    In Afghanistan, springtime starts with a bang as it marks the start of the "fighting season" between the Taliban and Afghan security forces. For the first time in 12 years, the Afghan National Army (ANA) has to operate without their American allies as US troops withdraw. VICE News' Gelareh Kiazand travels to Kandahar to see how the ANA, the police, and ordinary Afghans are dealing with this turning point in a very long war.

      That doesn’t even make sense. The French and British fought like absolute hell for six weeks and were completely outmatched by German military superiority. And you’re forgetting that literally most of Europe surrendered to the Germans just as fast if not faster. Denmark surrendered in a few hours. And if the British hadn’t been surrounded by water, they would have been rolled over too.

    • @tSp289
      @tSp289 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      JC545X39 Well, it usually just depends where you point it and how you set the fuzes. AAA is anti aircraft artillery, usually used with timed charges so the shells explode in the air at a set range (flak) or by proximity. Modern point defences are usually not directly controlled by a gunner, because computers do a better job of tracking fast targets like jets and missiles, but then much of the world can't afford that kind of tech so you get older AAA guns like this, which are just as effective at blasting things on the ground.

    To be fair, the 205th Corps featured in this video defended Kandahar to literally the last bullet - most of the soldiers didn’t run, but the Corps ability to carry on was systemically ground down after months of non-stop, heavy fighting with the Taliban.
    They received minimal support from the Afghan government - no ammunition or equipment resupply, token reinforcements and they were starving by the end.
    Those who weren’t killed surrendered after their commanders negotiated a deal with the Taliban to let their men go home.
    People in the comments section of this video should show them some respect.
    Brave and determined warriors ultimately betrayed by their own Government.
    It’s sad. Really sad.

    More than any other observation I've had viewing this video is that the lady journalist wasn't buying the phony bullshit paraded out by the ranking officer in every venue she visited. Vice just doesn't normally look at any situation with the necessary dose of suspicion that I have seen posted online. Well good on Vice, and on the journalist, for looking beyond the first layer.
    That being said, the Afghan Nat'l Army clearly remembered nothing about military bearing, command presence, self-discipline, nor any other essential part of being a good member of a team oriented military organization. They are literally doomed to repeat the past in endless cycles of violence and winter weather.

This Army is perfectly capable of fighting the Taliban, while the foundations of a new Army are being laid out.     I see a lot of bad-mouthing towards the ANA forces and security forces saying how weak they were and how they fell so easily, so before insulting people you know next to nothing about;
    1. The Afghan military doctrine was based on the American model, which means it relied heavily on air support, and as you might have figured out by yourself, the Afghan Airforce does not even start to compare with the US Airforce (equipment, training, budget, etc.). The US probably realised this at some point and decided to cut out most of their air support for Afghan forces in an attempt to not make them reliant on heavy US air support. This change came abruptly, and an army doctrine that fundamentally relies on heavy air support to suddenly receive very minimal air support is far from optimal, this caused morale among the common soldiers to plummet because now they were basically on equal grounds with the Taliban, if not even on lower ground because at least the Taliban had the element of surprise, you can imagine the anxiety of common soldiers at lets say a checkpoint just waiting for the inevitable Taliban hit-and-runs, most of them were no more than sitting ducks when the Taliban knew exactly where and when to strike.
    2. As I said previously, the common soldiers are the ones most heavily affected by low morale, and coincidentally the common soldier also makes up the majority of the ANA, please keep in mind when you judge these people that most of them have taken this job that puts their lives at risk just so they can feed their families (their salaries ranged around $100-300, and a lot of the times they were not paid their salaries for months, some of them never even got paid), and most of them joined at a time when it looked like the US was committed to not letting the Taliban take power. When the war suddenly takes such a turn where fighting means almost certain death (I know that the ANA had a number advantage over the Taliban, but the leadership was so atrocious that the ANA soldiers holding checkpoints, towns, etc. were basically just sitting ducks), why would they take that risk as their families only breadwinners? If they die then the family they leave behind is also as good as dead.
    3. The ANA Commando Corps only made up ~6-7% of the ANA, but they conducted ~80% of the fighting, these are the guys that joined the war to actually fight for their country (of course there were common ANA soldiers that joined the war just to fight as well, but again their leadership was garbage and most of the time they were used to make places of importance seem harder to capture than they actually were, it was hard for the common ANA soldiers to do much with the bad communication from leadership and the severely different mindsets of the soldiers present). The Commandos fought very well, but even with the number advantage the forces were spread out so thinly over all of Afghanistan that the Taliban could pick and choose where to strike and with how many insurgents, it does not matter if the ANA had a number advantage when they are spread out across all of Afghanistan (now to make this large thinly spread force even less efficient of course the effective leadership was non-existent so the forces could never group up and win overwhelming victories), but this is where we get to our final and most important point as to why Afghanistan fell so quickly to the taliban.
    4. All branches of the ANA were told to lay down arms and NOT fight the taliban, there are videos online of some soldiers screaming, crying, pleading at their leaders to not give up, and most of the Commandos went on fighting even after the government fell. Why blame the soldiers when the leadership came out directly and ordered them to lay down arms?? Imagine how the soldiers must have felt, the situation must have already felt hopeless, but when your superiors, the people supposed to lead you to victory betrays you, what are you supposed to do?
    I want to add that there are plenty of great generals in the ANA, but it doesn't matter when the government at the top is already corrupt. Please don't diss the common Afghan soldiers nor any other branch of the ANA or the security forces without knowing anything about what happened internally in Afghanistan itself. Most of you are just going by keywords you hear from the media (most notably US media), the situation is much more complex than that. Thank you. Also, I'm sure there are some terms I'm using wrong, but hopefully the message is still understandable.

