Nice interview. I am a farmer in Europe. But no matter where we live, we all talk "hay, water, and pasture" all the time. I feel like I can just sit with Cy Swan and talk like old friends. So much is common when raising cattle and horses.
Love the sit downs with Cy. He represents all the things that forged this country, with a sly wit as well.... "so I figured the cow didn't need to be in the barn anymore" LOL.... one dislocated shoulder, a trampling and a dragging later. His understatedness used to be more common, and represented the "listen" part of listening to elders. They knew what they said was only applicable to the willing, That the deaf ears (minds really) would have to learn it another time or way. I've known several Cy's, all lost to time, and it amazes me to think how much of them and their decades old lessons remain with me all these years later. This video couldn’t have been posted at a more profound time for me. I’ve been dieting for a little over a month. Low fat, low carb, high protein. A lot of meat… beef (which I raised last year), turkey, chicken, fish (walleye and crappie from the freezer), etc. What few carbohydrates I’ve been eating come from a small amount of white rice every day. I’ve lost 20 pounds thus far, and let me assure what he’s saying about “not being hungry” is VERY true. It didn’t take long before I found myself forgetting to eat, whereas before it was like I had food on my mind all day every day. Stepping away from enriched white flour and all these other processed grains and eating cleaner stuff… man it’s like it resets your hunger meter. The bar of being hungry gets raised way way up. Great content guys, thanks!
You should consider having some sweet potatos in lieu of the rice. I'm not into buzz words but "super food" is about the best term to describe yams. They are the perfect food for humans 😁
Very interesting content. I changed my diet to a keto diet about a year ago and everything this man says is true. I used to eat none stop, constant headaches and my body ached. No more headaches, I only eat twice a day and my joints feel much better. I always worked out and tried to stay fit but my mid section was alway soft. I lost about 28 pounds and four inches off my waste. I finally have the lean much more chiseled body I had always been chasing. My wife was skeptical at first but she too is getting off the carbs. Life changing. Grass fed cost more but I my body is worth it. Same with eggs, butter and only wild caught salmon. Great video thanks so much, it explained a lot of things I did not know.
If I had one wish, it would be for Cy Swan to live forever, and share his uncountable and immeasurable wealth of knowledge with any and all. Thanky sir, and thank you all at EC!

From my own experience I can confirm that on low carb eating habits, the "hunger" goes away. I totally understand what Cy is saying ... that on low carb, there is no longer that really (uncontrollable) hunger anymore. I still enjoy eating (one of my favorite things to do) .. I just cut down on obvious carb like bread or rice. I actually like eating (mostly raw) vegetables now.
Correct, eat bacon and eggs, steak, cheese, green veggies etc, stay away from bread, sugar, starches like rice and potatoes and you will lose weight and not be hungry. At least not where you just have to stop and eat.

You guys really produce some nice content. Lots of information on simple, everyday topics about how people use their hands to do something useful and necessary for life. These skills and crafts you're showing aren't new and just discovered, but starting to become a forgotten bit of knowledge against the tide of smartphones and superstores. Thanks so much, and keep up the good work. :)
At 55 yrs old I find myself eating less and fewer carbs in my diet, Cy is right. Lean and a bit hungry snack on seeds and fruit add yogurt and vegetables to the diet. Two meals a day and I weigh 175 at 5' 10" not bad. Eat right and exercise is simple but no one seems to do so.
These comments express it in droves already, but figured one more is good for the algorithm. Cy is a legend. So glad you guys are getting at least a small percentage of his wisdom and knowledge (and humor) on camera to be viewed by others for generations.
While this subject matter isn't what initially attracted me to Essential Craftsman, it's one of the best episodes ever. It resonated for me because I've been keto for more than 20 years, and also was formerly in the cow business. Every time I hear Cy talk, I'm impressed by his wisdom and knowledge. Great job Nate!
He's right about cutting out carbs. Once you cut it all out, it's exactly like he said. You don't need to eat more that twice a day and sometimes once if you aren't doing much physical activity. I dropped weight fast and felt so much better after I cut out carbs.
I could listen to these men talk for hours. So much knowledge, wisdom and experience that can be passed on. I really appreciate this content and wish more of these wisemen were interviewed/gave master classes etc. Imagine being with a working blacksmith, farrier, butcher, carpenter, doctor, herbalist, etc for a month…..and just learning
My first time buying feeder calves, i built a 5 strand electric barbed wire fence.... i bought 4 calves at auction near the middle of March. when i let them out of the trailer, they ran right through the fence at full speed. I tried for weeks to get them back in, but they spent the summer roaming with a neighbors herd. They came in the week before labor day and i sold them the next day. They put on an average of 80lbs and i made a good profit not including the fence materials. Beef prices had gone way up during the summer due to low grain yields the previous fall.
I've been on a low carb diet since December. Went from almost 300lbs to 190lbs. We eat our own corn finished beef, hogs and chickens/eggs. Takes awhile to make the adjustments from carb diet to no carb or low carb. Finding new recipes that taste good and work is one of the biggest challenges. Love the things you guys are doing!

