    My little chihuahua , Scallywag, has just passed away at 14. Heart problems and a tumor in his throat. He was so lovely and I miss him very much. So many good memories, they have wonderful personalities. R.I.P my little boy.

      Susan Roberson, I'm so sorry for your loss. Its been a year and I'll bet you still grieve. We lost our two long haired Chi chis when they were 15 yrs.. Black jack went first then a year later we lost Jill. They both passed away at home. Jack took his last breath while on Daves lap and Jill took her last breath with me. 3 yrs and it still pains me. I have never felt so connected to a dog or I should say dogs. They were perfect. They did not yap however Dave could send little Jack on a bark a thon by saying "SQUIRREL, Where is the squirrel?" Maybe i shouldn't go back to the Chihuahua breed and check at the shelter for a sad dog that needs a loving, forever home. We'll see. I do hope you are passing through your grieving process with friends and family that care.
      I am thinking about finding another Chi chi but then I get sad again. Maybe I'm still not ready for another dog.
      Good grief, I've written a chapter and could write ever so much more about those two dogs that i never thought of having. Oh, Jack and Jill were not shakers either. We were fortunate to have them in our lives for that time.
      i believe anyone who has a Chihuahua, long or short hair, is a special breed to themselves. My condolences to all who have lost thier precious little dogs.God Bless. CLD.

      Cynthia Dowell I am so sorry!!! I lost my tiny 2.5 lb Yorkie 2 years ago and it still hurts and I cry often. There is nothing in this world like the unconditional love of a fur baby!!! He had the best personality and he made so many people happy and especially children. Being so small he was cold easily so I always dressed him up in the cutest clothes. On our daily walks we always had our regular stops to see people and a lot of children. Most small dogs aren’t fond of kids but my Punky would run up to them and would let them pet him. The kids would especially love to see him on Halloween because he had the cutest outfits. Bless you Cynthia for loving and taking such good care of our beautiful gifts from God! There are so many horror stories regarding animals and especially dogs that it is beautiful and refreshing to hear someone speak of the love that they have for their babies. I do want to get another dog and probably 2 bonded babies so that if I have to go somewhere they can keep each other company.
      I look at a lot of rescue and shelter sites and Chihuahua and Pit bulls are by far the the 2 breeds they have the most of. I think since there are so many fine, loving dogs that are stuck in these places by no fault of there own, that I will adopt a bonded pair of Chi’s this time. Now look Cynthia I am writing a book lol 😆. God bless you Cynthia and I will pray and wish for the two of us to be fortunate to have the unconditional love of fur babies once again when the time is right. Take care, Ronda. 🐾👍😊

    I've read many theories on were they originated however they have been found in ancient burials in Mexico so I'd say they are a Mexican native dog.

      When this was made in 2014, some people suspected the Chihuahua may have Chinese origins, but that has been ruled out now through genetic testing. Technically though, like most breeds native to the US and Mexico, it did originally (like a REALLY long time ago) come from Asia.

      Bless you, 🤗for your support in rescuing Chihuahuas. Ever since I was a young girl. We have never been able to keep a dog. You see my Dad was in the military and we were never state side for long. We grew up in Germany. Where we got our first Chihuahua. He was a 6 week old Black and Tan. He was our family dog. He was the only dog that we ever had, until he passed at the age of 15. I rescued a Brown and white feisty little girl Chihuahua, that was 5 years old. A friend of mine, his roommate had her and 2 long haired big cats. Btw, she hated cats. They were actually terrorizing her. By tag teaming her. You know how mean cats can be with just one. Lol 😂
      He bought a pit bull pup. He kept her(Pit) in his bedroom while at work. Worried that she would get hurt by the female pit. I took her in. Then I later decided to purchase a solid white little boy Chihuahua puppy. That way she would have company as well as her own kind. He became her brother.. I also had to work a full time job. I just wanted you to know that she lived 14 years with me. And she had a heart murmur. During her last few years. She was on medication. When it was time for her to go. She let us know. I will tell you. She went everywhere with us. On vacation. We would sneak her into our condo at the beach. Lol 😂. She got more love ❤️ in her 14 years with me and my husband. He had a rescue Chihuahua and rat terrier mix. He also had a heart murmur.
      But we gave them all, so much love. They sit on our mantel except for her brother, who we buried outside in the backyard. We agreed that if we ever decide to sell our home, we will dig him up and have him cremated. I’m so sorry that this is so long. But I admire you. Again Thank you 🙏🏼. 💜

