It's great to see you bringing your Father-in-law out to your home and making videos... Keep him around... when you involve him in such projects, he will love it!!! :)
Instead of further compacting your soil by towing the spreader with the tractor you could probably pull the spreader by hand. Not every operation is best done with a tractor on wet land.
We just finished planting on the farm before all this rain came. Now the rain is keeping us from mowing hay. I really enjoy your videos even though I'm not the biggest fan of John Deere. Anyways, good bless you and stay dry.
Last summer, I used 2-parts 13-13-13 and 1-part lawn fertilizer at planting and I had a decent stand of corn; no tillage, just worked the seed into the ground.
We had a Farmall Super A, single row tractor, that we used to plow the extensive garden my grandparents planed every year. We would use sweep cultivators to control the weeds all across the row. The tractor had a fertilizer distributor that mounted on the side of the tractor motor and was driven by a chain off the rear axle so it was synced to the ground speed of the tractor. The fertilizer fed through a hose to the back of one of the sweeps, just to the side of the crop. We also used this same system along with a rear mounted planter to put a little fertilizer under the seed when we planted. A center hoe dug a tench in the middle of the row and the fertilizer dropped into it. Then a disc on either side through dirt back into a slight mound. The planter ran on top of this mound, planting the seed. We had a Cole plate type planter. It looked a lot like yours, which the press wheels in the back to close the dirt over the seed.
My great uncle, Neighbor Bob, always made a contraption to make working with practically anything better or easier! When the shore stations (that lift your boat out of the water, next to the dock) first came out, they were all manual. He made for himself, at the cottage, a 3-piece, 28-30" diameter belt sheave out of wood, with the belt path routed into it, that U-bolted onto the lift wheel, had a 1/2hp 120V motor covered by an up side down Rubbermaid container, and controlled by an x-ray hand switch. Ended up making several of them for several neighbors up there, as well.
One nice thing about my Cole 12MX Multi-Flex Planter/Fertilizer is I can side dress fertilizer as I plant. I also use Miracle Grow every seven days. My Ambrosia is tasseling and putting on ears. Should have some sweet corn sometime next month.
Tim a few thoughts regarding your spreader. While many suggest a pro broadcast spreader, your pull spreader gets the job done! To get the spreader a bit further away from your tractor, use a drawbar between the 2 lower points on the quick hitch. For your control some pipe, some pipe cement and primer, a coupler and an elbow should do all you need. And then to avoid beating the young corn plants with the gearbox, replace the tires with larger diameter tires, realizing only half of the diameter change is ground clearance. And you get to reminisce about Neighbor Bob every time the pull spreader is brought out!
Tim you need a 3pt PTO spreader you could probably find one like I did for around $25 used. That was with the PTO shaft. It will hold way more than our tractors carry but can also spread 60 feet.
I agree with Christopher on the NPK and would add the numbers simply are percentages. Its easiest to think in units of 100’s either 100 lbs or gal. A 100 lbs of 20 20 20 would contain 20 lbs N, 20 lbs P, and 20 lbs K with the remaining 40 lbs being inert material.
Totally agree with you. If you want to grow crops, you need fertilizer. My granddad used to put 300 lbs per acre of 5-10-15 under the row when planting corn. Then, at “lay by” last cultivating, he would get another 300-400 lbs per acre of 34% liquid nitrogen as side dressing. Corn doesn’t require much fertilizer though. Cotton and tobacco requires copious amounts of fertilizer, per acre (almost 1ton+), especially in sandy loam soils in the southeast. BTW, you really need a 3 point hitch spreader🤣. Keep up the great work.
Hey Tim Brad from Minnesota wondering if next year or when you fly out your next crop go lengthwise is the way you’re doing it now looks like it’s too short Because I think you can still get the same amount of harvest by going lengthwise can you bring your rolls closer together
Tim, You were giving Bobby one heck of a workout following you. Lol I planted popcorn this year in the same garden as potatoes. Do you know if nitrogen would be ok with potatoes?

Yes! Exactly! Then I could pinch Christi when she is getting lazy without me even getting off the tractor! :-) Just kidding. One of those tools would be helpful at times.
If you or someone you know could convert your little spreader to a 3 pt hitch attachment. Then you could leave the gearbox engaged all the time and just raise it when you want to stop spreading. It just may need some pivot to keep the wheels on the ground.
Thank you so much for making this video! I am growing sweet corn and it is a little bigger than yours and I keep wondering if I should fertilize it! Now I know! Thanks Tim!
Quicker to spread by hand, over here before drilling Maze we spread cow muck and then plough the ground and drill the Maze with a small amount of fertilizer.
Tim I put 19-19-19 in the ground with mine when I plant it and I don't have to go back and top dress with ammonia nitrate later in the season that's on my good low ground my high ground I still have to put 200 lbs of ammonia nitrate on it when it gets about waist high
Yessir, I till in a good dose of triple ten before planting and the garden loves it! Might be time to hit up the finance committee for a three-point pto powered spreader. In the interim, I wonder if you would draw some electrical power to run an actuator switch to the spreader and just wire an on/off switch to the dash on the tractor?
Hello, The handle on the spreader is on an off? You can use two colors of 1/4 inch rope, one for on and one for off (the rope should have enough length to allow you to tie them to the ROPS bar from the spreader and allow for tractor turns). Other Items needed: One eye bolt that will allow the rear rope to pass through easily, two fender washers and two nuts, (loctite optional). Drill a hole at the top of the handle to allow the ropes to pass through. Tie one color rope to the front hole and place a couple of knots into the handle hole. Use the other color rope for the rear hole and knots through the handle run this rope through the eye bolt. Determine a good place to mount the eye bolt on the spreader bin nearest the tractor, maybe slightly off center (you preference). Ensure there is enough rope so the handle can be extended in both directions. Sorry this is kinda long, but it should not cost more than 10.00 in parts. I’m sure you get the idea. Love the videos!

