    This is truly an amazing series. Could you please update this for the "COLDER" setup for 2023/2024? I'm in desperate need to update my setup and you are BY FAR the most informative! Heck, you could just give me the items to purchase in these comments. Thank you x 10000!

      a) HOT?

      c) COLD?

      @@weekendgearguide Thank you so much for responding!
      I currently wear a Patagonia Insulated Powder Bowl jacket (2013) and Uninsulated pants (2013) over a capiliene baselayer and Arc'Teryx Rho pullover (2018), Patagonia Cap 4 (2013) expedition weight bottom, Hestra Heli mittens and an an Arc'teryx Balaclava. I've worn this resort skiing and felt a bit cold on the lift at 10 deg F and warm at 35 deg F (especially when exerting myself). I guess my best answer is I run "warm"?
      After 10+ years,. I feel overdue for a new set up for resort skiing.
      Questions: do you feel there's a general difference in quality/durability of Patagonia vs Arc'Teryx or others these days (Rab, Flylow, Norrona)?
      For resort skiing, do you feel Goretex Pro (or 3L) or whatever is top end is ideal or are the offbrand waterprotections fine (e.g., H2No)?
      What would be an ideal setup that would cover this range nowadays? Any particular deals I should be looking at?
      Thank you again for ALL this detail. I truly think Patagonia and Arc'Teryx should hire you to create some LOGIC and SENSE to their line ups!

      @@Froggywentcourtin Hello and thanks for the additional info.
      Since you typically run WARM like me, for Resort Skiing in temp range between 10F to 35F, if I were looking for any particular deals for a new Resort Skiing Setup, I would probably look at the up to 50% Sale that's happening at Patagonia.com right now.
      The Resort Skiing laying setup would be essentially keeping the Shell, but adjusting the base and mid-layer depending on approximate temp:
      @ ~35F
      - Baselayer: Capilene T-Shirt (which you already own)
      - Mid-Layer: R2 TechFace Hoody
      - Shell: Powder Town Jacket
      - Pant: Powder Town Bibs
      @ ~10F
      - Baselayer: R1 Pullover
      - Mid-Layer: Down Sweater Hoody
      - Shell: Powder Town Jacket
      - Baselayer Bottoms: Cap 4 (which you already own)
      - Pant: Power Down Bibs
      @ ~20F
      - Baselayer: R1 Pullover
      - Midlayer: Nano Air Hoody
      - Shell: Powder Town Jacket
      - Baselayer Bottoms: Cap 4 (which you already own)
      - Pant: Power Down Bibs
      For Durability, while GoreTex Pro Most Rugged is supposed to be the most durable, it's also the most expensive and not very breathable. For Resort Skiing, H2No is more than fine, as long as it has Pit Zips and all the Ski features and fits and layers well over various midlayers and hood fits and moves well over the helmet. On top of the current sale, Patagonia also have great warranty and service.
      Cheers!

      @weekendgearguide Any idea where you got the images for the green "Proton LT Hoody" that shows up at ~ 9:25? I know the Proton FL came in "Conifer" green last year, but can't find this green Proton LT anywhere. Mainly trying to find out from you if that image is from years ago, or if it's from this FallWinter 23/24 season? Also, any idea what color of green Arcteryx calls that so I can use the specific color name in my searching?

    Wow, this is an insanely crazy detail review/recommendation. I just recently brought the proton pant and to be honest, I am a little conflicted. The absence of zipper pockets and hem cinch was super surprising. I decided to keep it because it feels so versatile, but it could be a bad day if you forget your gaiter. Regarding the nuclei FL pants, why can't they keep making the atom LT pants? They feel almost identical.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching!
      Regarding lack of hem cinch, my guess would be due to the low profile tapped cuff design would negate in most cases the cuff adjustment. My issue with the Proton Pant is that it's too low profile to fit properly over my Ice Climbing Boots, yet too bulky to fit under. But for most other activities, it works and performs well! Zippered pockets would have been nice. Now I'm thinking this should have been added as a minor functional issue.
      Regarding the Nuclei Pant and Atom Pant, unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with the Atom Pants, but I would guess that the Atom Pants was designed more like a midlayer (similar to the Atom jackets), so that it is layered under a shell pants, where the Nuclei Pant is a belay outer layer meant to go over top of active pant and shell pant, as shown in my video.
      Cheers!

