Hey Anna! Cool thoughts. With my AIR experiences I never had awards boost me, it was the work and what I could give to the sponsoring group. Having experience seems to be better. Public programming, speaking, art exhibits, publication all matter it seems. But the number one plus is WHAT CAN I GIVE that will a matter to the organization that will help them promote who they are and what their focus is. Having a unique style with voice matters a bunch, too! So off I go to my studio to work toward AIR number three, my crowning ultimate, Isle Royale. Just keep plugging along. It’s always hard to tell what judges want as all panels are different, but they do want to know if your art is a hobby or lifetime work and passion. Go get ‘em! You’ve got the skills. 😊❤️
I think it is super important to understand that we all have to build our channels, where we display what we did and what we work on. I don't think you have a big problem if you keep up your work here online :)
This was an incredibly thoughtful analysis of an artist's life and career. Great job! Very helpful and motivating. Good luck with the residency searches. I am going through the same thing as I keep painting and showing locally, slowly building up a body of work and moving forward with skill and understanding of my own art and expression. Keep going!
Thank you so much! One great piece of advice I've heard (from Jake Parker) is "making products, not projects. Finished, not perfect" There's tons of ways for us to publish ourselves, we live in a great time where we don't have to wait for someone else to "publish" us, so that's what I'm going to focus on too, keep painting!!
You did that very well. I wish I knew how you could get a residency. You're an amazing artist and I love your work. If there's anything I can do to further your journey, please let me know.

Thank you so much for your thoughts! One thing I love about the art life: we can blaze our own trails! I hope you get the Isle Royale one.
