Maybe opposing colors for the backgrounds - pale green for the yellow bird, etc. I think the different backgrounds will also add a springtime effect to the set, especially if you stick with pastels. These are outstanding! I love your ideas.
I would have colored the birds using a pastel gel pen or marker only on the areas that needed more color depth. For example where the white belly area I would have traced the outline of just that area with light green or whatever color you choose so that the bird color doesn't fade with the white background.
