Aside from the outstanding visuals in this episode, let's acknowledge the empathic music that superbly underlined the emotions of this experience. Hardly an episode goes by without careful attention to this important feature of the storytelling.
I was thinking the same thing!
I find the music a little heavy handed at times. The visuals speak for themselves. Sometimes less is more. : )
Let's be honest. Extremely lovely series. Visuals, hard work diy, planning, executing, north trip and many more to come. But music is so bad. No offence, but even gifted cannot be gifted everywhere 💛 keep going forward Dan and Kika, dont pay attention to grumpy old man 😀
@@esinta8739 I think they are limited by the royalty-free music selection, but if there is one thing that always puts me off on virtually every sailing channel is background music. Just because something speaks to you personally doesn't mean your viewers will like it. I think they would be better off with something almost imperceptible.
Always exceptional choices to visuals and music and lighting!
Those five birds flying in formation was the coolest thing you managed to capture, well done,
15:49
I think they were puffins?
Also 16:00 and on for 20 seconds? Are you kidding with the flyby catching the birds flying by Uma? Just an incredibly beautiful shot!
The drone footage was amazing. The contrasting sky and flying with the birds…
That darkening sky, filmed with the birds winging by…grabbed me. Sadness was well captured. Juxtapositional videography demonstrates your unique selves.
Another beautiful moment.
It seems that’s all I ever say but nobody does
This for people like us to watch for free nobody.
You both are beautiful people please keep bringing
Us more.
Be safe where ever you go.
Thank you
One of the most stunning drone shots I’ve ever seen. Beautiful and the music was sublime.
The shot at 16:00 with the birds passing in front of the boat and the super dramatic blueish sky right above the mast 😍
Okay, I'm just going to come right out and say it. Wow. Just wow. How fortunate are we to have you share your incredible journey with us through the gifts of your incredible cinematography and storytelling skills. Absent your willingness to become vulnerable and share these experiences with us we'd miss out on the opportunity to witness some epic places. Thank you for sharing these glimpses of your lives with us. We are blessed to be able to follow your journey and cheer for you along the way.
I might have mentioned before here, (I mentioned it in a comment somewhere on TH-cam before), but I’m amazed watching the sailing channels at the regulars who spend so much time at sea and are still subject to sea sickness. Props for discussing it and it’s why I like your channel for the unvarnished honest look you guys always provide.
I’ve been on large cruise ships. But most of the other times I’ve spent on a boat was landing on Naval Ships in the UH1 and then UH60. Touch and goes, not too bad. But if you were working with the crew letting them practice chaining you down and undoing chains, or shutting down for chow like we were invited to on a fast frigate one trip, the rolling motion of the deck can really screw with you. I got pretty close to the mark climbing back in the cockpit and looking down to read the checklist running up to depart after a meal with the ships Captain once. So, I’m pretty sure I’d be a basket case for a while on a small boat. But you old hands at it… I guess being a land lubber it’s just hard to imagine you not getting cast iron tummies out of necessity over the years you’ve been at sea.
Anyhoo, love the commentary. Stick with the honest broker take on all your travels and stops without sugarcoating your feelings and your followers will continue to respect your channel I think. Blessing and safe travels.
You still gotta love Iceland. Been there many times. Always made good memories there. The people are special.
Love the colors! Foggy, Rainy, cloudy is so beautifully serene and zazen.
I cannot begin to imagine your disappointment and I thank you for sharing that. BUT, I am overwhelmed by the beauty of the vide overall: music, scenery, overall communication of your feeling. So … good for me!
100% agree "how sad" Dan. You know Fernie area of BC? Same same. Twenty years ago I found a most lovely, quiet, semi-isolated hotspring with bathtub pools cut deep into the rock by the old people. It was glorious soaking there as the snow came down. Went back the next year and a company had grabbed all the water. Now you have to pay, the view of gigantic mountains across the plain is obstructed, its crowded, and those bathtub sized pools are dry and oh, how very sad. Never mind! Sail on!
Thank you, Kika and Dan, for calming an old grandmother’s heart this morning with the brisk waters and rains in your posts. The picturesque filming allow my mind to escape the perils of this world. For a short period of time I get to imagine myself on an youthful excursion with you brilliantly talented sailors. Me, a twice retired master reading teacher, favored the air, as I traveled during my tour as an USAF Strategic Air Command Veteran before teaching. My older brother did his stretch in the USA Navy. Be forever blessed, healthy, prosperous, energetic, safe and full of joyous laughter! 💞👵🏽💞
The drone shots were really beautiful. I do understand the disappointment finding the new construction ruining the somewhat secret ho tub spot. I find that all the spots I’ve loved in the past are being ruined by those who find them and publish in some damn tourist guide. And the world becomes smaller everyday with more people searching for private spots. You guys have been so blessed with the time spent sailing thus far. I love the beautiful edits Kikka. I hope you always have avocados onboard 🤗
or influencers on youtube ruining it (aka uma)
I get what your saying yet the other side is they show the beauty of the world to those who can't travel or will never get the the chance. Who's right? Idk it's a two edge sword.
