Love Newton Stewart when I was a kid in the 70s holidayed there great cinema and an Italian cafe at the west side of the Cree Bridge. The Mills near the prison and the massive walk up Corsbie Road to the football ground. Drive down to Whithorn and up to Glen Trol and climb the Merrick. The drive east to Dumfries is so scenic you have to keep stopping just to gawp. Happy days now live in London would swap right now to live in NS.
@andrewsmith-cm9qw so glad you have such happy memories of NS! Hope you might check out more of our D&G and Scotland videos! You might enjoy them, too! Thanks for watching!
I’m trying to trace the history of the Rennie family who came from Newton Stewart. My grandfather was Robert Vance Rennie and he was born probably in the 1870/80’s. He went to South Africa around the turn of the century. I think he fought for a Scottish regiment during the Boer War. After the war ended he was demobbed and returned to South Africa to live. There he met my grandmother. They both passed away in South Africa in 1957.
Thanks for watching! A fascinating story. Really hope you have success in finding out about your ancestry. Have you contacted the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh?
And for some evening entertainment you could try The Vault. They've got some fantastic live bands playing there. It's in Victoria Street ("The High Street"). You pass it in the video. You went past The Beltie (The Belted Galloway) it's right off the car park. I'm surprised you didn't see it.. Foods excellent! You also went straight past The River Bank cafe. It was just there to the right when you went back to the car park. Oh well, For next time perhaps. "Haste ye back".
Ah the joys of visiting mid week before Easter... everything was closed :( We love D&G so we definitely be back! Do subscribe as we're currently sharing our latest trip to Scotland and we've just booked our 2024 holiday too!
There’s a book about the 12 Earl of Galloway called The Unlikely Countess by Louise Carpenter it’s a fascinating and tragic read I recommend it to anyone interested in the human mind and relationships in family.
There are plenty of places to eat in Newton Stewart. You walked passed several - The Galloway Hotel, Brew Ha Ha, The River Bank Restaurant, The Belted Galloway Visitor Centre, last 2 close to your car.
