You’re very welcome Steve and glad you like the engine stand. Hopefully it makes working on those big SMX’s a little more enjoyable 👊🏻 Merry Christmas and thanks for the shout out! Thank you for all the content, tips and tricks you give all of us unfiltered which helps us all learn a little more than we knew before. Looking forward to making the SMX setup I have run with you big boys soon!
You are a good person
Steve, Watching the interaction between you and your son is worth a million bucks! The boy is really growing up in front of our eyes. Your family unit is the most important thing in life. Love your videos! Thank you!
Kile, please be careful with those loose strings on your hoodie around belts. Accidents can happen so quick. Nobody wants to get hurt around doing what they love.
I'm for tucked in, always. 90% of the time, they get in your way when leaning over anyway.
I got my long hair caught in fan belt of running car once woke up with a bald spot bloody nose and concussion and no idea what just happened to me
I have hoodies I just take the string out of, I had a hoodie string get stuck in a jig saw and it was very scary and that was a jig saw. Imagine like a lathe or circ saw. You’re in some trouble I can assure you
Had that happen with shop apron. Using free standing grinder polishing side. Big wire wheel. Grabbed apron strings tied in front. Managed to lock my arms straight and it proceeded to rip that heavy denim apron and part of my shirt right off. Had a few bruises but nothing bad. Guys all had great laugh and nicknames once they saw I was not hurt.
@@russellridge8623 and that's why you tie under the apron when front-tieing
That's right Steve, TEACH him. Don't give him all the answers. Make him figure it out.
Like I said before, you have to love working with your son. What a great combo. Got to keep the Morris name going
Crap that's what i was going to get you this year. A engine stand.
I could send you some hot muggy air from Louisianan
So what have you thought about doing or making with the extra parts from the CNC mill? Rails and a ball screw.
I know why Dewey didn't like the dog box. He clearly prefers synchros!
He didn't want to miss Nate saying "don't tase me bro!"
Nice play! 😂👍
Pretty strong endorsement for a crank trigger and coil near plug setup.
Shawn,Sean your the man💪💪💪Very nice of you to get that stand for them. 😇😇🙏🏻
Kile, @ 5:13, the piece you are holding is the key. The machined place it fits into is the keyway.
Sean is the man! Wow that's a sweet gift even approved by Steve and Kyle Morris
Man has Kyle come a long way in a year. Keep up the great work.
TOTALLY agree, he is really getting to be quite presence working through the dyno sessions.
I love Kyle. His genuine curiosity is awesome, asking what difference in the camshaft would do 8500 rpm, etc. takes some questions right out of my mouth
I bet that monster sounds good in person
Best Tech and videos yet Thank you Steve and Kyle And Merry Christmas from the crazy old man in the Yucatan
i work for CH Hanson in Naperville Illinois, Really a great company, they sell a lot of really nice vices clamps, saw, grinders and industrial equipment for welders like myself.
I hope our products do an excellent job for you. George Gibson our product manager does a great job providing spare parts and accessories for anything you'll need Steve.
Godspeed, Ryan Amador
Years ago, I built an old Harley Shovelhead engine. Bored, decked, balanced, ported and installed a ported and polished CV carb. I was expecting around 100 HP. After fire up and break in, it felt stock! After a bunch of playing around with timing the cam and ignition, jetting and a few valve adjustments, I figured to dual plug the heads. It ran really good when it was running rich. Installed the dual plugs, and the matching ignition, DAMNED THING LEAPED TO LIFE! We fairly easily hit our 100HP goal. Sometimes all it takes is the right ignition to bring a build together. Old tech sometimes needs a little bit of help to bring it to life.
Was that with a points ignition or electronic?
@@Ron_Masterjohn That was with points and dual coils to start with, I tried a hallcell electronic ignition but didn't like how hard it was to start and went back to the points.
@@picklesontheroad interesting thanks,
Tim Taylor would be proud sir!!!!
Steve, FWIW, Beta is one of the biggest pro tool manufactures in Europe and elsewhere in the world. They have a very rich motorsports heritage and have been in the tool business for decades. Quite a few F1 teams use their stuff and their yearly, beefy catalog is very drool-worthy. About 20 years ago I worked for a friend that tried to introduce Beta to the US market (we were based out of Denver) but the domestic brands were too entrenched and had too many mechanics in their debt to switch even through Beta was superior (IMHO).
