DIY Cat Toys - How to Make a Feather Wand

- Welcome to the Friskies Do-It-Yourself Toy Maker Series! Watch this video to learn how to make a Feather Wand your cat will absolutely adore.
You'll need:
- 2 colors of yarn
- 1 wooden dowel
- 1 needle and thread
- 1 wooden bead
- Feathers
- 1 thin leather strap
- A little bit of blue string.
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 drill
What to do:
- Using your thumb to hold it in place, wrap your first spool of yarn around your hand.
- Cut the end. And add the other color!
- Next, carefully take the yard off your hand and, using your blue string, tie them up in the middle.
- Cut the loops. You got yourself a yarn ball!
- Take your leather strap and sew it to the yarn ball.
- Using another shorter leather strap, sew the feathers to the end.
- Slide the wooden bead over the base of the feathers.
- Tie the shorter leather strap to the longer one.
- Remember the drill? Time to use it!
- Put the strap through the hole and tie off the end.
Voila! Get it, kitty! Get it!

If you don't have a drill just carve a notch all the way around the dowel so the yarn wrong move then just hot glue or super glue it

Purina Friskies I just found these videos this afternoon & LOVING these ideas! I've made the mice before but not for years.. My 'fur sons' (2 awesome cats!) have already booked my weekend to make some cat toys for them. Can't make any plans with those big paw prints in the calendar date boxes. Tiger and Totoro agree that the spider is the favorite for both, and then the stuffed mice - with catnip included. Of course their ' cat human daddy' will be helping with a tent. :) Our boys are NOT 'spoiled'.....hahaa..just loved.

One CAN make this with less labor and tsuris! Bamboo grows along my backyard fence, and makes great "poles" for wand toys. Since the bamboo is flexible, the movements are more like a bird or a bug and it weighs less than a dowel, so it's less tiring for the human! Don't bother with the "sewing" through a leather thong: you"ll puncture your fingers! Use some household cement to secure the thong into the hollow of the bamboo, and to attach the thong to the feather assembly. Then wrap around with cloth adhesive first aid tape. Please DO NOT USE A HOMEMADE POM-POM. Cats will pull the yarn out--no matter how tightly you think you have tied it--and can swallow it It looks cute, but is dangerous for your cat! I collect bird feathers shed by the overflying seagulls and pigeons, and also buy a bag of colored chicken feathers from a crafts store to make wand toys--but then, I make a bunch of them for myself and friends and the local rescue group. Safer than a pom-pom is a little crocheted ball, and if you crochet tightly, you can stuff a jingle bell INSIDE the ball and your cat will chase and fetch and have great fun.
If you have a flute or basically any thin instrument, you probably have a cleaner stuck with a hole at the top. Those are purrfect

Instead of leather, use elastic. Much strechier, easier to replace, and less expensive. Plus, you can find elastic everywhere.

Please make sure your cat doesn’t eat the plastic, because it can block the cat’s intestines. It cost my friend $1300 to have a plastic Safeway bag removed from her cat’s intestines! Otherwise the cat would have died.

Amusing to hear the narrator pronounce "voila" as "wallah." Other than that, I'd rather buy a toy than make one. If one doesn't have all this stuff on hand, making the toy is much more expensive than purchasing a similar one. Cute cat, though.
Kreszentia Bichlmaier Actually, unlike a lot of times when I've heard it pronounced by Americans as "wallah", the narrator *does* pronounce the V sound. Took me by surprise, to be honest, considering the usual mispronunciation.

This is fine except the wool ball. You can't tie the knot around the wool hard enough to stop those short pieces from coming out and having some cats eat them.

Thumbs down! They don't warn you not to leave it alone with your cat who may chew off the yarn or feather and choke on it. This is very common with cats. Also, why a leather string? That doesn't sound very animal friendly. :(