    • @-zr
      @-zr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@photonride8915 Did you even read the whole thing? Also, the soldiers who fled to neighbouring countries (mainly Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) are soldiers of Tajik and Uzbek ethnicities (also Hazaras, but they have no country to flee to except for Afghanistan itself, where they are hunted by the Taliban just for their ethnicity), if you were familiar with the pre-existing ethnic tensions in Afghanistan you would not look at this situation the way you currently do. IF those soldiers were to remain in Afghanistan, even after the leadership betrayed them, what do you think would happen when a large group of armed soldiers are left to themselves? We don't need more armed groups that act independently in Afghanistan. In the end leaving and avoiding persecution is the best for them and their families, anything that doesn't involve death and war is the best for Afghanistan currently until a force strong enough to swiftly remove the Taliban and actually stay in power comes along.

    • @photonride8915
      @photonride8915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @ApplePie Yes, I did read the entire thing but I think you are just missing the point. You gave us a few interesting and points on why ANA wouldn't have faired in a fight against the Taliban as well as they might have thought earlier and why did they run, but that all is beside the point. You could say that running and saving yourself is always the best option for any soldier that is about to face a tough war with a strong adversary, but most don't. I bet they didn't run from cashing those checks for $100-300 (above the average salary in Afghanistan) or flexing in the US bought kit. And I am not trying to sound like a tough guy, because I'm not. I don't think I could ever fight in a war. But guess what? That's exactly why I'm in digital marketing and not the military.

    • @-zr
      @-zr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@photonride8915 I can get behind some of what you are saying, but then again you are the one missing what I'm trying to convey. They soldiers didn't flee simply because they were facing a strong adversary, the people of Afghanistan have fought and won against much stronger opponents, the point here is that the effective leadership of the ANA essentially just crumbled and disappeared leaving the soldiers with the final message to 'lay down arms'. As both you and I mentioned, the common ANA soldier most likely joined for the pay (you said they earned above average salary, it is actually a pretty average salary when you take into consideration that the average salary in Afghanistan ranges from $100-$250, and don't forget that most of these soldiers never even got paid, you would be lucky to receive even half of the salary you deserve), their morale was as low as could be, and with no leadership to guide or coordinate them why would the common soldier still fight? If they were to get captured by the taliban we both know what those poor souls would have to go through.
      The Commando Corps however did not flee, they were/are the ANA's cream of the crop, even after the government fled they fought, after the fall of Kabul they still fought. They later coordinated meeting points and merged with other resistance fighters (the Northern Alliance in Panjshir for example consisted of many Commandos before it fell due to Pakistan providing the taliban with air support). I haven't been following the situation in Afghanistan lately because it's just been making me sad, so I can't comment on how the Northern Alliance and other resistance groups are faring.

    I wish I had been watching this situation develop over the years. It is easy to become complacent to all the issues in the world due to lack of time to watch all the news stories, and get all the various perspectives. It's hard enough to keep up with day-to-day work and family time, let alone be concerned with things that are happening in the middle east. But it is interesting to study the whole situation and see how this all unfolded.
    One perspective I heard is that perhaps the U.S. could have set up a permanent military installation in Afghanistan the same way we have bases in Germany, Japan, Korea, etc.