Really great to hear someone being truthfully about diet and the food pyramid. Government has not had our best interest in mind glad someone telling the truth.
Cy speaks the truth... 6 months ago I cut fast food, carbs and grains, increased vegetables just to be healthier. Ended up losing belly fat even though I was still eating way too much sugar. So I cut the sugar comsumption too because the craving were less and I knew it was healthier. Lost a little more weight and am seldom hungry. I'm far from a keto purist, just using some of the basic ideas from a keto/low carb diet... Good luck to all!
Love listening to you cy the only bread i eat is what my wife makes shes got a sourdough starter thats a couple years old i eat alot of eggs and i raise meat chickens in the backyard i have a family friend up the road that sells us a half a cow every now and then its nice to know where your food comes from
I'm a firm believer in eating the way that works best for your body. (My own mum can't do most meats, but is fine with bread, rice, potatoes, oatmeal, etc., whereas I have to avoid going over 30 grams of carbohydrates a day. Keto seems to be a fad right now, but I hope people who need it take it seriously as a lifestyle choice. For the past 5 years now, I've had to adhere to the dietary guidelines due to psoriatic arthritis. (Going over a certain amount of carbohydrates causes inflammation to get worse in my case.) The weight loss was an added bonus, and the not feeling hungry all of the time is a right blessing. Now I focus on getting good quality meats and fats and cramming as much nutrition and fiber into the carbs that I do eat. P.S. Does it ever irritate anyone else when people say "I'm going on a diet?" No, you're altering your diet to become healthy. If a change is not permanent, the results won't be either.(mini rant over.)
Yep -- it's hard to overestimate the real facts about nutrition which you can verify (as compared to expert opinion) when your own life depends on it! Eating grass-fed 80/20 ground beef has spoiled me for grain-fed equivalents -- I don't know if the omega-6s get rancid quicker or if these products are stored longer and/or warmer. The butter fix for leaner cuts works quite well, too. Only food more nutritious than grass-fed ruminants, at least from a protein-availability standpoint, is eggs from pastured hens. Also packed with fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. And Nate, after a brunch of steak and 5-6 eggs, you'll forget about snacking for hours and hours.
Great interview. My ears really perked up to hear what Cy eats. A man of his age working his tail off like he does- I want to know what keeps him going. I don’t recall hearing that Cy is a Marine. Semper Fi Leatherneck! No wonder Cy is as tough as nails!
He keeps going too. He doesn’t sit around and do nothing. That’s why so many older people fall apart as they age. They sit around more and more and do less and less while their bodies deteriorate. They say they hurt too much to do anything. So does everyone else but we keep going.
This amazing guy has lived out my dream life. I want to raise cattle just like he has done and have my own supply of beef. Carnivore diet is the definitely the way to go
I've lost 40+ pounds since I started a Meat and Salad diet since 10/2020. Yes, I shop all of the sales and eat a lot of chuck steaks and sirloin tip roasts.
I've been watching EC for many years, and about a week ago, I switched to what is basically Cy's Diet... VERY little carbs, very little sugars. I'm down about 6lbs in a week, but I've also been lifting so It's all fat losses... Carbs make me so hungry... so funny that this video came out now...