    • @thdjjfsfh
      @thdjjfsfh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@weekendgearguide you would think the atom LT pants would fit like a midlayer, but it's quite loose. Full side zip with cinch cord.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thdjjfsfh Thanks for the insight. Just briefly checked out some old reviews and yes it does look loose, but still trim enough to fit under a shell pant. I don't think the Regular Fit Nuclei Pant can fit under a shell, at least the not my Regular Fit Beta LT Pant Hadron of the same size.

    This is a real hidden gem channel! What are your thoughts on the Atom AR compared to the DAS Light Hoody?

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching!
      The Atom AR is warmer due to having 120g/m2 of Coreloft Insulation in the core of the jacket while the DAS Light Hoody only has 65g/m2 of Plumafill insulation.
      However, each jacket has different uses.
      The Atom AR is meant to be a midlayer or standalone "all round" jacket for semi-technical hiking, climbing, winter camping and use in town.
      While the DAS Light Hoody is more technical climbing oriented belay jacket with more weather/wind resistance and meant to layer over your midlayer (and shell if sized accordingly) as shown in the video. Plus it also has 2-way zip for belay use and convenient external chest pocket.
      Finally, the DAS Light Hoody is on sale now!
      So it really all depends on your specific use. Hope this helps.
      Cheers!

    @weekendgearguide love the vids. Can I be annoying and ask you to recommend between Arc’teryx and Patagonia and Noronna for someone looking for a hardshell, softshell and fleece to use with snowboarding and everyday use? I’m trying to decide between … HARDSHELL: Patagonia Granite Crest / Arcteryx Alpha SV / AR
    SOFTSHELL: Arc’teryx Gamma LT / Proton FL / Atom SL / LT
    FLEECE: Patagonia R1 Tech Fleece Hoody. Also would be great to have ones that aren’t very long in the arms.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks for watching and glad you love the vids.
      I’m not too familiar with Norrona other than their falketind alpha120 zip hoodie, which are long in the arms due to the thumbhole design, so maybe not the fleece for you since that’s not what you are looking for.
      For everyday use Hardshell, between the three you listed, the Patagonia Granite Crest would be the most suited due to hand pockets for hands and keys and external chest pocket for easy access to wallet and phone. Neither jackets are designed for snow boarding, but would still be able to handle manage.
      For everyday softshell or midlayer, the Proton FL which is now renamed the Proton Lightweight would be the best of those you listed again due to having external chest pocket for everyday use, and I think is more versatile over wider temperatures and activities than the others. It’s not as warm as the Atom LT, but you can always manage warmth with thicker baselayer.
      The R1 TechFace Hoody is kind of equivalent in use and temp ranges as the Proton FL, so you should probably get something that would layer well under the Proton FL like the Kyanite Lightweight, for a bit of extra warmth.
      Cheers!

    Great video! I would love to see one comparing the different belay jackets on the market like this video did for the Nuclei FL and DAS Light jackets. Maybe one that compares both Arc’teryx Nuclei’s, both of Patagonia’s DAS parkas, the Rab Alpine Generator, and any other synthetic jackets you think are worth considering on the market. A section for down-filled jackets would be interesting too, but I think that most ice climbers and mountaineers are in the market for a synthetic jacket, especially here in the United States.

      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and glad you liked it!
      I too would love to do a belay jacket comparison. Maybe in a future video ;-) so stay tuned!
      On a side note, I briefly owned the Patagonia DAS Parka but sold it, since I did not like the fact that the hood kept going over my eyes, when not wearing my climbing helmet.
      th-cam.com/video/kV1DFxsborA/w-d-xo.html
      Even when the hood was fully cinched, it did not help. The DAS Light does not have this issue, and although the Nuclei SV hood does not move with your head too well, at least it did not block the eyes.
      Cheers!

