  • Inspired by personal and world events, Lee Mingwei’s art aims to bring people together in difficult times, promoting healing through connection. This short documentary traces the artist’s journey from his formative years in Taipei to his artistic beginnings in the Bay Area to becoming the globally renowned contemporary artist he is today. Featuring interviews with the artist, his close friend and M+ Museum Director Suhanya Raffel, and exhibition curator Claudia Schmuckli, the film invites viewers into Lee Mingwei’s life and work to answer the question, “How can art mend the social fabric?”
The film, directed by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s Megan Bates, is part of our original documentary series FAMSF Presents. It supports the exhibition Lee Mingwei: Rituals of Care, on view at the de Young museum February 17 through July 7, 2024.

The Dining Project by Lee Mingwei was originally presented in InteractExchange, the artist's first solo exhibition at Lombard Freid Fine Arts, 1997.

What a stunning film. I learned about an artist I didn’t know and that, now, after seeing this film, want to know better. I’m so intrigued by his mending and letter writing projects. I look forward to someday being able to participate. ❤

This was very inspirational, and touched me very deeply. And I loved the glimpse of the Letter-writing Project. I hope I can be there some time, to see it and participate in it.

Intervening on Guernica in that way is magical, just like our tendency to erase only to be condemned to relive

I like the conceptual aspect of what is presented in this video, but I don't see fine art. I see interesting installations without high technical skills.