@@kevin3434343434 you sound like a entitled, jealous dick, Kevin. If you were actually paying attention and not just stuck up your own ass you might realize that the specific location of these places that you are jealous (but too lazy) get to have not actually been revealed.
@@kevin3434343434 I don't think that the typical Uma follower is interested in the "Disneyland" type of tourism...
@@marcryvon You can tell Dan is a bit of a snob and I like him for it. : )
Thank you for all of your beautiful moments..sad, happy, solitude, even all of the uncertainties . You both are my eyes of the world.. from the words that you use, and the way you film the events as they unfold. Your technical skills from the beginning of your journey up to this moment.. are so inspiring.. y'all are amazing.. God has lead you well.. Keep having fun and a tender heart.
Kenneth Liggon
At first I was put off by the title. But after watching i get what Dan's feeling was. A set goal not realized. I always appreciate yalls honesty and personal perspective. Even when it's bot what you imagined.
Come back to BC and AK and I can personally show you over a dozen hots springs where you can anchor right in front. No need to travel so far. Our boat Arktika is in northern Iceland with a Juho and Sohvi from @AlluringArctic. We will join them this Summer and head to Greenland. Stay well.
You two are just so much fun. Thank you for sharing your escapades, geography and history I've so many beautiful places. I probably never would have known how colorful Iceland is !
No disappointment on this end - fantastic camera work! Beautiful scenery!!
Our imaginations are both a blessing and a curse, but without them we would be nothing.
Undoubtedly in the grand scheme you are in the positive column so accept a single loss and persevere.
I will wait patiently for next week's Uma joy.
You guys are amazing film makers. The quality of the videos is just amazing.
Two kids in a boat alone by themselves, showing us parts of the world on a sailing perspective we could only dream experiencing. They make the script, act it, film it, and edit it in a way, others with an exponentially bigger budget and credentials could never do.
Often get myself lost in the images and sound... You guys are extremely talented in multiple ways.
Thank you and Don't Stop!
Holy shit! You guys are awesome videographers. That drone pan around the boat with the birds in the foreground was award-worthy. So beautiful. Felt so bad about the hot spring though. I feel for you both but Iceland is still so beautiful.
You guys get the best shots of how multicolored, dynamic, and ever changing the ocean is. It's super impressive and I really appreciate it.
Thank you for sharing your feelings from that moment! I'm living this through both of you, and when Dan was sad, I was sad for you! When Dan said I want to pet a sheep, I smiled, maybe a little laugh. The scenery was beautiful and loved the birds flying. Thank you for sharing your adventures and journey! The videos are awesome, the editing and music spot on! Thank you for bringing me along!
Beautifully shot. I felt Dans sadness all the way over in Australia
If I had waited that long to see a place then I would still have jumped in and experienced the vibe.. what an amazing journey though!! Cannot wait to do what you guys are doing!!
Not every experience is idyllic. Adding footage about some of your disappointment moments is one thing that adds to the enjoyment of your videos - we are there with you. Otherwise we might as well just watch an Iceland travel log!
Dan, I feel with you. - The light and dramatic sky are magically beautiful, amazingly stunning images. Thanks.
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your spirit! You’re both inspirational people I often talk about with friends and family.
Thank you for sharing your journey, your such a blessing and a well needed distraction from what's happening in the of the world right now thank you so much 👍
The first time we've ever seen your hair blow in the wind. Crazy windy. Bummer about the hot springs. Love your videography.
I’m falling asleep wake me up when it’s over
O.M.G! The drone work for this site took my breath away❣️ Indescribable BEAUTY❣️ AWE-INSPIRING, and beautifully coordinated with the background music. Thank you so much for sharing this part of your lives. You are an awesome couple! Adorable!
Just missing the beer. My grandmother went to Ireland probably 40+ years ago. It is definitely on my bucket list of things to do to honor her memory. I look forward to your other adventures. My grandmother made a special trip t the blue lagoon. Hopefully you all got to go there. It is touristy….. but. Even in pictures staggeringly pretty. Quick message to the universe. “Miss you grandma”.