Brought back memories of when my Dad was teaching me things A different industry but the same concept. Critical thinking with good results proves that you have a good understanding of the subject matter.
Shoutout to whoever sent Steve the engine stand 👊👊
I really like how you buy the tool for the need and what’s it’s designed to do and not for the name and price. I’m the exact same way..I’m only going to use a tool maybe once or twice a month or even a year I have no problem buying a lot less expensive tool..but if it’s a everyday use tool I’ll spend the money on name brand
Way to go Sean ! I was just going to wish Steve and all at SME a merry and safe Christmas! You topped me!!
Mountain Motor. In a rusty old whatever.. I like it!
Steve and Kyle, y'all rock! Deweys doing Dewey, I see. Got to love that engine stand. Peace
says: "No blanket, no bones, nothing to chew on." That is why I didn't go in there dad.
7:50 Classic dad stuff. He's got it Steve!
My dad was exactly the same way and look how I turned out 😁
Good job on the video Kyle. Your best job of explaining things and overall comments. You looked very comfortable in front of the camera.
Kyle, Congratulations on that monster engine tune. I was impressed with your call to change the ignition out. Yes that is a big cam and thanks for sharing some of the specs!!!
Right on Shawn/Sean...Merry Christmas
I love the puppy Q.C.. He's making sure everything is copacetic lol
Sorry Steve, I didn’t quite understand your explanation of the coil and taser. Could you please do live demonstration on Nate so we all get a better understanding of the differences?
My step-dad taught me how to read plugs back in 79 at 11yrs old, then built my 1st 2.0l Ford w/ dual Webber carbs that revved to 8500 rpm. screamer. We won our class championship on my 1st built engine.
WOW Awesome, Thanks Professor Morris Jr for the awesome lesson this is the best Engine Channel hand's down !!!! Keep up the Amazing Work!!!!!
And there's "Dewey" look'n for something "CHEWY!" GIT ON IT BOY! THANK YOU, J
It's really great seeing Kyle grow in confidence so much each time in front of the camera. Great video chaps. Hope to see you in Australia one day.
Great update with interesting tech as well.Nice to see the great interaction you and Kyle have. Keep moving forward.
Love how Steve makes Kyle think for himself instead of just giving him the answers. Also you might've lost (or not made) money on this dyno session, but you gained quite a bit of new knowledge in the meantime. Crazy to see the massive difference between the MSD box and the smartcoils. Great video guys.
The IGN1A coils are inductive vs. capacitive discharge. As Steve said, the inductive spark last a lot longer (typically 1ms). You also lose spark energy through the dizzy - was this one phased correctly?
As far as I'm aware, the primary reason people went to CDI was in the days of distributors when a single inductive coil didn't have enough time to charge at high revs. With the availability of multi-coil systems, no need to waste spark energy in a dizzy.
Great as always. This huge engine reminds me of Sonny's engines.
On a different fuel how much more power would it make? 10% more on E85? 15% more on Methanol?
Nice gift John!. Kudos to you brother.
Hey Steve,
Tim here, theres more there, the ignition is still ur achilles heal....but u got SIGNIFICANT power........i wish the torque curve was better tho....a nice flat one shows volumetric efficiency......when it dies down quickly, we still got an issue, fundamental NA........i know ur a boosted dude, a bit more attention, that 800, some odd cube monster, COULD muster a better torque curve......make it more usable, NOT just peak #.......just a thought
Great video guys glad you didn’t get sick after the show several people I know that went are sick since then thanks for sharing
You have to be really proud Steve, Kyle is becoming quite the tech and looking way more relaxed on camera.
Well done young Morris! You're a natural.
Wow that is a big big difference.
Your work is always on point. Enjoyed more time with Kyle. So much like dad.
I just love the way Steve is like you know it's only 1200 horsepower it's not like you're going to be pulling the shoots I mean you're talking about an engine you're going to drive on the street you can put pump gas in it and you got 1253 horsepower right there under your foot anytime you want like Steve talks about like no problem
A 2" spacer under the throttle plates may slow the torque drop at RPM. Plenum (room to breath)
I have a question. This is a big NA engine, but in runs on 93 octane pump gas and has a 115 LSA camshaft, not usually known for making peak torque numbers. 1253 lb/ft divided by 843 CID is 1.486 lb/ft/CID.
