to work for it, we just feel like if I can earn it myself then you should keep your money and use it on you and not me.
if you work hard to stay in business for decades, you have saved up alot of good karma, which would be proven
And there is also how everyone needs their own money for their own needs whether that is nourishment or the like.

wanderlustdance many Cambodians and other asians are extremely prideful. Saving face is very important. That's probably why he said that
blahblahblah quite possible actually. pride is quite a huge thing especially in SEA cultures. but I guess it's a mix of "I don't need help because I can manage on my own" and "I don't want to trouble others" imo. nonetheless, it definitely is a sign of modesty and humbleness.

We need more of these stories and less negative ones especially with all the political dramas and domestic terrorism going on around.

I love this story. The owner is definitely traditional Asian. In several of the Asian cultures, tips and other charitable offerings are as good as an insult. If they can't straight-up earn their keep by hard work, they won't accept it.
I didn't know that...
I saw that immediately as well. I definitely agree.
If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else."
"Charity, like the sun, brightens every object on which it shines."
John Chhan knew he could earn enough with his job to afford everything so he as an individual decided to decline the offer and keep working. The money could go to people unable to do that. That's it. It's not a reflection of "the culture". Plus they're Cambodian so there's a 95% chance they're Buddhist themselves.
@@MikkiManson13 That is not correct. The US is not the only country that tips, it is however much more prevalent here than in all other countries. Besides, I have over 100 likes from people who agree, and a confirmation comment from a genuine Asian (Taiwan).