Be grateful, Dan, that you have learned young one of life's most painful lessons: the only thing that is certain is change.
I’ve been watching your adventures for years and this is the first time I’ve seen Dan sad. Pouting Dan is just as awesome as happy, yoga Dan. Thanks for taking us along.
While your hot springs journey was a disappointment, for us, the LIGHT in this video is unreal. Your cinematography is my favorite thing about your channel. Beautiful work.
I'm sitting in the thaw of a Midwest ice storm watching, I understand the frustration, please understand that you are giving the world JOY every week, and this week some of the most beautiful photos of a sail boat with the most striking back drop on the planet.
I thank you for taking the chances you take because you are greatly rewarded, you share your finds. Thank you
The quality of light and your drone cinematography are nothing short of spectacular. I’m sad with you Dan that you didn’t get your hot springs on the beach experience. It would have been epic. Thank you for bringing us along on your wonderful adventures. The places you have visited are so amazing and you are both such wonderful company.
I'm 63 now and can tell you that it's not just Iceland, it's everywhere. There are cool little places where my family vacationed here in Texas back in the early to mid-60's that no longer exist. Great memories that can't be revisited because those locations were sold off and developed for tourism $$$ long ago. It's the way of the world, and you just have to look further afield to find them - which you two are doing a pretty good job at! That anchorage was still pretty awesome, so hope you cracked open a beer anyway while you were there. Cheers!
Few people have remarked that very fact. Humanity has been exceedingly successful at destroying everything. Pity that Covid stopped doing its destructive path.. May be not, but you get the gist! Don't know what can be done... Many of my favourite spots do not exist anymore. I am 73yo.....Yep!
@12:30 - Dan's inner child on view for us all. I say that with empathy. I too would be let down. Thanks for sharing!
I can imagine that you were disappointed with the hot spring. As I lived in Iceland before, I know that there are literally hundreds of other hot springs all around the country, also near the coast and in the fjords. Probably over 95% are not touristy at all and hard to find. Not to criticize, but maybe you should have asked some locals beforehand about the best spots. I know there are many hidden gems and locals don't want to reveal them all in public, just so they don't become touristy. There are definitely some in Hvalfjörður. Is that where you went to?
I totally agree. I was going to say that there are lots of remote springs. I’m disappointed in them, not Iceland. Not everything is accessible by boat. You have to get in a vehicle & explore. Nothing wrong with that.
Keep in mind that this is one single story sharing an honest emotion that we had at that particular time. For a while We had our eye on that spot which used to be a hidden gem. So There was no point denying that we were sad about it. There are many other experiences we haven’t yet shared in Iceland.
@@SailingUma yes there are many chapters to a story…
@@SailingUma as an Icelander I can tell you that you are not the only ones sad about this hot spring to be closed to public.
It’s around two years since this place was closed for public and the hot water was cut off. The owner is a millionaire that owned the company WOW AIR that is bankrupt today.
This is being built up as a summerhouse land now unfortunately.
You missed a much more remote and isolated hot spring in Westfjords, it is quite close to the place you anchored when arriving in westfjords .but if you ever comeback I will tell you where this place is. There are very few people that go there because of its location.
I hope you Will find a good hot spring to enjoy, I live abroad today, so I really miss the weekends I used to go chill in the nature and the hot springs.
@@claudettep212 Kind of harsh, I think. They had a plan, and a soon to be resort ruined it. That was the total point of this video. Be nice.
Much enjoyed this. Especially the 360 track around Uma and Dan jumping to get into the lighthouse shot. Always fun. Class🍷🍷
I loved the way Kika choreographed the birds flying in formation along with the drone! Amazing how they performed the routine on the first take! They were so professional how they didn't even look at the drone or let it affect their performance. Hard to find well trained birds up in Iceland! Another fine video story.
So sorry about no hot springs but what a stunning anchorage!
You should do it in BC one day. I know your Canadian.Bishop bay is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.I’ve had a beer in a hot spring and been able to see the boat.Ther is also a hot spring near Bela Coola that you could see your boat from. And no people
The first thing that sprung to my mind was the (Joni Mitchell?) song that included the phrase "The day paradise put up a parking lot".
Dan, remember YOU are a tourist too, kinda showed the spoiled little boy today, lol…”keeps disappointing us?” You must have been in a funk. As usual, beautiful shots of the charming capital city and anchorage, pouting aside. 😒
So sorry you were unable to ck the box off for your Island Wish. You did as always keep it real, thank you for showing us the beautiful views and drone shots. We as always enjoy the photography efforts you take to allow us to feel as though we are there with you. Hopefully you will be heading a little farther south and be able to get out of the heavy foul weather gear. As always, we wish you fair winds and following seas.,💞💞
So sad Daniel. I hope you feel better soon. You both deserve some nice hot springs.