    My 11year old chihuahua snafu was the sweetest dog,she was way taller and just much larger compared to her mom and dad. at age 10 she became diabetic, it was so hard on her i always felt terrible giving her insuline twice a day. she got sick last month and stopped eating so i couldn't give her insuline shots. Her condition worsened and i was forced to put her down on march 4 2019 she was the best dog i have ever known. She was smart,beautiful and it seemed everyone loved her. Snafu definitly took a piece of my heart with her when she passed. RIP FOOEY

    I have two Chia's and I would love to have more, they are the best 4 legged loving babies you could have in your home. Yes you do have to remember they are a dog not a toy (I sometimes forget :o) so funny and they have a HUGE personality. Their Vet's and nurses jut love my Chihuahua's - it becomes a huge petting session when they visit. Coco and Pepe just have that charismatic thing about them and draw people to say hello them. Life is pretty good when you have a Chihuahua or two.......

    I have a chihuahua/Pom mix. Rescued her a year ago.
    Sweetest, smartest dog ever.
    Live in warm CA so I groom her short all summer long.
    She is a long hair and believe me, keeping her fur short takes years off her appearance.
    She’s 10, but after a short groom she looks 5. 💜

    My monkey boy (Mugly) I think was very lucky indeed. 1- from a tiny puppy he was VERY used to people coming and going as my aunt got him when she had late stage cancer, so nurses, family, neighbours...all coming and going. 2- When she sadly passed a few months later he came to us, and oh boy was he trained stringently. He’s treated like any other dog we have had (well...mostly, he’s my mums lil granbaby lol) and we have not had any problems at all! They’re a lovely breed and even my dad who hated the idea of a “little yapper” loves him to pieces! (Possibly more than my mum lol)

    You failed to mention that along with there being two coat types, there are two very different head types, the deer head (Wilma is an extreme version of this) and the apple head which are the cuter, more bulbous headed ones such as the dogs on the examination table.

      @Pisces I use to show Chihuahuas, novice. The smooth and long coats show separately, yes that apple head is preferred. Other qualities too, confidence, size, weight, coat, teeth, health, structure, demeanor. Fun while it lasted, sometimes nerve wracking, at least for me.

      My chi is a deer head and is 13lbs. I prefer the deer head over the apple head, less health issues and not so bugged eyed. I really find it upsetting that the acceptable standard for any dog is one that causes health conditions.

    • @1mensamom
      @1mensamom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@doc196769 My vet told me that it IS a reverse sneeze and it's nothing to worry about. I usually pet my 2 girls to calm them if this happens. They don't seem to be overly stressed about it, I think it bothers me more than it bothers them. As for the bad teeth, I've been putting an additive in their water called "Fresh Breath" which is supposed to keep plaque from forming on their teeth. One of my chis is almost 7 yo and has no signs of plaque on her teeth yet. I order mine from Chewy.com and highly recommend it as it is not full of harmful chemicals. I also give them filtered water only, not tap. My vet's office told me they have had a lot of bladder stones in dogs they treat that drink our city water due to the chemicals/additives in it. I love my furbabies and am not taking any chances with their health.

