    it is incredible the amount of patience that it must require to shape wood into such beautiful musical instruments.....i watch these videos with the hope that they will help me increase my level of patience so i will be better in my own woodworking...

    This is a beautiful technique. I will have to try it. I can watch these videos for hours, They are marvelous works of art in their own right.

    It actually saves the body of the instrument from cracking all the way up if you hit the edge of it. Also it's pretty decorative. + if you check it out, you can see that most of student instruments have this inlayed stripe just painted on them - so it's also an unofficial quality indicator. For me at least.

    A very challenging , but very necessary task , Purfling almost stopped me from continuing the build of the instrument... I ruined a top

    Wow - I can't believe you made purfling! Nice work! How did you plane the wood to be so thin? Did you plane it or somehow shear/slice it? Are the three veneers laminated with hide glue?

    -What did you use to stain the outer layer black?
    - Also, is there a special process to get an even penetration of colour, or is it so thin that the dye simply soaks through?