Some of the best drone footage on TH-cam. The photography on this channel has been taken to a different level. Thank you. I have been to Iceland also and enjoyed secluded hot spa springs.
There are now twice as many people on this planet as when I was born. The tremendous amount of things have been lost along the way. I just didn’t think I would see one example on a remote part of Iceland. I should have known better. Condolences to our blue marble. Thanks for the video, sad as this is. Smooth sailing guys.
The construction is good for the pockets of the ppl living in the area. Before people would at best spend there money in a gas station close by. Even though it might not satisfy this man, its going to bring money and work to the smaller community’s close by
Good show Kraft Kaptian Kika and Dock Deckhand Dan.✅
Unfortunately, before long that place you found will have a paved Highway going to it with an unfinished hotel that had hoped to exploit the hot springs but never had the funds to finish it, like you’ve seen down in the Islands several times. 😬😢
Eyeblowing shots of islandic nature...woaw...thank you !
Omg I’ve never seen Dan so sad. He’s usually so upbeat and positive no matter what’s going on. I guess we’re all entitled to our one thing.
Amazing. Such a picturesque production. from being seasick to the dramatic sky. Again amazing. Jim
Greetings from Iceland. Love your videos!
You two do a fantastic channel and outstanding footage. Thank you both for sharing. 🙏😊❤️Safe journeys and God bless.
Well Dan guess you'll have to sail Uma home to BC and park her in front of some of our marine hotsprings, especially hotsprings Island in the gwaii
I cannot think of something to say, but sorry to hear the disappointment in the spring. Some have written, there are hundreds of springs in Iceland, but none have UMA in its view. I understand. Keep it up!
Yeah Dan, I feel your pain. Stunning scenery though and just beautiful footage and overall production.
Love what you’re doing and how you do it, truly inspirational.
Outstanding drone shot of Uma with the birds in the shot throughout. Wow.
I always love your cinematic drone footage!
If you sail to volcanic New Zealand , there is a place on the Coromandel peninsula called hot water beach.
You can simply dig a hole in the sand just above sea level and it will fill with geothermally heated water..😁
That sounds awesome!
Swing by Vancouver Island. There is a hot spring near the ocean (on the pacific side). Maybe a few further north too.
I honestly feel bad for you. I've had similar things happen to me and I understand how it feels. It sucks that so many of the beautiful places are becoming commercialized.
But there are still wild and beautiful places out there and you e seen so many more than most. So, if you can, comfort yourself with that. The best so many of us can do is explore the world vicariously through the two of you.
By the way, thanks for that. I look forward to every video.
Wow those shots are just beautiful!!
Dan, maybe you can make up for the missed opportunity if and when you sail to the mediterranean island of Vulcano. There is a short stretch of beach, where hot vapours from fumaroles are heating up the beach itself and the seawater in front of it. There is also a hot mudbath a few meters from the beach. Quite a touristy place, but at night, particularly off-season, you might have most of the water for yourself. It was fun to sit directly above the vapour outlets in the warm seawater and watch the night sky, almost like in a whirlpool or on top of a giant bottle of sparkling water - quite smelly though. Water is hottest at low tide and you should be able to find a place to anchor not far away, if I remember it correctly. It's now some 30 years that I was there last time... .
Yeah. Similar experience. After years of Iceland anticipation many of my experiences there were thwarted or dampened by the perplexing influx of (other) tourists. Fortunately we were able to get to some great remote areas and hot springs that others could not get to because we were on bikes. The reality of a built up anticipation can certainly be soul crushing. The next time I make it to Iceland will be by boat next year; sad to know that particular hot pot is no longer. "Progress"...
I used to live in Reykjavik and I loved it there!
I love the drone footage, the great commentary, and the adventure of exploring the island. I'm sorry for Dan that the tub wasn't hot as that looked like the perfect place to drink a beer while overlook Uma at anchor. Here's to better adventure opportunities and less disappointment in the future!
Its possible that God helps people get to a place where they come face to face with the difference between the blessings God provides and our desires so we can appreciate that difference . I believe you are blessed and it is wonderful that you share that blessing. The greatness of your blessings in contrast to your disappointment even with your minimalist expectations were a testimony in this video. Thank you again
Not sure if you heard but Russian Yacht Ragnor was boarded by officers and being held suspected of severing the fiber cable for svalbard. Thought of your trip up there and when you mentioned the cable being cut.