Id say drill a hole in each back corner of the sreader bin. And attach a chain or somthing loose to hang to the top corners of your quick hitch so when you comletly raise your 3pt it lifts the spreader 4-6 in onn the ground. At the begining on the row lower your 3pt enough to lower the spreader and make ground contact to spin...... at the end raise it so the wheels are off the ground..........instant on/off without a big expensive or complicated modification. ......also when traviling from storage to useage location your saving wear and tear on the wheels and axle ext that stiil would spin on the ground even when disengaged

They make a electric spreader that goes in a 2 inch reviever for $100 I've been thinking of getting one for years right now Ive just been borrowing my dads lawn tractor and pull behind spreader like yours.
We have subsidized rental arrangement with AHW LLC for the 2038r, 5075e, and Gator. The 1025r is ours. We discuss these issues in detail when we introduce a new piece of equipment.
Use shot gun repels all instead of a fence 3lb granules I have had a garden in for 3 weeks no fence around the garden and it has not been touched. Buy from Walmart or order it’s amazing
I agree with the mulching. I believe I've seen you haul away some nice soil in some other videos. Hope your using that soil, grass clippings and leaves to create good compost.
It will take some thinking and then building but you could probably build something so the spreader attaches to the quick hitch in an fashion so it is pulled (you can turn) but when you lift it it self centers in the air. And after that just leave it in the open position. These things are so light so it's probably not required to do it in steel, you can build it out of wood and some ropes (but some steel for the quick attach of course).
Clarification: it won't be connected to the current drawbar but to the quick hitch. Probably need some extension of the bar on the spreader side or it will be thrown to the sides when you turn because if the joint being further back.
@@TractorTimewithTim you mean by uneven ground (as in the video) where some front wheel goes into the ground and the threepoint swinging up by lever effect over the back when? Yes a possibility though you are quite far out with that quick hitch draw bar already.
No, I mean that the 3 pt doesn’t have down pressure so the entire 3 pt can come up rapidly and unexpectedly. Highly recommend that you use the drawbar for pull type implements.
@@TractorTimewithTim okay I see, the spreader doesn't have much tongue weight. But a few weights around this frame I'm thinking could be built will keep it down.
I put liquid nitrogen on. Since you have that nice sprayer you might look into it. Comes in 5 gallon pails and you can put it on while you spray your herbicide.
I think maybe you shoulda let your father-in-law drive and you run behind!😂😂😂 I went to a pto driven spreader it works great and no side stitch!😂😂😂 nice video and nice alarm system!
You just need a 3 point mount spreader with all that lawn and garden then you could hey wait can you run fertilizer through the seeder on Vinny vs Grass seed????? but with a three point spreader you could hire out fertilizer spreading on lawns!!!
Seems like someone could invent a fertilizer spreader that would drop the fertilizer linearly on either side of the planted row rather than spreading it all over and fertilizing more weeds than crop. That spreader looks like it was intended for seeding/fertilizing a lawn. Sure glad the flood didn't get your garden.
Fertilizer numbers are listed N-P-K. N is Nitrogen, P is Phosphorus, and K is Potassium

We have subsidized rental arrangement with AHW LLC for the 2038r, 5075e, and Gator.
The 1025r is ours. We discuss these issues in detail when we introduce a new piece of equipment.
Go to a truck stop and get a 5th wheel puller rod. It has a hook on the end
Use shot gun repels all instead of a fence 3lb granules I have had a garden in for 3 weeks no fence around the garden and it has not been touched. Buy from Walmart or order it’s amazing
This stuff? www.domyown.com/repelsall-liquid-concentrate-p-1698.html
Yeah, we use it too. It's safe and it works.
What you need is a spreader bucket for Allie
Me and you know corn loves fert. Your help in a lot that don't know.
Time to start adding organic matter to the garden. This should improve your garden soil structure after a few years.
I don’t recommend pulling drawbar type attachments with the 3 pt hitch. The 3 pt hitch can come ‘up’ rapidly, and cause some serious issues.
Things don't always work perfectly... but using what ya have at the time, looks like the job was completed.
You need a pto driven slinger
Why didn't you try to level out the field after you tilled it
I put liquid nitrogen on. Since you have that nice sprayer you might look into it. Comes in 5 gallon pails and you can put it on while you spray your herbicide.
Where do you buy, David? Everything I have found is cost prohibitive.
@@TractorTimewithTim I buy at our local feed store. I have done the math and it is actually cheaper than granular. I spray it on my hayfields. 42-0-0
They do make a spreader for the Ventrac :)
I think maybe you shoulda let your father-in-law drive and you run behind!😂😂😂 I went to a pto driven spreader it works great and no side stitch!😂😂😂 nice video and nice alarm system!
Great video
You just need a 3 point mount spreader with all that lawn and garden then you could hey wait can you run fertilizer through the seeder on Vinny vs Grass seed????? but with a three point spreader you could hire out fertilizer spreading on lawns!!!
Good video.
"COME ON MANNN"... Add a couple wraps of duct tape to hold that spreader control "handle" inside the PVC pipe and you'll be good to go...
Tim, is there comming rain the next day because with hot wether and sunn like this the fertilizer will have a lot of losses. A lot !
Hi from Germany!
With Zero Till farming in Saskatchewan your chemical bill goes way down because you aren't bringing up weed seeds