    • @susansmith5472

    I have 7 (mom dad and 5 pups - unplanned) and they are better behaved than kids! Lots of love and routine and they are very content. They all come when I call and know exactly what is expected of them. Hate rain and wind though. I wouldn't swap them for anything and I have had dogs all my life. (border collies and alsatians included which were amazing). I got one chihuahua after my terrier (cairn mix) passed at 17 and then got a playmate (which I thought had been speyed hence puppies). They all got along with the new kitten I'd got after losing my old cat - also 17 yrs of age. She watches over them like a fussy mom but they all take note of me - especially if they start a squabble, they know they get time out then!.

    Sooo many shaky pups. My girl is quite fearful too (she doesn't usually shake like that unless we're at the vet though), and she'll growl and bark at strangers when she's on the ground (it's about the only time she ever barks so it's pretty quiet at my place), but that's as far as her tempermental side goes. She's such a sweet, gentle dog - most gentle I've known. Soft mouth. She was taught not to bite as a pup and learned fast (she was a quick learner in general). At the vet she never opens her mouth no matter what they do to her (but especially if they're trying to put a pill in it) and the vet scares her like nothing else and she has had some painful procedures done. She makes quick friends with gentle kids, but is shy with adults until they make a real effort to gain her trust. It is a lifelong thing with some of them. Many seem naturally fearful even after lots of socialization as a pup. But I can't imagine any other breed (possibly even any other dog) fitting into my life so well. I'm a bit timid myself, we both love our downtime, and her quirks make me laugh. Perfect match.

    1:36 full of sterotypes. She may have socialised the dog but you still need to regularly catch up on it. It’s like meeting someone new then 2 years later meeting them again, you’d forgotten how you’re supposed to interact, in addition it may be aggressive due to one thing that might have happened.

    I've had a few, used to do animal foster care, mostly Chihuahuas - they are generally a one-person dog, picking one person in the family that they love unconditionally, and staying clear of the others. Not all Chihuahuas are like this, but it is a general trait. Out of 20 dogs, we have had maybe 2 that were friendly to strangers, most were very selective. They also have very selective eating habits, and are probably the only breed that will starve itself with food sitting in front of it if it doesn't like it. Don't expect them to eat vegetables, they will clear a plate of dog food with carrots and peas, leaving the peas and carrots scattered on the floor. Be warned, just accept them for what they are.

    I guess I'm lucky that I have a very sweet, gentle chi. I have two, the other one is also sweet, but he was abused, and I have to be more careful with him with children and strangers. they both have the bad teeth, they both have the patella issues, the latter one has seizures. Other than that, they are awesome little dogs!

    • @barbaracooke9901
      @barbaracooke9901 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashley Gage Be careful when they are pups but do remember they are dogs not babies, they don’t need carrying about and they don’t need dressing up in stupid clothing. When in a warm home they’ll be fine, however in cold weather, jumpers or waterproof coat is necessary when out and about. Please be patient with toilet training, they are not easy as they hate going out in cold or heavy rain. Start off with puppy pads inside and don’t stress about them going out. Accidents will happen but hey ho, their company is wonderful. BIG NO NO IS; DON’T LEAVE THEM HOURS ON THEIR OWN. No dog should have to endure such cruelty. Good luck, just love and respect them.

      Pisces Hi Pisces, I agree with you 💯%!!! My vet told me and I have read that any dog under 4 lbs cannot hold it’s body heat. And also any small dog is much more susceptible to the cold. I dress my 2.5 lb Yorkie every single day even in the summer and have 3 low temp heating pads strategically placed throughout the house. The only time he doesn’t have something warm on is when we play or when out on a walk. Otherwise if he isn’t moving (getting his blood circulating) he is absolutely cold. I know people have mocked for having clothes on him but he likes to be warm and the side effect is he is absolutely adorable dressed or not!!! 🐾👍😊

    Half an hour a day exercise??? No way. We start at an hour minimum in winter. In summer even 4-5 hours. They are dogs. Lo and behold, the behavior issues disappear. These guys are terriers with the stamina and intelligence of terriers. Give them what they deserve. A dog's life.

