Do they make something like this that cuts a tree down in reverse?
Cuts it from the top down....?
you need to add a crosscut "snipper" saw to take down the tree in 6-12" long pieces.
Love the idea. However the limbs look more like twigs. What size of limb does it handle? And what happens if it hits something it cannot.
barely any limbs on those trees.. what would it perform like on a heavily limbed spruce? something tells me it might not cut it.
Spruce is one of the trees working best with the PATAS. Limbs up to a diameter of 4 cm are no problem, during prototype test we did even bigger ones. The patented geometry of the knives enables us to cut even heavily limbed trees. We will upload more videos, showing examples.

Great machine, it could be the solution for delimbing. Could you build it so that one man could handle it with an ATV or tractor? Some kind of quick mount on the front of the machine and the hydraulic unit in a trailer perhaps?
We are always developing new ideas and there surely will be advanced products to come. But so far, this is the solution to get on with delimbing with two operators needed.
Already working on ideas like that... :-)
Is there a problem with de-barking on bigger circumference trees?
No, there is the problem, that the machine just will not work properly. If the tree is just a bit too big, it might not cut all the branches. If the tree is way too big, the machine might turn or move in a way that is not wanted.

If this machine will prune NZ grown radiata pine then there is a huge market for it in New Zealand because we cant get the labour
We designed the machine PATAS for larch, pine and fir. We do not have experience in NZ but we think radiata should work, at least after some adaption. We start selling in 2019. First only in Germany, then European Union, then rest of the world. Price list and additional information should be ready by the end of the year. We'll return to you as soon as we got that done!

What is the purpose of a delimbing a tree like this, while it is still standing?
To get more sunlight in, make space for other trees/plants to grow and it doesn't harm the tree itself because they're only removing dead branches.

En Chile, los árboles más comunes para este trabajo son el Pinus Radiata. Desafortunadamente, el PATAS no es 100% adecuado para estos árboles. Estamos desarrollando una segunda máquina exactamente para la Radiata. Probablemente se presentará a finales de 2020.
Pero nos gustaría presentar las PATAS para eucalipto y teca ya este año en Sudamérica.
El Pinus Radiata es el árbol más común en Chile. Estamos desarrollando una segunda máquina para este fin. Hasta ahora sólo vendemos en Europa, pero el año que viene también queremos venir a Sudamérica.
You only practise it with european larch and pine! What is with spruce and douglas fir?
Many spruces can be processed with the PATAS. But we are currently developing another machine mainly for Douglas fir.

Have only tested in Europe so far. German spruce should be similar to your sitka and works fine. Want to start selling by January 2019.
@@advaligno Thank you. Looks like a good machine. The big question for me is will the sawmills pay more for knot free pruned timber. To date here at least they dont.
In Europe prices for knot free timber are tremendously higher than for the standard timber!