Is this not way beyond a suspiciously good result?
I mean, "Some say" that that just the top 10% of engine builders manages 1.35 and only the top 1% achieves 1.40.
Um ok holy sh#$. I been whiching all steve videos and some others. On set ups and tuning. And it just now scares me. Because I almost kinda understand what they are talking about and understand the conversation. Holy sh#$ I think I am learning something 😢😢😢😮😮😂
my opinion is this unit was built to have a torque peak at an rpm closer to idle with a broad curve and lower peak hp. like a truck application. or jet boat etc...the curve on the screen was strong indicator but when kyle mentioned 115 degree lobe seperation angle it drove it home to me. Engine like a nascar application has a much lower numerical angle like 108 or lower. picture that air and fuel has mass, when its swirling suspended in the intake plenum, runner and port it has weight. and a lower angle aids proper cylinder filling at high rpm above 8k where a nascar engine operates, aiding cylinder filling. lobe seperation angle is a very little known aspect of cam design. but has as much to do with engine performance characteristics as lift or duration.
It's great watching your son become a Bad Ass, from father to son.
Nice ... new tool day is always a good day! You should hook up with Fireball Tool for one of his fab tables, he has got it sussed and some nice products. Also features in Aboms new workshop
Why do people keep calling KEYS, key ways. It's like calling a fence post a post hole. 😒
Kyle needs one of those in his Mustang. Help keep front end down. 😂. Merry Christmas all Steve & Co.
KYLE, NICE BIG CUBE FORD CLEVELAND STYLE ENGINE YOU HAVE THERE.
Your gonna love that saw when fabricating stuff! My dad had one we did everything from roll bar tubing to small pencil tubing to making bushings! Looks cumbersome but it's not its very versatile especially if you put wheels on it lol
Shop: Hey, we got 1200hp but we can add timing and get more unless thats enough.
Customer: You actually called to see if I want more HP?
Shop: Your right, stupid question, we will call you back.
The intake needs more volume the throttle plates are to close to the runners
It a street motor
Awesome job Kyle!!!! You did awesome on that to figure that. And it make 200+ more HP!!!! 💪🥵🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
An easy 1200 hp @ 6500 with Conservative tune on 93….The beauty of a mountain motor!
Merry Christmas to you and your family mate
I like when the caution screen comes up. I know its going to be good! Not that anything is bad.
17:10 Kyle that cam sounds like a baby cam.
I wish I had a father like you, he is a lucky kid!
Kyle, as a thought, try thinking and speaking of your service purchasers as clients rather than customers. Everybody goes to 7-11 and "the biggest dang coffee shop franchise in the entire world" and gets ripped off- because they are customers, people who dropped by and whos pocket may not drive this way tomorrow. Now, down at Miss Salley's Breakfast Salon, you get service that know your name, is your coffee black or with cream; there you are a "client", someone they hope for a continuing business relation with. You seem to have the feel of it well in hand, I just thought it might give you a different insight. Btw, I learned that difference from a car dealer named Carl Sewell, a Cadillac peddler, one of the very best.
Thanks for another great video!
Nothing against a multi coil system but I believe something was wrong with the MSD box.
agreed!
Typical and why I’m not to excited about using MSD
Hey SM team, don't be scared to post a full length, unedited video. Or at least a longer format one that shows even the preliminary pulls and tuning.
Steve - take a look at a Fireball Vice... lol
Them Kelly Green 🟢 Spark Plug Holders, Are You Telling Everyone ND 🏈Go Irish?
That was a good tune for pump gas, and a nice burn on the spark plug.
Steve: “Kyle’s going to show you guys how to read a spark plug.” (next scene) Kyle: “yep spark plug looks good…” ✍🏼👂🏼👀
Wow! What a gift, very kind
Like the editing steve .esp in video reminders upcoming videos
Great job Kyle, thinking outside the box
That 115 lobe separation must make great cylinder pressure. Low lift air.