      @carolynmoore8610 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not an expert so I will stand corrected, but that is what I read about them. I also read that an original, pure chi is about 15 to 20 lbs but the size has been bred out of them.
      I see so much pomeranian in my long-haired guy. He has two layers of fur. The undercoat is bluish tan and overcoat is chocolate and tan. He has very thick, long, light-colored fur on his front and back legs, very much the same texture and appearance of a pomeranian's.
      On another note, for those that don't like them, I have to say I have yet to meet a dog with as good a temperment as my guy. He seldom barks and is quite humble with people. He doesn't need to talk, he wears his feelings and needs in his eyes and on his little face, and the extra bonus is, I don't have to take a shovel with me when he goes out of his 'walk'.

    I don't 'baby' my chihuahuas so they're quite well-behaved. One of them just barks a lot, usually at cats and bigger dogs, and overestimates its bone strength by jumping, zooming, standing on hind legs a lot. My parents let that one get away with yapping at people--basically almost spoiled, so it's the least calm one.

    • @emily-hg3sx
      @emily-hg3sx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony J. Aviles Chihuahuas shake and shiver is simply because they are cold. With an average weight of just 2-4 pounds, Chihuahuas are one of the smallest dog breeds and the world; therefore, they are more susceptible to the effects of cold weather, or they can be excited and they shake then too.

    I'm not sure I'm buying the notion that Chihuahuas came from China. There are some that say Chihuahuas originated, not from Mexico, but from China, but I don't agree. The only thing that ties them back to China is that researchers have very recently traced some American breeds using DNA analysis to an ancient Asian dog breed. However, DNA research is very new and I doubt if all dog breeds have been screened for DNA analysis.
    There are depictions of Chihuahuas on Toltec and Aztec pottery. Now .. I do believe that the Chinese visited pre-Columbus America and left its influence. The Chinese civilization goes at least as far back as the ancient civilizations of Mexico, Central America, and South America. The jade artwork in Mexico and South America .. as well as the Asian features of many of the ethnic groups of Mexico and America also lend credence to the very real possibility that the Chinese were here before the Europeans.
    Crossing the Atlantic or the Pacific, particularly by accident because of storms, that often took explorers to completely uncharted areas, was not that uncommon. I believe the Polynesians, the Africans, the Chinese, and of course the Vikings, visited North or South America and left their mark.
    Science suffers from the same problem as religion, although not as acute, in that it tends to stagnate due to dogmatism. Too many careers at stake if you change a hallowed belief. So if Chihuahuas came from China .. it was a VERY long time ago.

      My female always use her pee pad or goes outside, super smart. Trained male early on to go outside. On rare occasions he uses pee pad inside, he tries to cover pee by folding pee pad over pee, so strange! But, mostly he goes outside even when it's cold, snowy, for just a few minutes. If the snow is deep we go to a covered outdoor kennel, snow doesn't accumulate there. I go with him always, flashlight used when dark. Also, hawks, owls, coyotes, or foxes in area so have to be careful. I love my Chihuahuas.

    • @barbaracooke9901
      @barbaracooke9901 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ron Pitts Not if you you take the time and trouble to train them. They are not easy to train as when they are young they don’t like the rain or cold (understandable if you have any empathy at all). As they grow, with PATIENCE and TIME and regular fun walks, they do adjust and learn to cope with inclement weather. It took two years to get mine to go out for the toilet, it got less and less until she now lets me know when she wants to go out. All pups need positive training, short fun periods of your time will get results. There are some people who actually believe that puppies come with knowledge of toilet training and good behaviour. Sad but true. If you can’t cope with that; DON’T GET A DOG.

  • @lucygray6162

    A half hour of exercise? Are you nuts? My chihuahua would be running around the ceiling if she only had 30 minutes outside time. She can run like a mad maniac for four hours, and has worn out the resident "working dog." Best of all, she sleeps deep when it's time for bed. More exercise also equals less fat, which is a problem for these dogs as they age. They beg for food and treats, we fall for it every time (after all, they ARE adorable), and we wind up with a pudgy dog. Loyal these loyal little guys.
