  • TEQ Customs make LED Retrofit headlights for Gen 1 Tacomas (and more) that are way brighter than stock. We decided to try them out on our 2003 Tacoma and walk you through the install step-by-step. @teqcustoms6942 Read the step-by-step directions at our website: thetacomaguy.c...
    Tools Required:
Ratchet: 10mm socket for the nuts and bolts that hold the lights.
Small Flat Screwdriver: to push down the tabs on the grille.
Philips Screwdriver: To remove the grille screws on the sides.
    Wire Cutter / Stripper: amzn.to/42UiI1a
For the turn signal wires. This Klein tool my favorite.
Crimp tool: To secure the butt connectors. I use a cheap one like this, but there are nicer ones out there. amzn.to/3uPcNhc
    Plastic Body Tools: amzn.to/3Inha69
A nylon trim kit will help you get lower headlight molding trim off without ruining the paint.
    Heat gun: amzn.to/3SWApsr
To melt the heat shrink tubing around the butt connectors.
Pliers: To squeeze the wire splice connectors closed.
Steel wool pad: Or something else to remove a little bit of paint around a fender bolt to make a good ground connection for one of the wiring harnesses.
    Parts Required:
In addition to the light kit itself, there are a few items you’ll need to pickup to complete the installation not provided in the TEQ Customs kit. Good news is all this stuff is cheap and you’ll wind up with plenty left over for the next job.
18 Gauge Silicone Wire (Yellow): amzn.to/49ThjKG
To extend the wire of the turn signal wires coming from the RGB module in the TEQ kit. Not sure why they didn’t include this in the box, you can’t finish the install without it.
Low Voltage Wire splice connectors: amzn.to/3IhDLRN
    Makes tapping wires a breeze.
18-22 AWG Red Electrical Butt Wire Connectors: amzn.to/4bWXymY
    You’ll only need 2.
3/8 In. X 10 Ft. Black Flex Split Wire Conduit: amzn.to/3Th1MPk
Wrap your cables in this to prevent rubbing and potential electrical shorts if the wires get cut.
XFasten Wire Harness Tape 3/4 Inch x 50ft Cloth Tape: amzn.to/4bOg9lr
    To close up the conduit.
Grille Clips Retainers - Set of 10: amzn.to/3P1iYFJ
I broke nearly every retention clip holding the grille to the truck when trying to put it back on. Over time these clips get old. For $6 you get a whole new set and save yourself the headache of trying to zip tie the grille on when you are done.

Could I apply this for my 2000 4Runner?

Check with the folks at TEQ, but I'm pretty sure they make 4R lights

How many feet do the upgraded headlights, on low beam, project onto the road? I understand these headlights only project out further and are not brighter in high beam mode. Is that true? What do you light and not like about the headlights? Thank you.

The difference between these and stock is huge. They are almost too bright! Major upgrade for sure. The light is whiter than the stock yellow bulbs.
The high beams are very centered and they shoot far far off into the distance. I like them. Could they be a little more dispersed like i have in my other vehicles, yes but these are designed to shoot down the trail so i think the tradeoff is distance vs spread, which in our case is fine.
The light cutoff is very dramatic on low beams, and they do project a sort of odd, uneven light pattern along the top but I'll take it due to the huge increase in light output - i got these mainly to keep the wife safe at night when she'd driving the truck - to be seen and to see better, and to that end i would say mission accomplished.
There is a lot of wiring that comes along with the lights, and I question some of the long term viability and waterproofing of the connections over time, thats my one major concern with this upgrade since the engine bay gets pretty wet when it rains.

I want to say between 2 or 3 months from the time I ordered it until it arrived.

No way I'm hacking up my 20 year old wiring harness

You don't hack up the wiring harness. Its all plug and play. Worst thing you are doing is tapping wires.
