Nice work Michael, as my dear departed dad used to say, you can’t beat a light tap with a heavy hammer and if it won’t move, get a bigger hammer 😁

The scale reads in pounds and ounces, not pounds and decimal pounds.

I wonder if that split and bulged swingarm has had water in it at some point that's frozen. You see similar damage on farm gates they lost the plastic cap off the top of. I think it was the sealed side designed for a chain oiler? If it was and it got water in, frost would peel it open like a bannanna skin with little effort.

I agree totally. Looks just like a water pipe that has frozen and split open. Lots of force in water when it freezes. I’ve seen small aircraft, chrome moly frame tubes with similar damage as well.

Great episode, I have an Anglian frame and Triumph 3TA engine (with the wide ratio box) in the shed for a trials project. So I am learning a lot of usefull stuff from your project.

Great stuff, proof if needed that in general people in the old bike world are the best.

My first offroader was Greeves Challenger which had the same frame with a Villiers 250. Was a bitch to start but once running there wasnt much that could keep up.

Your weighing is a bit off Mike. The scale reads pounds and ounces, you were reading it like a decimal, 5.12 is 5 pounds and 12 ounces, not 5.12 pounds. Banana forks might in fact be heavier. Keep up the good work 👍

I was arguing with you as you did your weighing, Michael, but others have covered your ‘weighing aberration’ so I’ll keep quiet! I’m not surprised the forks are light, though, as the tubing is large diameter but very thin tube. Strength in the diameter rather than the amount of metal. Wonder what on earth has happened to that rear fork, though. Real trauma. Am loving this series, as I always fancied a Greeves. Love the ISDT models. Les in Chester 🇬🇧

God bless you for using the correct name for a split pin. I can scream at the TV when the Americans say cotter pin

I can see you wrestling with the idea of using the banana forks, so I thought I would weigh in. I am a larger rider and always had trouble with downhills. Controlling speed while keeping my weight on the back wheel. First time I road with the banana (Earl's) forks, I was hooked. On down hills, using the front brake to control speed actually raised the front and gave me full suspension under braking. I could leave the rear brake free and not have to worry about the back sliding out or going over the bars when the telescopic forks had collapsed. Brilliant. I then tried them on my desert racing bike and WOW. Coming at some obstetrical at speed in the sand then suddenly having to brake was a big issue with telescopic forks, but the banana forks stood the front end up and planted the tire so more brake could be applied so more confidence going fast.
So now in my late 60s and blind, I ride a trike I built that is electric. It is not fast, but with my reduced vision, I still have the issue with the forks collapsing as I am braking for a curb or something. I have just obtained a set of banana forks that I am adapting to it and am watching with great anticipation to see how the Rock shocks work out with your Greeves. Thanks Mate!!!

The leading link "banana" forks are especially good going down steep hills, the front brake gives a rising torque vector, while the rear brake gives the opposite, therefore it can be modulated to some effect. My Sachs 125 had this and that is how I remember it, having never ridden a Greeves.

Hi Michael. Don't forget that if you've run out of gas for your oxy acet, you can always use your tig tourch to heat things up.😄

Hi Mike, looks like the swing arm filled up with rain water and froze. the whole length of it looks bulged and expanded like a piece of water pipe allowed to freeze....Dave

It looks like perhaps some water got in that swing arm and froze, deforming it.

Water goes down the swinging arm chain oiler hole and freezes and exspands pushing the metal out seen it before as I work on Greeves as a fall time job

Really enjoyable seeing you take on something new and unusual, although not had one for 40 odd years still have a bit of a soft spot for two strokes. I know your love of BSA and Enfield singles but did you consider something different for the other one's engine - even Sammy Miller went in an easterly direction...

Frost damage on the swinging arm. Oil filler plug left off and rain or river water into the swinging arm.???

Dave from Bullpen Cycles on U-tube has a 500 Grump, runs pretty good. Cool stuff. I’ll probably never have a Greeves but at least I know how to get those forks apart.

50 years in plumbing looks like frost damage to me just on the looks of it and the fact if it can hold oil it can hold water

You can still get Hammerite in France. I painted all the manhole covers of my complicated septic tank system with dark green Hammerite. Is the tubular part of the Greeves made from Reynolds 531 chrome moly tubing?

Have you never heard of penetrating oil, squirt, some down the fork tubes and let it set for a while before you destroy the top crown of the fork?

The forks are called leading, link, forks, not banana forks they’re much superior to telescopic forks for going downhill

In 1967 in the world of trials, Greeves were at the top of their game, much better than anything Triumph had at the time!
