I trained with him in iowa i 100% agree hes the nicest guy hes a funny guy too also i never knew how big he was until we were face to face very intimidating
Man, you can just hear how much experience Dean has. Everything he says, he gives you a reason and explains in full. Thanks so much for these videos Dean, I'm going to order your DVD!
The detail he teaches about foot placement around 5:30 regarding how you can set yourself up for a heelhook is something I only recently discovered and I'm a brown belt. I've always learned to leave the foot like he said until within the past year when another brown belt caught me in that self inflicted heel hook that he described. I consider the straight ankle lock one of my top 5, if not my number 1 sub, but just this year I learned I was making a big mistake from one of my training partners and now having that confirmed from Dean. Very good tip.
we train arm bars a zillion times more than any leg/angle/foot locks. yet out of the few years of sparring, i have only been able to place maybe 4-5 arm bars and maybe 3 being successful, where I win with a foot/leg lock probably 20-30% of the time i spar.. people are well aware of the famous arm bar and just for that reason alone, it is hard as hell to sneak it in. And on a similar note, leg/ankle locks are not 'famous' or practiced often, so sneaking one in is much easier. People often think their legs are big and strong, so they arent afraid when you grab hold of it... oh boy are they wrong.
It's not just the arms, it's not just the hips...it's all the things in the middle... this video just keeps getting better and better longer I train jiu jitsu.....thank you oss
Went to a Dean Lister seminar when he was here in Australia. Super nice guy. He was an "open book" with his information and what he taught. I went away from that seminar having a lot of respect for him. Someone has to interview him and ask him what he thinks about the latest leg lock craze spreading like wildfire due to the success of the DDS guys'. Would love to hear his thoughts on this from the original leg lock Tsar himself!
Dean is amazing teacher. He breaks down little nuances that make huge difference. Ill get that guy tomorrow. I see what I was doing wrong now. Thanx a million
Dean does very in depth videos with a lot of information like the history, rules, dangers, ect. of the topic he is covering. He is a great teacher in that he doesn't skip things that a lot of teachers take for granted in knowing.
Thanks for breaking it down as you did- a lot of the details you have gone over in seminars get fuzzy- this month's curriculum (At Alliance Eastlake) is all about legs and feet- so I immediately came to your channel to brush up on the basics!
Please spend two hours on this subject. That would be wonderful. And that poor girl. It was hilarious watching her trying to play off the pain of the first ankle lock hahaha. She was going to tap, then went scratch her head and then tapped. At least Dean was a nice guy and switched for her. I had a professor snap one on during a seminar. I thought my foot was about to pop off. Then he did it again! I wanted to cry hahaha.
Thank you Dean. The finer points make all the difference. I learned to use the bone closer to the wrist, with the other hand over the shin bone. I like your method better.
glad to hear if anything I do can contribute to the next generation.... IMO, there is no "best" way, but "my" best way... If my best way can help, its my biggest honor
You got it. It is an evolution. What works now may not have worked before, but it may work later. It's always good to have more tools in the toolbox. Your videos are a treasure trove. Much appreciated!
I like how you address when people defend the footlock by using the "pata viva" or live foot. When you defend by lifting your foot upwards. This is gold!!!!
Training and learning with this one move can give one an effective advantage in a real fight. too bad I checked this out just a little two late because I'm in N. County San Diego.
Probably, but whenever I see this kind of technique taught or used in a video I'm thinking that the guy doing the leg lock is very vulnerable to a kick to the face with the other foot.
Good video and technique. Do you have and tips on entry to the position? I only know a series starting with a standing opponent, sweeping them, falling into position, and going for the ankle look from there.
the ashi garami position you would usually have the knees pinched to isolate their knee for a heelhook, so it's not as important for straight footlocks? Just wondering😊. I see that your inside leg is protected from the heelhook and hinders their ability to stand up the way that you do it
Dean, why do you keep your inside leg between her legs as opposed to wrapping your inside leg over the leg you are locking and then crossing your ankles. I find much more control with that position as well as going belly down highly effective with that leg set up
Last year before I ever rolled a day in my life or taken a BJJ or grappling class, I was tapping people who had some training with straight ankle lock just from watching Dean Lister's videos.
Literally randomly dreamt of losing to a ankle lock in a friendly little fight with a dude. It didn't even hurt but the ref stopped us. Got me interested in learning how to prevent one haha. Weirdest dream ever
jokerhaha83 no knee control. To lock the ankle you need to control the knee line. His foot that’s on her hip? The knee attached to it is free. She needs to lock it down somehow, maybe by turning into it and pinning it to the floor. But it’s almost always a non-starter. If he’s already grabbed your ankle, and is positioning his feet on your hip it’s already too late. You need to start escaping or countering a lot earlier.
i did judo . i have a question . a straight footlock generates pain but but what kind of damage does? does it dislocate the ankle ? does it break the tendon??
Whoa.. checking out what the latest is with Dean Lister and I've found out it's troll season, lol. I am really curious to see jaun don's level haha. That'd be scary if anybody elite ADCC level had rage issues and took to facebook to setup matches/fights
Dean, how do you avoid and deal with the collar grab defense? I was thinking about grabbing my own collar, preventatively, like some judokas do, to block the strong hand. Then once locked up, cinch it up? P.S. That troll doesn't realize how scary the boogeyman is!
he says an inch makes all the differance in the world when punching someone. Not if he were punching her is fist would het more then three quarters of her face lol.
If you're a cop and you have two guys trying to get somebody in cuffs, they'll give you their arms really quick if you grab their legs and put a leg lock on them

