TO BE FAIR-- this song has a good 8 years on magenta mountain. You're still sometimes looking at their discography like it all came out at once, but this album is 10 years old now ;p
Joey’s solos on this song always make me want to rip out a solo as well haha. It’s pretty easy to do if you look the main chords being played during the solo. It’s just Fm Gm A B
Fun fact this is a Joey song. They wanted to make a slow song since all the other music before this was very fast and loud. Got to the part where you realized it was Joey haha. The bonnaroo version is the vibe for sure
ahahaha this is such a funny one! felt the same about the studio version when i first heard it, like huh?? this is their most played song? like it's good but compared to their overall work? but yeah they make it into a killer live song
I love this song so much. I went into King Gizzard's discography in chronological order, and I'd only heard a couple songs beforehand, Rattlesnake, Magenta Mountain, Mars For The Rich and Crumbling Castle, but that was before I was into metal or prog, so Mars and CC weren't the biggest for me, Rattlesnake was my favorite. Since I had heard so little at the time, I hadn't really heard what they could do, and if I did I didn't really realise yet. So once I got to this song, it was an instant favorite. I thought it was the most beautiful thing, and once I had heard that the live versions blow the studio version out of the water I avoided them like the plague in feat that they would ruin the song for me. Luckily that didn't happen, and I still love the original. I really enjoy lofi music because of the textures it can provide. It can just make things sound completely different from hifi music. That being said, I like noise for the same reason, I just like the textures it brings to the table that I wouldn't hear elsewhere. Next up is ABABCd, an interlude and another Joey song that he wrote for a music webshow of the same name. After that is Sleepwalker, another very nice song. Just a heads-up for that one, the studio version has a small section that might make you think your headphones are broken. And I agree that I'd assume Magenta Mountain would be their most streamed song, if not Rattlesnake since that's (from what I remember) their most viewed on TH-cam.
@meramsey This is the only comment I see any time this song comes up. This song is actually good. It's way more chill and accessible than anything on Rat's Nest or Mind Fuzz which the collective fandom basically sucks off on a daily basis. It's a nice intro to Gizz for the common folk. It's not better than Garden Goblin tho.
awesome hearing your perspective on these guys with ur background. brussels is the the true version of this song forever and always but everything they do rips always. Keep up the passion for music always🫵
i love this song so much but the studio pales in comparison to how they play it live. you should definitely check out when they played it in newport this year on ur own time. it was probably the best live performance imo. joey does a fucking scat solo that just fucking rips, and then they bring the jam straight into iron lung which was also fucking stellar.
I would have thought magenta mountain would be most popular also, but this song was released a lot earlier so it had a big head start. Maybe magenta will catch up eventually
I'm with you on the studio production but the melody of this song is so good I doesn't mind it that much as with Stressing. In their older songs it's pretty difficult to tell Joey apart from Stu if you don't already know so don't worry.
For me this wonkiness feels like olden times. Like this was recorded in the 50s 60s. And I think it fits this song so well. It's a bit weird at first but I got used to it.
In terms of popualr songs, Pop in my step was on an advert here in Australia and its got a feel to it that could make it very popular with the masses as a bop. I would jave Kepler 22b up there personally

i've cried real ass tears to this song man

Wait what was Stu’s slow song assuming ambys was let me mend the past
@@chimnyswift10 I would say honey or the slow jams
@@bitterbum1 definitely not honey this was years before they even released flying microtonal banana I was thinking stressin or sleepwalker
@@chimnyswift10 Stressin.
From their website:
"Work This Time and Stressin' were Joey and I trying to record soulful music"
Yess!! i have waited for this moment for sooo long
Im glad you watched the bonnaroo version
yep its the best solo in my opinion
Oh yeah baby, this means the best song is next!
He's already done Vegemite
Red Rocks 22 version, you’re welcome in advance
That solo 😭
All Gizzard sounds better live. Seen em 9 times, and they get better with each show/tour. Live, they are so good live.
IT DOES SOUND LIKE STU!

Only reason this is the most streamed song is because it got included in a playlist that was real popular.
Hah and right after I submit that comment you brought that up

Check out one of the 2024 tour versions. They do another variation of it.
love the one in newport, the ending and transition into iron lung is incredible

It’s funny bc the studio version is so popular on Spotify but ask pretty much any gizz fan and they’ll tell you they prefer the live version
This is pretty much a Pod-era Ween song.
A lot of their old albums are recorded on tape, sometimes vhs tape. They definitely wanted an old warbled tape feel on this album.
I'd say that's why it's so streamed, the lo-fi vaporwave wave.
I would have thought magenta mountain would be most popular also, but this song was released a lot earlier so it had a big head start. Maybe magenta will catch up eventually
yeah joey really only started developing a unique voice aside from stu around 2022 for me tbh
Yeah I vastly prefer the live versions too
i prefer the red rocks 22’ solo technically but damn if this one aint great too

You gotta check out the Rimlicker Farms “Work This Time”, best solo for this song but I’m a bit biased cuz I was at that show lol

easily one of his best if not his best solos, there was a work this time set last year that was somehow better than this but i forgot which one
The remlinger 2023 and red rocks 2022 are both better