Great job Kyle, and as always you to Steve
decades ago I got fed up with MSD ignition and my buddy that ran a Pro Mod convinced me to change my stuff to Mallory....I did and gained .05 and 3 MPH!
Ok so now you're gonna wanna take the guards off and chuck'em in the dumpster!🤣🤣🤣
It's nice to have a power fall off a little so when you shift you're rocking the rpm over the peak...very nice! Shift that big motor about 6500 and it'll do great. And with over 5" stroke I don't think you'd want to rev any harder just for longevity reasons. That motor is going to turn the car anything but loose!
Great job, Kyle!
Good job man, those numbers N/A blow my mind.
I often wonder about the spark efficiency at high RPM related to combustion pressure. Maybe the spark voltage is higher and cleaner with your setup? The low ends look the same in both configurations, but that top end is so much better.
One ot the theories is that a longer spark, or multiple spark CDI systems, is that with a single short spark the combustion starts at the spark and then the burn front progresses from that point as it's carried through the turbulent fuel/air mix, which may not be homogenised (the same everywhere), so some parts burn better and faster than others that don't quite have the right mix yet.
With a longer spark, the fuel is getting ignited for longer at that point, and so the flame front is "elongated" (stretched out) and this burns the fuel faster and, as it's carried around inside the cylinder, finds more of the unburned fuel and oxygen to burn that too.
One of the things that has been pretty universally reported is that less ignition timing is required.
Oh, the biggest improvements are reported on BIG engines, that usually need more time to burn the fuel, and engines that have poor cylinder head designs for turbulence, like Hemi's and other open chamber heads - or both! With these, it's believed there can be times when a very poor mixture may be present around the spark, and this can drastically slow, even prevent, ignition from occuring.
That poor ignition characteristic is why Chrysler developed the twin-plug heads for drag racing, and that are now found on their street engines, elbeit more for emissions with the latter..
Hmmm, so one bank of that 843 inch monster is about as big as my 427 street motor.....whoa.....
That stand is dope, but man too bad you didn't reconfigure the dyno to start the pull earlier with that big azz thing, it was dropping torque from the instant the pull started lol.... I wanna see if that thing made over 1k torque from the stab 😅
You need a vice from Fireball tool, makes some neet stuff.
Look at fireball tools for a Welding table!
Steve too bad they didn’t send you a free welding table!
That’s a cool engine stand
So I remember learning about this in a book I read from the 50's on engine theory. If I remember right then jist of it was that the longer the stroke, the longer the piston dwell @tdc (the point where the piston actually stops to change direction) and this increases dwell is the reason the larger cubic inch engines perform like they have a smaller cam than what we are used to experiencing with a smaller stroked version of the same engine.. Please correct me if I'm wrong just felt like sharing.
Also the more cubes you have to feed from the same heads it takes a ton more duration to do it.
The additional time at Tdc also smoothes out the overlap situation some I do believe
Nice Optimisation! Fall off curve gone.
Palmgren is the real deal vice good stuff
By chance did you point timing light the msd crank sensor. If the polarity is backwards it will run like crap at high rpm but ok at low rpm
Awesome engine. I know it’s not designed for mileage, but driving it conservatively around town and on the freeway I wonder what kind of mileage it would get with an overdrive? 5-7 mpg?
On drag week pulling the trailers loaded with gear it’s 12-13 if I’m recalling correctly.
I had similar cam in a 528 Ford
Odd... its like the msd box just lost its advance or something. Noise [like a lost filter capacitor]? What do they revert to on apparent trigger loss?
It comes down to the coil output current, say if u have a coil that puts out 40KV @ 100ma u wont get much of a arc and it will be ALOT colder than say 40KV @ 1A so what it means is the lower current output ignition has a weak spark which is how the spark gets blown out, creates miss fires, low HP
Steve Morris has a huge ci 844 and they say it's going to be a na engine. That 844 with 4 kits of nitrous would make that baby scream.
Sometimes the engineer learns something new from time to time!
Steve so you are telling us the smart coil are better then a msd box . You son did a great job with that. I looked to build a blower motor .
Look at them small ass runners and plenum… that’s why the power and dropping off so fast..
Does adding the magnet to the cam pulley cause any imbalance issues?
Pure real street racer. Buy that i mean Aussie street lol.
That thing be a weapon at the lights ;)