stop eating animals
Maybe I will stop eating every animal now.
Who would be mean to her? She seems like a good student!
Hey prof.. Great video.. Any tips how to maintain the foot on the hip? They always push it down and sit on top of it and then the submission is gone
Hope she is doing well these days
that’s a brave woman!
I love that it’s more like a private lesson/mini seminar than just an ankle lock video.
You can really see how much Dean loves to share jiujitsu
I trained with Dean Lister in San Diego. Nice guy. I highly recommend training with him. He speaks fluent Spanish and Portuguese like I do.
claro irmao!!!!
I trained with him in iowa i 100% agree hes the nicest guy hes a funny guy too also i never knew how big he was until we were face to face very intimidating
why would I care? I speak English.
I also trained with him everyday.
This was something I was curious about, in another interview mentioned Lister speaking 4 languages - what's the fourth?

(5:40) Is this IBJJF legal at black belt ?
@@MrAdamjacques1 Heel hooks are allowed in black belt No-Gi only
@@NFT2 I know…. I’m a black belt 😂. I’m asking is this actually considered a heel hook by the IBJJF
@@MrAdamjacques1 Ah, I'm just a beginner but according to the rulebook on the website, all locks twisting the knee are disallowed.
I always keep coming back to this tutorial to perfect my straight foot lock finish! Thanks Prof. Dean.

We had Dean over 2 years ago, he showed us this footlock. I still use it with great effect.
There is so much quality information and detail in this video. Everything and more has been spoken of in this one vid.

Dean has always been an amazing fighter. He has never lost sight of what Grappling is about.
You're an absolute beast, and deal with haters quite well. Good luck on Saturday!

Incredible details. Thank you OG Boogieman for this vid!
I had full on anxiety the whole time watching it that her leg would break, damn! Loved the video.

still relevant after 10 years! 😊

Such good stuff. Great teaching style as well. Thanks a lot Dean!
Had a dream I needed to learn more leg/foot techniques. My dream brought me here.
Great in depth video. Best online

Huge Dean Lister fan. Keep kicking a s s and taking names

With the 'door stop' (the other leg), what is to stop them from kicking their leg over and escaping the position?
so much covered
thanks!
Last year before I ever rolled a day in my life or taken a BJJ or grappling class, I was tapping people who had some training with straight ankle lock just from watching Dean Lister's videos.

Awesome instruction!

does it dislocate the ankle ? does it break the tendon??
it depends on high high or low the lock is on... Can do both my friend
This is the most articulate explanation of the straight foot lock that I've ever seen. Completely idiot-proof.
hehe ;)
Any tips on how to maintain the foot of the hip? They always push it down and sit on top of it and then the submission is gone
RESPECT DEAN!
Dean is a god
Thank you
have you ever used the wushi finger hold?
If by finger you mean toe than yes
10:30 face to fist size ratio 😅
Can u do this to someone who tries to pull guard on you?
What a great name. My son is named Odin, and he appreciates your jujitsu ;p
Do you give seminars on the east coast? Do you have any coming up? If so, where are you going to be?
i'll be in NJ and NYC early march.... Also Boston March 4 and 5
Thanks bro.

thank you very nice one
Great video, nice explanations, and yes she is pretty.

P.S. That troll doesn't realize how scary the boogeyman is!
it is a problem for sure! I prefer with kimono to do the diagonal or cross or outside version of the straight footlock, harder to grab your lapel
Wisdom.
This is good information, but the background chatter was distracting.
I pray for you Jaun.
you know Chris Brennan, he has gym, Next Generation MMA,close to where I live
Good stuff!!!!!
Dean, why would you cut out your wiggle from the video?
NORWAY!
Ty
I would love to know Dean's thoughts on the bellying down of the straight ankle lock - seems to be a new trend..any thoughts?
yes it is a great variation and i use it when an opponent tries to roll or turn out of the initial attack
he says an inch makes all the differance in the world when punching someone. Not if he were punching her is fist would het more then three quarters of her face lol.

Yeah aight. Just ya know, don’t get on the ground
Is the foot lock legal?
In the IBJJF rule book version 5 the straight foot lock is legal if you are over 16 of age
Good thing I’m both flexible and have a chewbacca ankle.