Randomly been to Iceland loads as a friend worked there. I was expecting some disappointment from you guys. It was SO commercialised on my last visit was shocked.
The colours make a great backdrop to the non-hot-pool, fab photography.
Thank you! ♥️
Dan, you can add a solar heated hot tub off the stern and park where you like. Not that I've seen any plans. Or, fill the dingy with hot water.
Gutted you've found the hot spring cold. We spent a week in Iceland in Sept 18, fantastic country but we didn't do any hot springs , as you say too touristy.....even though we were tourists lol. It's been interesting reading the Icelandic locals knowledge on here that there are little known hot springs that are kept quiet so that tourists don't ruin them. That's the whole point of being a local , knowing special places and keeping them for the locals. I'm sure you've long left Iceland by now but the gravel F roads that criss cross the island are truly amazing, real wilderness and in September hardly anyone on them , you need a 4x4. But hey what a stunning anchorage.
Beautiful , the twins and music , good winds !
You need to come back to your homeland Dan. There are several oceanside hot springs along BCs coast. Some are fairly remote, where you can sit all alone and watch your boat swing on the hook :)
it sounds like we are going to make it to BC on Uma and we will think to ourselves "why didn't we start here 10 years ago " 😂
This sets a new bar for first world problems.
Wow Uma looking epic on the finale shots of the video worth making a wall hanging for sure love you guys Rock on your awesome .
Hi to you both, as an ex seaman i cannot help but smile (although I shouldn’t ) that full time cruising yachties get seasick after a couple of days alongside, although you are in good company,it is well known that Horatio Nelson suffered from the same problem.enjoy your journey.thank you for taking me with you.the last time I was in Icelandic waters was in a trawler at Christmas 1971 .snow and gales aplenty.cheers Roly 🇬🇧.
There's always the geothermal beach right by the airport in Reykjavik. It's not a natural hot spring, but I always go when I'm in Iceland. It's a beautiful place to spend a few hours, any time of year.
Let me just say, you guys are a lot of fun. Your production skills are really top notch. I love your music, drone shots, and overall production. If making these videos is enough to sustain you guys, I'm gonna go Chris Farley on you guys and say that is ....awesome!
I made a comment a week or so ago about “what’s the goal” and you responded. This episode was incredible! Absolutely captures the essence of Iceland. Thank you so much and keep doing what you do!
I completely get the disappointments, the drone shots were gorgeous, hopefully, you'll find what you are seeking. Keep seeking for warmth and comfort, and it will just show up when you don't create expectations.
Amazing footage. All the rain and clouds reminds me when I lived on Kodiak Island
Nice drone work at 16:00, following the title flock of birds. Thank you again for letting me come on your journeys. I almost feel like I should get an Iceland patch for my backpack. almost. because of you. Thank you.
Come to Southeast Alaska, I can point you to a few remote hot springs you can anchor in front and enjoy!
Your videos are great! Thank you!
Great post Dan and Kika. Much love and care and blessings to you two. 🌞🌴⛵💛🥰
Killer flying with the drone in this one! No hot springs, but it was real pretty!
This last one was Probably our best drone shot ever. The birds could not have performed any better 😹
I still think that's a beautiful spot. Thank you for taking me there with you.
Hey Dan.....right in your own backyard in Canada is Bishop hot springs just up the inside passage in BC and you can sit in it and watch your boat.. One of the best in the world that I enjoyed in my trips from Seattle to Alaska. Come check it out and I'll buy you a beer.
The highs and lows of adventuring. Thanks for sharing colorful and artistic Reykjavik. Images of things I haven’t seen before. Plus all the avocados you can carry !!! Surly you found a hot bath in a therapeutic natural spring somewhere in Iceland 🇮🇸 before sailing away ; )
Iceland is a nice spot I was there in 2018 with my wife and we did experience that wind. Infact we also walked by wher Uma was . Thanks guys, take care .
Awww, Dan! I was hoping you knew Jewels from YT All Things Iceland. Might have been some enjoyable non tourist adventure. I saw one of your videos for the first time about two weeks ago and have spent every possible minute watching them since. Fabulous! I knew nothing about boats, sailing, Norway, etc. I now know what a ‘halyard’ is although I never touch one. Fascinating adventure!!! Videos are like watching TV documentaries. Thanks
Iceland is my favourite place on earth. My inner viking was singing to this video,. One thing we always remember being told - You will experience every season and every weather on every day in Iceland :-)
