- Today we are installing a new muzzle brake on the preferred barrel blank. This brake is made by RCI (recoil control innovations) and I'll provide a link below to them. If you buy a muzzle brake from them, let them know Vaughnprecision sent you. I do like these brakes, especially for the price! So lets get to some machining on the lathe and start turning down the tenon and threading the barrel.

I started using a copper ring made from heavy gauge panel box grounding wire between the chuck jaws and the barrel to help act as a pivot when indicating angular runout along with radial runout on the bore. It works wonders of not bending the barrel when using grizzly rods, pin gauges, or long stem indicators.
Edit: I'm probably the oldest younger , 34, person I know with using that method though. Doing all my work on a rebuilt(by yours truly) 1943 Southbend 10l.
Its great to watch the machining and threading and what’s involved in getting it all ready to spin the muzzle brake on the barrel. Thanks for making this video. Cheers 🍻
Dude that is so cool how you get everything setup !! Excellent Video
Joe! do a review on this channel like it's a rifle scope, yeah? Ol boy needs more views than he's getting.
@@jcarry5214 man This Channel is going to be HUGE !!! One of the best !
Very nice, I wish to know how work with the lathe so make more videos please , thank you.
Also cut your thread relief with a VNMG insert (or similar). I Would never suggest having a square drop off from threads. You will end up with hanging threads, weak threads, etc. A VNMG will square up the shoulder, and angle into the threads perfectly. Also you would use same tool for the crown. So if you haven't looked into VNMG I'd highly recommend. Most versatile insert there is.
If it shoots as half as good as it looks, it will be awesome! Nice work.
Like that break. I’m gonna have to start suggesting those to my customers. Wanted to run something by you. Been doing a lot of barrel threading for breaks and suppressors lately on barrels that are too short to run through my head stock (have G0709 lathe). I’ve been have to do the work between centers. Really liking it. I realized the other day I can hold the chamber end in one of my 5C collets, and then put a live center in the muzzle. I support it about 6-8” back with a steady rest for extra support. Seams to be working well and has sped my work time A LOT. Wanted to get your thoughts on the set up. If you want pictures just send me an e-mail

ive done them that way for years works great
That was awesome, I wish you were my gunsmith....
ENJOYED THIS!
That's very good work
Pretty sweet barrel..............
We’ll see. They don’t lap their barrels and some of them foul like factory savages. And some people get crooked barrels, and lots of people get empty mail tubes because their idea of shipping a barrel is to put a 4 pound barrel in a cardboard pipe with no filler or padding and throw one sheet of tape over the end. They have good barrels too but preferred has made a bunch of people mad.
Great Video. what lathe are you using?
Great video 👍🏼🍻👊🏼
I couldn't tell from the video but when you cut that crown you should be cutting from the inside out to leave the burr on the threads where it can be filed off easily and won't matter.
Also on that indicator every mark is 0.0001" so you finished indicating with 0.0007"ish of run-out. That's probably fine but indicating to under 0.0002" shouldn't take much longer. Cheap peace of mind.
I don’t know what I keep saying one ten thousands when I know better. Yes, I do cut from the inside out.!
Because of how your pilot is smaller than the rod, it can't go in deep enough to be very accurate at the end of the rod. I'd opt for making a rod, or ordering ground drill rod from mcmaster so you can get it in the barrel further. 2" ideally. Also you aligned it to an uncut barrel. You should of just parted the barrel, chamfered, and then did the alignment. Aligning to something that won't exist, isn't the best method. At any rate, I just subscribed, great channel for n00bs!
Looks great. But running a lathe, I know from experience , "WEAR SAFTY GLASSES." (LOL) And no match books in shirt pocket!!
👍
why did you cut 1/2" off the end? Maybe I don't understand the type of barrel you ordered. Was there really a problem with the rifling? I thought barrels were rifled long then cut to length.
This is a barrel blank, not a pre-fit so you need to cut off the end.
Good information you do beautiful work !
I far prefer to cut integraal muzzle brakes once you know where the barrel will be in the action, which would make that 1/2 inch you cut off usable for over all length, since it would be back bored. if I want a screw on brake I prefer to make my own, again cutting the holes after I know where the brake indexes to on the barrel. Far more economical than buying some one else's brake. As an aside, the gains in effectiveness claimed for brakes with special geometries is questionable. I do love brakes, I have one on a Stevens Bolt acton 30-30 even, for use by the grand kids, and then all the way up; starting with my 300 Weatherby, then both 375 H&H's, a 416 Rigby, my 45-70 handgun, of course the factory 460 Smith and Wesson's and finally my 458 Win mag. There is no reason not to use brakes, no one should be standing beside a muzzle when you fire a gun. And in all honesty, when hunting, the 3 to 5 shots I take a year really do not hurt as much as some people think they will. And, every shot with hearing protection is much nicer than the same shot with an an un braked gun. My hunting buddies claim that at any distance from me when I am shooting the 300 sounds quieter than most rifles. I think the brake makes a wider pattern and so the sound is less harsh in one direction the way an un braked gun is. Nice machining work by the way.
In a Tactical situation a break can give away your location so a flash hider or a suppressor is better in that situation.
