As far as lighting a fire with the flares, I will occasionally chase a deer into a wolf, use the flare to scare the wolf off, and then pick up the flare and light a fire with it to harvest the deer. Works great for early game when weapons are unavailable or scarce.
I've done some testing and this seems to be the case but ONLY IF you're currently undetected by the wolf before casting the first stone. But yes, if you don't want to use a flare, a stone can do the job.
I thought about it when I start playing the game that everything has finite resources like clothes, matches, and scrap metal. Even in pilgrim where things are plentiful, it still dwindles so I switched clothing to natural resources like wolf, deer, and rabbit. As for matches, I use magnifying glass as much as I can on sunny day, and stock up on food and water on clear days, and eat them during cloudy days to conserve matches.
I am in about 60 days on pilgrim and still have not found the magnifying glass in Mystery Lake. I have mapped the entire region and searched everywhere including the pepper's cache. I still have a lot of matches but it's frustrating I cannot find that tool!
I’m sure I could get used to using metric for weight measures in the game. Everything is measured in 10ths regardless of imperial or metric anyway, given time it might grow on me (though it would be hard looking at a picture of a gallon jug and thinking in terms of liters 🤔). I still love my Fahrenheit for temps though lol.
I use Celsius in this game as being above “feels like 0” means you are fine. I am pretty sure even at 0/32 I’d slowly freeze to death irl but making it simply a postive or negative makes it easy
@@FFgamesftw that's a pretty good way of looking at it Anything negative means bad, anything in the positives means good. I might give that a try. I'm so used to Fahrenheit that its second nature to me, I don't have to think about it much. I just finished chapter 4, and have been thinking about going back into my survival save again. I might try switching to Celsius and seeing how it feels
I use matches to light my way through dark areas. I never had issues with conserving matches. But I never played pass day 100 because u accomplished everything (gear, exploring)
Not all players play the same way, so these guides are designed around the concept of infinite survival. But yeah, if you really do need to see in the dark a match will do that!
@@cougar2k720 Good policy most of the time, but sometimes it is better to light a fire in bad weather to avoid freezing, starving or dehydrating to death. Also, if you already needed to light a flare or torch for the light, and have been collecting up some sticks during your travels, then that's basically a free fire, day or night, sun or cloud. Unless you don't have the time, there's no real reason not to light a fire and do any cooking you might need while you have the chance to light it while using your already spent resource.
@@Seriously_Unserious I would light a fire for sure during the time that I am caught in the blizzard to regain warmth to survive, but that's really rare nowadays in my own play through since I am more aware of weather changes and opt not to leave the structure if the weather is not ideal. I should also say that I am playing on pilgrim, where everything is a lot more forgiving and every location I have explored has large amount of cooked meat and water to last for months until sunny days (which I think happen more often in Pilgrim). It's probably harder not to use matches in stalker or interloper because everything is significantly scarce including sunny weather.
@@cougar2k720 Weather is definitely much less forgiving in Stalker, and even more brutal in Interloper. You'll even find weather less forgiving in Voyageur if you try that level. I normally play on Custom difficulty with settings that create a hybrid Stalker-Interloper experience, with Stalker wildlife and loot (so I can get the manufactured tools and firearms) but Interloper weather and recovery, so I can also get the challenge of the harshest conditions to have to work around. Of all the regions I've explored though, I find Hushed River Valley and Bleak Inlet tend to be where I go through the most matches. HRV due to the lack of shelters often forcing me to camp outdoors in snow shelters and BI because of the damn incessant wind freezing my guy constantly.
How have I never thought of the torch thing before? Small brain, I guess. I haven't spent enough time to run out of matches before dying to some silly mistake, but conserving matches is something I should think about more. It's easy to forget how finite something is when you always seem to be finding them...
Only if you have more than one option available in your inventory will it present you with the option to do so. Otherwise it will use the only available method.
Hey! love your vids, keep up the hard work. Question, On interloper, gives proper conservation, how many days do you suspect it will take to exhaust all matches?
Depends on how many you ultimately find, but probably 200-1000 days, depending on how much conservation you do. I know some players on the forums have gone roughly 1500 days before clearing their last match, and others have made it to about 150 or so and run out. I'd wager that with an 'average' amount of conservation you'd land in the ballpark of 400-700 days.
@@Lonelywolfofficial Because you have so many AWESOME!! videos with good TLD survival tips and tricks, I'd love for you to give the metric units a try so you can see / discuss the in-game survival benefits. I'm also an American who doesn't use metric, but I play the game in metric because... 1) Every measurement is rounded with metric in mind: clothing, meat, water, tools are to the kg, the half kg, or the 1/10kg. This makes counting and adjusting weight much easier. 2) Knowing the weight of something is only relevant to knowing what percent of your total it's taking up. For example, it doesn't do me any good knowing the weight of the climbing rope (5kg -11lbs), but it's immediately useful to know it's 5 of my 30 encumbrance. 3) Honestly, not knowing the units IRL helps me focus on the numbers and measurements that matter in-game. I'm (ashamed) to say, even with all this playing with metric units on, I don't have a better understanding of what a kg or liter means in the real world: I just know 1kg of deer meat is 800 calories (is just over a full night's rest) and that's good enough for my survivor. The same way when playing Pokemon, I don't convert from PokeCoins to dollars, it's because it doesn't really matter in the real world only in the game.
nearly 2 minutes long intro, should have gotten to the point quicker and not walked around a lot spoiling things about the game, i didnt want to know there will be wolves and guns :(. but thnx
I'm sorry you found those items to be spoilers... There's a lot to The Long Dark that I would consider basic, such as the items like that. But my bad... I made the intro on this one a bit longer for no reason in particular other than I was being a bit wordy and I probably should have kept it quicker. Kinda too late now sadly.
Matches have never been a problem for me, I die to early in the game to be able to run out of them
Ah... they can't be a problem if you don't live long enough to run out!
Sometimes i can't even find any of them before dying of cold

You might as well using a stone & save the flare .Apparently, wolves are afraid of stones (when guarding their prey) but not the fire !

Good advise on saving your matches. Matches (and fire-strikers) are pretty much what will determine how many days you can survive.
Yup!
After I saw this tip, I only light fire now on a sunny day, lol.

half a liter so 0,50L is 0,13 Gal in ur game if im not mistaken

Are they able to be acquired through beachcombing?
No, they can't. Matches are finite. Once you run out they are gone.
It seems you've met your match, Lonely... Also, when did you go to BI radio tower? Did I miss a stream?
I do have some other runs that I don't record from for the series. This is one of those runs.

good stuff
3 zones and was only given 12 matches. And no prybar. Lame.
but liters is metric....
gallons is imperial (freedom units) so technically you kinda did learn better ROFL
