B.B used to tour constantly, travelling North America in his custom made bus. And when he came to town (SWIDT) he'd have the bus park outside the record store where I worked and come in and do some shopping. He'd buy some music but he was there mostly for the movies. He was an avid film fan, and probably could have hosted a week on AMC. Fun fact: his favorite genre was Film Noir.
In later years, when his diabetes made it too difficult for him to be on his feet, we'd get him a stool and a beverage and he would sit by the cashiers while his assistant went around the store picking up CDs and DVDs. Then he would go through them: Got it, need it, got it, etc. The best part was when customers would come up to make their purchases and do a double take. And he would sign autographs and talk to everyone who approached him. Always gracious and charming. Then he would make his purchase (he got the "Blues Legend" discount), wave goodbye and say, "See you next year!". RIP B.B.

BB King gets more music ot of one note than most show offs get out one hundred notes played fast in the same space of time. He plays from deep down in his soul, uses dynamics [loud and soft], and sings and plays like he means it [which he does] with authority yet entertains from the highest level of joy to his audience, cajoles them to particpate. he reaches out to all people, note there are many skin colors in the audience, which is the coolect thing ever. We're all on this sinking ship together....

In the "Elvis" bio-pic from last year there's a scene with B.B.King, Rosetta Tharpe and Little Richard all playing in the same room together. Don't think that ever really happened, but I think they were trying to show some of Elvis' influences. I know B.B. had a radio show in the Memphis area in the early '50s that Elvis must have listened to.

B.B. favorite singer was Frank Sinatra, in his autobiography,he spoke about being a "Sinatra nut". Went to bed listening to Frank's classic album "IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS". Frank had arranged for B.B. to play at the main clubs in Las Vegas. B.B. died n his sleep from Vascular Dementia, his health problems high blood pressure and diabetes. He became a spokesman in the fight against the disease.

My late husband, who was a very dedicated Blues musician, always said that the Blues isn't sad, or isn't supposed to be. Anyone who plays it is announcing that "his woman done left and, while it's a bummer, he'll be just fine, give him a minute." I've always loved that description.

My oldest son (now 32) loved the blues in general and BB King in particular when he was a toddler. He and I had the unforgettable joy of seeing BB King live not just once but twice at a local venue here in Massachusetts when my boy was a pre-teen. This video may have been from that time, because BB King performed sitting down like this during the later years of his long performing career. This video immediately brought back my memories of those two fabulous shows with my boy.
I saw an interview with BB King where he said that a major reason for his distinctive call-and-response blues guitar style is that he was never able to play and sing at the same time. He transformed what might have been an obstacle for a different musician into his distinctive and instantly recognizable trademark sound.

As a trained guitarist I always found Blues artistry fascinating and extremely difficult to master. It is a feel and heart art form. I have played several different types of music and I was initially classically trained. I fell in love with Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King when I began to explore this musical form back in the 70 s. These two men sent me on a journey that also introduced me to the likes of Rosetta Thorpe which as a female guitarist was so exciting. These are my top three blues specialists. Happy to see you representing them on your show. Nothing better than a Blues guitar singing to get you going in the morning. Keep it going children. All my admiration. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

There are so many great guitarists, spanning many many styles. For sound and style, some of my favorites are Jimmy Page (Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Firm), Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow), Eric Clapton (Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes), BB King, Elmore James, Pete Townshend (The Who), Tom Scholz (Boston), Steve Howe (Yes, Asia), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne), Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young (AC/DC), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), John Sykes (Thin Lizzie, Whitesnake, Blue Murder), Peter Frampton, Steve Marriott (Small Faces, Humble Pie), Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones), Jeff Beck and so many more!
For technique, I would look more toward the world of jazz, which would include John McLaughlin, Alan Holdsworth, Al DiMeola, and many more.
There are also many great artists of the classical and flamenco traditions.

Saw BB and Baby Blue Bland together for one night only at the Circle Lounge in San Francisco Jan 1981. The theater only seated 150 people and was configured in a circle, thus "Circle Lounge" and the stage revolved very slowly so matter where you were seated you got a great view. And you were very close to the stage. What was really cool was right before the night was over he invited the whole audience back to the Holiday Inn they were staying at for an after concert buffett. Absolutely the best live performance I have yet been to. And my fiancé was with me and was pregnant with my oldest daughter at the time and she had my daughter later that morning. My daughter still says BB is her favorite performer. Maybe she heard him while relaxing in her mom's belly.

A friend of mine, the guitar player in my band, got to spend some time with him after his performance. Matt (my friend) was walking back stage and BB opened the door and saw him and invited him to help him eat a mess of ribs since the rest of his band and crew had already left. For his time, and had he lived beyond 1961, Eddie Cochran. He was also the first artist to understand mixing, he played every instrument on Summertime Blues, C'mon Everybody etc. Listen to Milkcow Blues Boogie to realise just what a fantastic guitarist he was in the late 50's. I spoke to Joe Brown (a British rocker who toured with Eddie when he visited and subsequently died here in the UK), and Joe said that he was undoubtedly the best string man he ever played alongside, and he told me this when he was still performing in the 80's.

They play together in their own band called Tedeschi Trucks band. His name is Derek Trucks. He is an amazing guitarist. Played with the Allman Brothers band. Him and Susan were big friends of B.B. Toured with him before he died. A lot of videos of them together on you tube. They are a 12 piece band with 2 drummers, horns, backup singers. They are the most amazing live band anywhere. There are to many, certainly SRV is my Texas boy! Never got to see him! In the mid 70's I heard a song that changed my live forever and that was Thrill Is Gone. I had the great fortune to see BB four times. So for me it's BB,SRV, neck and neck. But theres Buddy G, Joe B, Gary Moore and many others close behind like Jeff H, Albert and Freddie King, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, RoryG, Peter Green from the original Fleetwood Mac and so many more. So Blues are my first love from all the genre's. So a Big Texas Thanks for the reaction

I was lucky enough to get to see B.B. King live just about 5 years prior to his passing. Still one of the most significant concerts I've been to. He had Susan Tedeschi and The Fabulous Thunderbirds (post Jimmie Vaughan.. but still good) opening for him. Such a great night of blues! Please do more Susan Tedeschi and also check out some of Jimmie Vaughan's stuff.

There’s a beautiful “duel” between B.B. King and MY GOAT, Gary Moore, on “The Thrill is gone” in a small club in London in 1992, just before Gary started his tour, with a very amused and slick B.B.!

There’s B.B. King album called Duces Wild where he does duets with different artists like Van Morrison, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt, Dr John, Eric Clapton, etc. “Baby I Love You” with Bonnie Raitt is a great one, and “There Must Be A Better World Somewhere” with Dr John is another good one.

BB King said that Peter Green gave him the chills.
Peter led the original Blues version of Fleetwood Mac he wrote "Black Magic Woman" that Santana later covered.
Listen to "Need your love so bad" for some great blues and if you want to sit outside and watch the sky & trees find his instrumental 'Albatross"
