    I love sponge filters I;ve even got one that has a built in pump. (sunsun brand). however I would like to direct you to a clip by prime time aquatics that explants why you don't need to rinse them out in tank water. I now rinse mine out in tap water and no harm done.

    • @footagemissing
      @footagemissing 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah that video and the science behind it was a revelation. How much easier is it to rinse under the pressure of regular tap water and it has next to no impact on the bacteria. Game changer.

      Thanks mate, im not familiar with that one ill check it out. I mean.. i do wash mine out under the tap but I didnt want to tell everyone else they could just in case

    Blake, with cichlids, would you have a recommendation of how many or how effective sponge filters are compared to the larger cannister filters? I had been using undergravel filters with power heads, then added a cannister filter in addition. Now in my 30 to 70 gallon tanks I'm starting with hob and sponge filters or just a sponge filter only. I just don't know which is more effective. One of my hob filters gets clogged really fast and overflows, which is really annoying. I just don't know how much the sponge filter does for water quality and breaking down waste.

    • @BlakesAquatics
      @BlakesAquatics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its only going to be as effective as you maintain it. The only difference between a canister, hob and a sponge is that the former use a pump to circulate the water. All of them are just moving water through a sponge.
      Theres millions of successful cichlid tanks worldwide running all combinations of the 3. I personally just have a large sponge filter in each corner of mine

    Do you have a rough rule of thumb for filter size per tank size when it comes to sponge filters?

    • @BlakesAquatics
      @BlakesAquatics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just got with the xy380 (large size) for tanks 2ft and above, xy180 for tanks below that. Just size kt to suit your tank space

    using fine sponge filters in my tanks and plantroots grow into them and there's shrimp all over them, both seem pretty good at keeping the filters clean for me at all times hahaha

    Soooo i havn't cleaned my betta sponge filter since end of november only plants is 2 java ferns am I a bad person? lol the water clarity is good the flow hasnt changed with the bubbles its a fine sponge filter it looks kinda dirty but nothing else seemed affected otherwise so i always just leave it alone.. Maybe i should clean it next water change lol...... I am still new to all this and this has been my well technically 2nd tank did the mistake of no research got a betta in too small of a tank and ended up doing a fish in cycle in his new 10g tank in november.

    Once my tanks have been established and plants thriving i use my sponge filters for moving water and filtering only. Beneficial bacteria grows everywhere. For this reason I clean my sponges out every two weeks. I use tap water also.
    I'm with Prime Time aquatics about washing under tap water. Works for me. Same with cannister filters. All sponges washed under tap water. Rest of the media is washed in used tank water.