    Just curious
    Thanks for the deep informative video

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching!
      Although the Atom LT is a good midlayer, the Proton LT is more technical in it's design in line with the focus of this guide, while the Atom LT is more of an all round in it's design.
      Example of the Proton LT's technical design is the helmet compatible hood and practical external chest pocket for more convenient access. The low profile hood of the Atom LT along with the cleaner look with no external chest pocket blends nicely for the all round around town use.
      In addition, there are reports on reddit of the face fabric of the 2020+ Atom LT versions suffering from abrasion and pilling from backpacks, and users commenting no such abrasion issues on the Proton LT.
      Personally, I have not experienced either, but I don't use my Atom LT as much as my LEAF Atom LT and my Proton LT, and my Atom LT is 2018 version which is said to use a more abrasion resistant face fabric than the 2020+ version.

      of course it depends on the activtiy levels, mostly its just in the city using the subway in between walks outside in cold + rainy conditions for me

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joschach2997 Thanks for watching! And yes, it' depends on both activity level and temperature.
      In terms of pure warmth, the Atom AR is the warmest followed by the Proton AR and the least warmest the Atom LT.
      In terms of breathability, the Atom LT is the most breathable, followed by the Proton AR with the Atom AR being the least breathable.
      Based on this, and mostly in city for subway rides and walks outside in cold + rainy, then the main deciding factor is just temperature level. Less cold you would wear Atom LT, and for cold you would wear Proton AR, and for coldest you would wear Atom AR. Beta AR would be worn when rainy in less cold conditions, or when it's windy and snowing heavily in cold and coldest conditions.

    If you don’t need to size up for the Proton lt/fl hoody, I find the length in front fits correctly with a nuclei fl of the same size.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and the comment.
      I agree, that with the original medium sized Proton FL Hoody v1, the front length fits perfectly under my medium Nuclei FL Jacket, since both the Proton FL Hoody v1 and Nuclei FL Jacket have the same short front hem design.
      However, with the new medium sized Proton FL Hoody v2, unfortunately the front length sticks out under the same medium sized Nuclei FL Jacket.
      The visual difference between medium Proton FL Hoody v1 and medium Proton FL Hoody v2, under medium Nuclei FL Jacket, is illustrated in this part of the video:
      th-cam.com/video/auPO7QHdUpU/w-d-xo.html
      I guess you have the original Proton FL Hoody with the shorter front length hem, correct?
      Cheers!

    • @angus2248
      @angus2248 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@weekendgearguide I have had both, and currently have the v2. I find it is about a cm shorter than my nuclei, and 2cm longer than the original. The nuclei is much longer in the back however.
      I suspect the sizing differences are due to the actual item sizes. All of my jackets are XL, which may mean they are cut differently relative to other jackets.
      Please continue to make these layering and insulation videos - I find them incredibly useful to send to friends who may be curious about the outdoors, as you explain it well.
      Have you tried using a base layer on your lower body for these layering systems? I find an appropriate weight base on my legs combined with a soft/hardshell is incredibly effective for weather down to about -15c while active. I do use my proton pants starting at -5/10c, but they don't have the same weather resistance.
      I would also recommend talking about a soft-shell as a replacement for a hardshell in many of the conditions listed, as they are more breathable, lighter, and equally snow-proof at low temperatures as a hardshell. I used to be a hardshell only person, but since discovering soft shells, I only use them for rain and incredibly heavy snow.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@angus2248 Thanks for the detailed response!
      You have brought up a very good point regarding different sizes, and based on your experience, I should probably try if possible to take into account for future comparison reviews.
      My experience and comparisons are based on the fact that Arc'teryx uses size Medium for their reference for weight and models on their website, and I typically wear small often compare with how medium fits and layer, and found them to be proportionally sized.
      However, from your experience, it seems for XL the Proton FL layers very well with the Nuclei FL Jacket of the same size, where for my M size it does not. For my next videos, if I can, I will try to get one of my taller buddies I climb with and if they're available to try out XL in store and maybe purchase for themselves and give me their feedback, if I'm doing another layering video.
      For lower body, if I'm not using the Proton Pant, I would use a baselayer especially under a hardshell on colder days.
      I do use soft shell jackets for Ski Touring ascents, like the Gamma LT, Gamma MX or Patagonia Upstride, layered only over a baselayer, but still bring a Hardshell or insulated Hardshell for the descent. May do a comparison on that if I find some time.
      Cheers!

    Great video, as usual. I think is too soon to recommend Arc'teryx about Nuclei SV fabric choice. Agree, it is not sturdy enough like the Dually Belay fabric. But, It will require more years of testing and abuse before recommend a new fabric. Arato fabrics have an excellent abrasion resistance.
