  • We welcome Ray Novak N9JA Senior Sales Manager of ICOM on the Ham Radio Crash Course to talk about a few of the computer interfaces for the highly anticipated IC-705 amateur radio. Ray demonstates how the ICOM RS-BA1 and Remote software can communicate with the IC-705 over wireless LAN (WLAN).

    One of the limitations with all the Icom radios, is that the network protocol is not documented. That means to use the network you are limited to using RS-BA1. No other software works. Icom will fall behind here, since all new radios from other manufactures do publish the ethernet connection info.

    Hey guys, I don't know much about amateure radio (working on getting my license) but I do know about networks and I'd like to offer a couple ideas.
    First, to get Josh on your radio, you could setup a VPN on your network, there is no super easy way to do this, but it would act as if Josh was on your local network at your home (will not work for the AT&T hotspot).
    2nd, setting up a VPN so you could access your radio remotely is by far the safest way to do this, the traffic is encrypted from point to point and less of a chance someone could see what you are doing. Feel free to reach out if I can help in any way!

    BTW, although it is not documented, the IC-705 works with a baud rate of 115200. Thus you should set this in the software you are using. The spectrum will be much faster.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Oh man, I'm going to try it. And yes, that faster baud rate will get you a much faster waterfall in software.

    • @Transmissions
      @Transmissions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still don’t understand why they force a virtual serial port over WiFi or usb. Both of those support way faster speeds. Why use serial at all???

  • @tomb18ca
    @tomb18ca 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh boy. As one can see from the video, the frame rate of the spectrum at 19200 is about 1/10th of what you would get at 115200. Since at 115200 on the 7300, gives about 4 frames a second, we see here that the refresh rate is about 1 frame every 3 seconds. This assumes it will work, since all the other radios with a CIV output requires 115200 otherwise it will not work. This is a major limitation of this radio. Also, the CIV documentation shows that VFO B is supported in the memory modes, but exactly like on the 9700, it does not even though it is documented. There should be no reason other than a design flaw that this cannot be run at 115200. Tom va2fsq.

    Hi Josh,
    Always very good info when Ray demos Icom's products. I saw Ray's call while I was on 20M FT8, but couldn't make a contact. Ray mentioned you helped him with the waterfall for WSJT-X. Have you done a video on the settings, and if not, can you mention the settings you suggested? Thanks. You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U

    I think it would still be better just connecting a raspberry pi direct to the 705 and VNC into the pi over WiFi. Much easier and more flexible. No need for a portable router.

    Is there a difference between the American ICOM IC 705 and the Japanese version of the 705?

  • @mikekennedy6810
    @mikekennedy6810 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Ray, Most Home Routers have a Port access called DMZ or De-militarized Port. Basically you say which IP the unit is. (this case 705) then you set the IP on the router to that unit. The AT&T router should give the 705 access to the internet, only thing is that now this unit (705) has access to the Wide open internet! No firewall. So people can access it. That means EVERYBODY. Just a thought to test it. I would not make it a permanent solution. Hope this helps! Mike K

      Mike, thank you for the tip. Not sure I want to open it up as every RS-BA1 user will want to test the IC-705 before they buy.... I would never get a chance to use my own radio. LOL

    Please tell where is the MacOSX or Linux software - ? Think about Unbuntu - where or when would Icom publish OSF in Github? Then we could make our own variants.

    It looks like you have to shell out $150 for RS-BA1 to get the virtual serial and audio ports over wireless lan? That's an important point that got skipped over... You would hope Icom wouldn't paywall a feature like that.

    My 705 won't connect to a windows laptop over bluetooth, only android. And that's what the manual says too. So 'software developers' needing to update to work with audio from the 705 over bluetooth would include Microsoft and Icom :D