(approx 3 years) and am on a truck load of medication for many health issues,
So far my diet and diabetes seem to be coping with each other well!
Anyway, I appreciate the effort you put in to the videos Nate and a huge thank you to Cy for his wisdom.

The wisdom of the ages. Awesome, Nate. Thank you. They don't make 'em like that any more.
Low carb, low sugar always striving toward full keto. Have noticed great health benefits. Thanks for the content, was surprised to see this on your channel.
Excellent. Thanks for sharing this outstanding individual with again. I wish I lived in the area and could learn more of lifes lessons from both of you.
Man what a great conversation, the way he explained fattening steers on grain, and then as humans we do the same thing, its obvious but not thought of the same way. Food pyramid needs an adjustment!
You guys really produce some nice content. Lots of information on simple, everyday topics about how people use their hands to do something useful and necessary for life. These skills and crafts you're showing aren't new and just discovered, but starting to become a forgotten bit of knowledge against the tide of smartphones and superstores. I'm so happy to see you presenting these foundational skills to the world, and in the process inspiring people to consider real, rewarding lifestyle changes that will in effect benefit us all.
Mr Cy is a smart man
Yeah, that was pleasant!!! Thank you Cy, and thank you Nate!
Thanks!
You got to love a good story from Cy!
Nice episode and interview…thx…to both of you…
We need more videos with this man's life story. Has alot of interesting experiences
He's right about cutting out carbs. Once you cut it all out, it's exactly like he said. You don't need to eat more that twice a day and sometimes once if you aren't doing much physical activity. I dropped weight fast and felt so much better after I cut out carbs.
Such a Wealth of Knowledge. Great man. Thank you 🙏
I could listen to these men talk for hours.
Good stuff, I always enjoy listening to Cy!
One of the all time great EC videos
Got any favorites?
@@ZachAshcraft When you want something crunchy, and you're tired of pork rinds, nuke some pepperoni on a paper towel for 45 seconds in the microwave. You're welcome!
Cy Swan the GOAT
Really great to hear someone being truthfully about diet and the food pyramid. Government has not had our best interest in mind glad someone telling the truth.
Mr. Swan, not only walking the walk but talking the talk. His vigor is a sign that his diet is working for him.
So true! Thanks!
One of the best life story I've ever heard.
Marvellous lifestyle.
Good interviewer too.
One of the best videos on this channel
Cy speaks the truth... 6 months ago I cut fast food, carbs and grains, increased vegetables just to be healthier. Ended up losing belly fat even though I was still eating way too much sugar. So I cut the sugar comsumption too because the craving were less and I knew it was healthier. Lost a little more weight and am seldom hungry. I'm far from a keto purist, just using some of the basic ideas from a keto/low carb diet... Good luck to all!
fabulous conversation
Love listening to you cy the only bread i eat is what my wife makes shes got a sourdough starter thats a couple years old i eat alot of eggs and i raise meat chickens in the backyard i have a family friend up the road that sells us a half a cow every now and then its nice to know where your food comes from
Wisdom must be earned!
I love Cy !
If anyone is worthy to write a book on a 'satisfactory life' surely it has to be Cy Swan.
Give it 90 days, Nate. Changed my life. Lost 55lbs and my blood sugars are perfect. All my joint pain is gone.
Great interview. My ears really perked up to hear what Cy eats. A man of his age working his tail off like he does- I want to know what keeps him going.
I don’t recall hearing that Cy is a Marine. Semper Fi Leatherneck! No wonder Cy is as tough as nails!
The Marines didn't make him tough. He made the Marines tough.
He keeps going too. He doesn’t sit around and do nothing. That’s why so many older people fall apart as they age. They sit around more and more and do less and less while their bodies deteriorate. They say they hurt too much to do anything. So does everyone else but we keep going.
Cy is a remarkably disciplined and intelligent person.
Cy should make new food pyramid. Hes a genius
