ETON E1 vs. SONY ICF-2010 SSB SHANNON VOLMET

  • This video is a comparison of the Sony ICF-2010 (ICF-2001D) and the ETON E1 in a shortwave Single Side Band receiving situation. The station is Shannon Volmet with a relatively good signal.
Using the same extrnal antenna, the SSB reception on the Sony receiver seems to be a portion better, as the signal sounds more powerful with less beckground noise, which is very surprisng to me. Maybe the Eton needs some kind of adjustment. User input of E1 owners who have the same "issue" are kindly requested to drop a comment or an ideda for improvement.
First noise reduction in the video after a few seconds was achieved by switching filter bandwith from 4 to 2,3 kHz.

Looks like there is a radio coming built along the lines of the Eton E1 I saw it on Universal Radio.

The audio on the Eton sounds more warm and natural, the Sony sounds harsher and clipped. I've owned 2001, 2001D and 7600D sets over the years and they were all excellent receivers.

I have both receivers and there are differences, the Eton has a larger speaker with a different audio amp. Also has more bandwidths to choose. With mine the differences are not as dramatic. Good job on the SONY back light LED!

This video is very interesting for me who am E1 user.
Surely E1 is felt noisy a little. This seems to be common to a recent digital receiver.
In the case of Sony, the characteristic of the audio circuit may prevent from being noisy?
In the case of E1, I think that it improved by utilizing a pass band tune.
However, I think that the fundamental sound quality is excellent in Sony which is also an audio maker.

Thanks for posting! Interesting comparison. These are two high performance portable shortwave radio receivers. The antennas could have been reoriented, also changing bandwidth could help improve signal reception. I've been into radio since childhood which motivated me to pursue a career in electronics technology.

I have both radios. The Eton 1 allows you to choose the AGC mode so audio will not be so compressed and more natural. The 2010/2001D has great audio, but when using good phones because its loudspeaker is very limited.

Sony seems to be stronger in sensitivity and the sound is better or closer to one's ears. So the sound quality is better on Sony in SSB and not as noisy as on Eton.

Interesting comparison ! I love the SSB sound of sony but this receiver has no analog SSB steps (no fine tuning on SSB).

    A help
Friends my Sony ICF-2010, there appeared a problem.
I need to call and charge 3 times for it to work.
But only FM, Air and AM does not only tune in.
Someone in the group already had this
    defect in your Sony?
I've already looked into batteries and support connectors, flat cabol power supplies.
The display module already tested is ok.
Does anybody know of any tips to help which component is faulty.
    I would appreciate any tips.
    Thank you

Butter Bean - you can download a 3D printing file for the battery door on the Groups.io forum for the Sony ICF-2010. Then send the file to a service bureau like Shapeways.com or MakeXYZ.com (cheaper). I recommend SLA resin printing method for a higher quality and better fit.

The Sony is definitely a better receiver, although the Eton E1 could have surpassed the Sony if the design was done correctly, ie..very poor shielding in crucial sections, drifts far away from zero beat, very unstable. It's a shame because when it finally settles down and stops drifting and you manage to keep it zero beated, it is a fantastic receiver.
